Spirituality — there's an app for that! (but not a lot of research)Elizabeth Buie
The iTunes App Store contains over six thousand apps related to spirituality and religion. The ACM digital library, however, contains only 98 works that address this topic from the perspective of human-computer interaction (HCI). Despite high-profile calls for research in the area, the HCI community has produced only 19 research works focused on the topic, almost half of which are the work of one person and her colleagues. In this paper we provide an overview of the relevant HCI research in this area, a partial inventory of spiritually oriented apps in the iTunes US App Store, and a comparison of research and real-world developments. We discuss the gaps in the HCI literature on techno-spiritual practices and speculate about some of the difficulties and challenges that face the HCI community in conducting research in this area.
Objectives
1. To clarify the differences and similarities between Religion, Spirituality, and Faith
2. To focus on the interactive process among physical, mental, and relational health
3. To offer some thoughts about clinical care that is grounded in an understanding of the relationship between Spirituality/Religion/Faith and Health

Henrietta Ayinor : Topic 1 DQ 1
Spirituality in my worldview has a great connection with faith, and a search for meaning and purpose in life, connection with others and surpassing Oneself. This results in s sense of inner peace and wellbeing. A strong spiritual connection may improve can improve an individual's sense of satisfaction with life or enable accommodation to disability (Delgado 2005)
Phenwan et al. (2019) Spirituality is the essence of a human being The meaning of life, feeling of connectedness to the transcendental phenomena such as the universe or God. This connectedness may or may not be part of any religions. It is also part of comprehensive palliative care, defined by the World Health Organization. An individual's spiritual well-being is a feeling of one's contentment that stems from their inner self and is related to their quality of life
SSorajjakool (2017) Religious beliefs and customs can significantly shape a nurse- patients relationship this can also influence the expectations of the nurse and patient as well as their wishes and personal boundaries regarding daily routines such as dressing, diet, prayer and touch. Undoubtedly, the sensitivity with which clinicians communicate with patients and make decisions regarding appropriate medical intervention can be greatly increased by an understanding of religious as well as other forms of cultural diversity. As a nurse caring for a patient will be deliberate in making effort to understand a patient's religious preferences this way, I will not impose my religious believes on the patient while helping them to access and receive preternatural care as a provide my nursing care this is beacuse different patienst have their spiritual prereferences and health and illness means dieferent things to dieferent people spiritually.

Topic 1 DQ 1
Individuals hold different worldviews about spirituality. The spiritual worldview of an individual depends on various factors, such as family beliefs, origin, and culture. In the world, multiple religions exist to influence an individual's connection with a supreme being (SSorajjakool, Carr, Nam, Sorajjakool & Bursey, 2017). Fo ...

The technological advances of the past century tended tochange the focus of medicine from a caring, service-oriented model to a technological, cure-oriented model.
Technology has led to phenomenal advances in medicine and
has given us the ability to prolong life. However, in the past few
decades physicians have attempted to balance their care by re-
claiming medicine’s more spiritual roots, recognizing that until
modern times spirituality was often linked with health care.
Spiritual or compassionate care involves serving the whole per-
son—the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual. Such service
is inherently a spiritual activity. Rachel Naomi Remen, MD, who
has developed Commonweal retreats for people with cancer, de-
scribed it well:
Helping, fixing, and serving represent three different ways of see-
ing life. When you help, you see life as weak. When you fix, you
see life as broken. When you serve, you see life as whole. Fixing
and helping may be the work of the ego, and service the work of
the soul (1).
Serving patients may involve spending time with them, hold-
ing their hands, and talking about what is important to them.
Patients value these experiences with their physicians. In this
article, I discuss elements of compassionate care, review some
research on the role of spirituality in health care, highlight ad-
vantages of understanding patients’ spirituality, explain ways to
practice spiritual care, and summarize some national efforts to
incorporate spirituality into medicine.
COMPASSIONATE CARE: HELPING PATIENTS FIND MEANING IN
THEIR SUFFERING AND ADDRESSING THEIR SPIRITUALITY
The word compassion means “to suffer with.” Compassionate
care calls physicians to walk with people in the midst of their
pain, to be partners with patients rather than experts dictating
information to them.
Victor Frankl, a psychiatrist who wrote of his experiences in
a Nazi concentration camp, wrote: “Man is not destroyed by suf-
fering; he is destroyed by suffering without meaning” (2). One
of the challenges physicians face is to help people find meaning
and acceptance in the midst of suffering and chronic illness.
Medical ethicists have reminded us that religion and spiritual-
ity form the basis of meaning and purpose for many people (3).
At the same time, while patients struggle with the physical as-
pects of their disease, they have other pain as well: pain related
to mental and spiritual suffering, to an inability to engage the
deepest questions of life. Patients may be asking questions such

The aspect that I found most interesting in the reading is the polarity between the older and the newer nursing theories. The older nursing theories are associated with taxonomies and quantitative measures, whereas the newer more holistic nursing theories are more qualitative measures and softer phenomena (Shelly, J., 2006). The revolution in the approach of how we think about nursing and nursing interventions in association to ethical decision making relates to a belief that nursing as a profession is both a science and an art-based profession, and the the new theories expand upon the concept. The other aspect that is interesting to me is using world views to challenge contemporary ethos by using philosophical clarity, religious sensitivity, and proportionate level of care for the sick and others who may need other forms of physiological and psychological interventions and/or wellbeing.
As medicine is traditionally considered a healing profession, and modern medicine claims legitimacy to heal through its scientific approach to medicine (Starr, P., 1982), the marriage of science and medicine has generally empowered nurses and physicians to intervene actively in the course of disease, to effect cures, to prevent illness, and to eradicate disease Hauerwas, S. (1990). In the wake of such success, nurses and physicians trained as biomedical scientists, have focused on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. In the process, cure, not care, became the primary purpose of medicine; as nurses and physician’s role have transformed to the “curer of disease” rather than “healer of the sick (Starr, P. (1982). Thus, healing in a holistic sense has faded from medical attention and is rarely discussed in the medical literature.

The polarity between the older and newer nursing theories is the aspect which I have found to be the most interesting during my reading. From my reading, I have found that the older theories are a quantitative while, the newer ones are of qualitative measures. The revolution in the approach of how we consider nursing and nursing intercessions in relationship to basic moral leadership identifies with a conviction that nursing as a calling is both a science and a craftsmanship based calling, and the new speculations develop the idea (Puchalski, Blatt, Kogan, & Butler, 2014).The other perspective that is intriguing to me is utilizing world perspectives to challenge contemporary ethos by utilizing philosophical clearness, religious affectability, and proportionate level of watch over the wiped out and other people who may require different types of physiological and mental intercessions and additionally prosperity.
As medication is customarily viewed as a recuperating calling, and present-day solution claims authenticity to mend through its logical way to deal with prescription, the marriage of science and drug has by and large, engaged attendants and doctors to intercede effectively over the span of ...

1. This lecture was given in conjunction with
Dr. Edwin Noyes, M.D. Please take the time to visit
his website spiritualisticpractices.com
2. Holistic Healing or Spiritualism?
Exposing the Inroads of Mystical Medicine
Within the Adventist Health System
3. According to Wikipedia, “Integrative
medicine or integrative health is a neologism
coined by practitioners to describe the
combination of practices and methods of
alternative medicine with conventional
medicine.”
Today, more than ever, universities and
hospitals have integrative-medicine
departments.
4. Welcome to the new age of Integrative
Medicine or IM. Integrative Medicine is making
efforts to explore new ways of treating the
mind, body and spirit -- all at the same time.
5. For example - At age 68, Karen has had her share of health
woes: breast cancer, high cholesterol, clogged arteries,
osteoporosis, and scoliosis. Once a year she journeys from her
home in Georgia to Duke University; Medical Center in North
Carolina where an internist, endocrinologist, and other
specialists monitor her with blood tests, X-rays, bone scans, and
other tests. But Karen knows that she’s more than the sum of
her illnesses. When her checkup ends, she heads for the Duke
Center for Integrative Medicine [IM], where she has learned
about nutrition, fitness, yoga, tai chi, meditation, and other
practices she says have helped her to live better.
6. “I became an avid tai chi person,” she says. “I’m a
type A personality. I knew I had to do something
about my lifestyle. I had to bring myself down to a
type B.”
Many Americans have never heard of IM, but this
holistic movement has left its imprint on many of
the nation’s hospitals, universities, and medical
schools. And both doctors and patients alike are
bonding with the philosophy of IM and its whole-
person approach. The goal being to treat the mind,
body and spirit, all at the same time.
7. Today, fewer people have concern whether there
may be any reason one should question the value or
spiritual safety in accepting or using a particular
healing method.
8. The use of alternative and complementary medicine
(a.k.a. IM) is rapidly increasing and being accepted as if it
were part and parcel of conventional or general
medicine. Within western medicine, there is a great
movement to mesh conventional medicine with
integrative medicine. Therapies that were once only
found in naturopathy and chiropractic practices can now
be found in mainstream medicine. They can now be
found to some degree in many hospitals, even in
prominent medical schools that have adopted and are
experimenting with various healing disciplines.
9. Across the nation, medical clinics are now
integrating the conventional with the non-
conventional (or IM) style of medical treatment.
Already, many health insurance companies now
include alternative health coverage in their
policies. E.g. - yoga, meditation, crystal and gem
healing, Reiki, craniosacral therapy, etc.
We will briefly look at what is currently taking
place within Adventist hospitals and healthcare, in
the area of IM.
14. Dr. Leland (Lee) and his son and daughter.
Together the Kaiser’s have founded “Two World’s Wisdom”,
“Kaiser Institute” and “Kaiser Consulting”.
15.
16. Dr. Kaiser is a pioneer in many emerging areas of health care, and an acknowledged
authority on the changing American healthcare system. Dr. Kaiser is founder and
president of Kaiser Consulting, a health care consulting firm in Brighton, CO. He also is
co-founder of Kaiser Institute, a postgraduate educational program providing advanced
training in integrative medicine, intuition, and philanthropy. Dr. Kaiser is a dynamic
motivational speaker known for his ability to change the way organizations think. He is
an associate professor in the graduate program in health administration at the
University of Colorado in Denver. He has previous professional experience as a
hospital administrator, trustee, R&D director, graduate program director, and
professional psychologist. He holds a master’s degree in Clinical Psychology and
Medical Care Administration and a doctoral degree in Social Psychology and Higher
Education. Dr. Kaiser is involved in the design of new communities and state-of-the-art
hospital architecture. He differentiates spirituality from religion, and teaches (what he
considers) core spiritual values useful for managing healthcare organizations, discusses
how spiritual values can be translated into organizational norms, and suggests the role
of spirituality in solving pressing organizational problems.
17. Leanne chairs the grants committee of theVHA foundation which
is funding innovation across healthcare--from organizations as
large as the Mayo Clinic and Johns Hopkins, to an array of small
and rural organizations. She has reviewed the innovation
strategies in hundreds of hospitals, and funded novel prototypes.
Leanne continues her growth through exposure to the scientific
fields, deep exploration across spiritual traditions, etc. Health
systems seek her out to think in new ways and create paths to a
preferable rather than a probable future.
