International Standards: The Challenges for an Interoperable Smart Grid
Building an electric energy Smart Grid involves proper interfacing between existing devices, applications and systems – all likely sourced from many different vendors. The resulting interoperability allows valuable advantages, such as the ability to use distribution system demand response (DSDR) to improve the efficiency of delivered power. Interoperability enables automated switching sequences, for system ‘self-healing’ and improved reliability, along with effective integration of distributed renewable and non-renewable resources that can enable peak shaving. Interoperability also is vital for assimilating emerging automation technologies that will enable the utility to realize these benefits in the future – and protect public and private sector technology investments.
The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) defines international standards, recognized globally, that characterize interoperability and security of electrical, electronic and related technologies. These standards are created to assure interoperability within all the major power system objects in an electrical utility enterprise and allow mission critical distribution functions to take advantage of real-time data in a secure manner. The IEC standards also enable reliable exchange of data among utilities and across power pools.
The U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is incorporating IEC standards, and developing new or revised standards, to be applied in its development of a Smart Grid as a national energy goal. This standards framework aims to eliminate the implementation of technologies that might become obsolete prematurely or be implemented without necessary security measures – and help utilities make the infrastructure decisions that reduce cost and energy loss, improve network reliability and embrace technology innovation.

Most utilities struggle to organize information about their distribution network assets. Operations, engineering, accounting, and other business functions all use different tools and systems, forcing grid operators to synchronize separate databases. This paper presents an improved approach to managing grid assets by establishing a ‘single source of the truth,’ eliminating special-purpose databases, utilizing spatial databases, and incorporating a workflow management tool to support database updates.

Many Westerners engage in a high degree of ethnocentrism which is the belief that one's own culture is superior to all others and that their culture's way of thinking about the world or doing things is the only correct way. Exceptionalism is evident in the belief that people from other cultures are "under-developed", "primitive", or "savages". Western educational systems generally teach from an "Eurocentric" perspective which means students are mostly exposed to the ideas of old,rich,white,straight,often long-dead men. The social theories that underpin the discipline of global health are no exception. The ideas from amazing scholars from the 84% of the world that is non-Western are not regularly presented to students.
We will be critically analyzing how Western ethnocentrism and exceptionalism regularly creates problems in global health work. Some of the problematic Western ethnocentric and exceptionalist ideas we will consider are: 1) "Doing something is always better than doing nothing", 2) "I want to be a voice for the voiceless", 3) "Impoverished people in developing countries always want our help", 4) "Westerners know best how to help impoverished people in developing countries" and 5) " People in impoverished countries, who are closest to the problems, are not well-educated and are therefore not capable of developing their own solutions".

Some of the problematic Western ethnocentric and exceptionalist ideas we will consider are: 1) "Doing something is always better than doing nothing", 2) "I want to be a voice for the voiceless", 3) "Impoverished people in developing countries always want our help", 4) "Westerners know best how to help impoverished people in developing countries" and 5) " People in impoverished countries, who are closest to the problems, are not well-educated and are therefore not capable of developing their own solutions".

Geert Hofstede developed cultural dimensions theory to analyze differences in national cultures. His theory identifies six dimensions along which cultural values can vary, including power distance, individualism vs collectivism, masculinity vs femininity, uncertainty avoidance, long-term vs short-term orientation, and indulgence vs restraint. Understanding differences across these cultural dimensions is important for effective cross-cultural communication and international business relations.

Lead Poisoning
This document discusses childhood lead poisoning in Rhode Island. It notes that the rate of childhood lead poisoning dropped from 33% in 1998 to 3% in 2011 and is projected to be 2.2% in 2012. Lead poisoning is defined as having 10 ug/DL or more of lead in the blood. Common causes of lead poisoning are inhaling or ingesting lead dust, contaminated tap water from pipes, and soil. Lead poisoning can cause nervous system and developmental problems as well as learning disabilities and permanent mental retardation, with an increase of 4-7 IQ points lost for every 1 ug/dL increase in blood lead levels.

Book Sharing
