The University of Essex is in the third year of a four-year project to introduce staff and student dashboards across all its departments and is ready to share some insights and experiences. Following a year-long pilot, the Learner Engagement Activity Portal (LEAP) is now being used by staff and students across multiple campuses. Now that student engagement information is at their fingertips, academic staff are being asked to understand and use this data to inform decisions about how to best support students and different models for using student engagement data in academic departments are emerging.
This session will give an overview of the Essex project, discuss how some of the many challenges have been overcome and highlight the need for developing the digital skills of academic staff to take advantage of the richer set of student data available via a learner analytics solution.

Gray Associates shared how Regis University integrated with Gray's flexible data, systems, and processes. Through this integration, Regis University's Academic Council (RUAC), composed of college representatives, was able to provide recommendations to their Provost on the best programs to Grow, Sustain, or Intervene. Among other critical findings, a key takeaway for Regis was that Faculty engagement was mission critical.
Before diving into the outcomes of Regis University's Program Sustainability Assessment, Gray will share the most recent student and employer trends using the best data in higher education. All of the trends we reveal are derived from Gray's Program Evaluation System (PES). PES was used by RUAC to identify key data points to inform future resource allocation strategies for sustainability and future growth.

Three First Nations in British Columbia - Squiala First Nation, Seabird Island First Nation, and Westbank First Nation - shared their experiences with Smith's Landing First Nation to help guide their development. The Nations explained how becoming self-governing and implementing economic development plans allowed them to develop community centers and fund services for their members, such as daycares, schools, and youth programs. They emphasized that achieving self-sufficiency takes time but results in stronger communities and prosperity. Smith's Landing was encouraged that with organization and persistence, they too could create needed infrastructure and services for their members.

Smith's Landing First Nation received funding from Alberta TrailNet to build bridges along the DesNethe Trail connecting Fort Smith to the Trans Canada Trail system. This will improve safety for travelers and connect the community to 24,000 km of trails. The funding will also create new jobs for the community and tourism is expected to increase. Thanks to engagement with community members, priorities were identified for economic development - a Band Development Co-op, Multi-Purpose Community Wellness Centre, and expanding tourism. A governance tour was planned to research how other First Nations have successfully implemented similar projects.

After meeting with membership, ALIF conducted deeper research on the feasibility of the three most highly ranked opportunities: i) Spiritually and Culturally Focused Tourism, ii) a Multipurpose Wellness Centre and iii) a Band Develop Co-operative.
SLFN Environmental Scan
ALIF Partners led a five-month consultation with SLFN membership; this included talking circles, a listening campaign, and numerous meetings with Elders, youth and other members as well as Ft Smith officials, territorial, provincial and federal officials. Through these meetings and extensive research ALIF identified 80+ opportunities the band could move on and developed an easy to use tool that band could use to score opportunities.

A Guide to AI for Smarter Nonprofits - Dr. Cori Faklaris, UNC Charlotte
Working with data is a challenge for many organizations. Nonprofits in particular may need to collect and analyze sensitive, incomplete, and/or biased historical data about people. In this talk, Dr. Cori Faklaris of UNC Charlotte provides an overview of current AI capabilities and weaknesses to consider when integrating current AI technologies into the data workflow. The talk is organized around three takeaways: (1) For better or sometimes worse, AI provides you with “infinite interns.” (2) Give people permission & guardrails to learn what works with these “interns” and what doesn’t. (3) Create a roadmap for adding in more AI to assist nonprofit work, along with strategies for bias mitigation.
