From Hollywood to Holy Orders
St. Luke's, Sunday 7th
May
"Elvis is a young man with
an enormous capacity of
love... but I don't think he
has found his happiness. I
think he is terribly lonely".
"Before I was twenty,
I learned that being in
movies didn't bring
me the ultimate joy I
expected."
“People think that it is a life that
is shut off, or you’re gone from
the world, but it’s exactly
opposite. You are more
embedded into the world. It’s a
way of love that includes everyone
that you’ve ever loved.’’
“I never considered my
decision as “walking away
from Hollywood,” I felt it was
more — walking into
something more significant
and by that, I took Hollywood
with me. I really loved my work
and the people I worked with.
“Stand at the crossroads and
look; ask for the ancient paths,
ask where the good way is, and
walk in it, and you will find
rest for your souls.”
Jeremiah 6:16
Matthew 6:22-23 “The eye is
the lamp of the body. If your
eyes are healthy, your whole
body will be full of light. But
if your eyes are unhealthy,
your whole body will be full
of darkness.”
Psalm 119:164
Seven times a day
I praise you for
your righteous.
Acts 3v1
One day Peter and John
were going up to the
temple at the time of
prayer—at three in the
afternoon.
Acts 10:9
About noon the following
day as they were on their
journey and approaching
the city, Peter went up on
the roof to pray.
Spiritual disciplines form
character, awaken us to life,
and help us to experience God,
and each other, in new and
fresh ways.
Brian McLaren
Make time for
prayer
throughout the
day – make
regular
appointments to
pray!
Make generosity
normal and
habitual so it is
done
automatically.
Practice living
simply and with as
few possessions as
you can.
Make regular time
for rest every single
week whether you
feel you need it or
not.
Most of the truly
important skills we
learn in life come
through tradition,
practice or
community.
“People think that it is a life that
is shut off…, but it’s exactly
opposite.
You are more embedded into the
world. It’s a way of love.’’
"I have struggled with this call
to vocation all my life," she
says. "I can understand why
people have doubts, because
who understands God? I don't.
When you are dealing with
something at this level, you
are dealing with mystery."
“Stand at the crossroads and
look; ask for the ancient paths,
ask where the good way is, and
walk in it, and you will find
rest for your souls. But you
said, ‘We will not walk in it.”
Jeremiah 6:16
“When the Church, the
community of faith, realises it has
lost its way, it begins moving
forward by looking back.

A believer, first thing in the
morning splashes his or her
face with cold water three
times and says, Let me
awaken to you, Father, Son
and Holy Spirit.
