Some Interesting Wimbledon Facts
• Oldest & most prestigious tennis tournament in the World & a symbol of
English summer
• Wimbledon always starts on the 6th Monday before the 1st Monday of August
• Grass on the Wimbledon turf is cut to a height of exactly 8 millimeters
• The last time anyone used a wooden racket at Wimbledon was in 1987
• Yellow tennis balls were introduced in 1986 as umpires had difficulty seeing
white ones
• Up to 40,000 tennis balls are used during the tournament, each one hand-
tested for weight, bounce & compression & stored at exactly 68 ° F
• During World War II, 5 bombs hit Centre Court, destroying 1,200 seats which
took 9 years to be fully restored
• In 2007, prize money for male & female tennis players was equalized after
campaigns from Venus Williams & others.

Wimbledon in a beautiful tennis shaped ball
• Created by Russian paper artist Yulia Brodskaya
• Poster brings to life many of Wimbledon's most famous icons, from the
grass to strawberries, trophies & umbrellas, flowers & fruit
• The original artwork & poster itself are both on display in the
Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum's current exhibition
• It has been a commemorative part of Wimbledon history ever since 1894
• The official poster became particularly famous when it was featured
throughout the London Tube network
Strawberries & cream
• To ensure utmost freshness, strawberries, usually Grade I Kent
strawberries of highest quality from LEAF-certified farms are picked
the day before & arrive at Wimbledon at 5.30am
• Each year at Wimbledon 28,000kg of strawberries are eaten along with
7,000 litres of cream
• Tennis may be the focus of Wimbledon, but as the world's most famous
tennis tournament continues, berry farmers are reaping the rewards
• Since 1877, strawberries & cream have been to tennis what hot dogs
have been at countless other sporting events
• In fact, tennis aside, strawberries have become one of the touchstones
of the tournament
Flora at Wimbledon
• Purple, green & white is the cherished color scheme for the flora
displays at Wimbledon
• For years the traditional purple & green hydrangea display have
been a popular sight
• Flowering plants include, Ivy, lavender, salvia, lily of the Nile,
bellflower, silverbush ,petunias & surfinias
• Other flora also includes olive trees & ornamental grasses
• Over 50,000 plants are supplied each year for Wimbledon
Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum
• The Museum is the largest tennis museum in the world
• Inaugurated at The Champions centenary event in 1977
• Located inside the grounds of All England Lawn Tennis Club
• Was declared opened to public on 12th April 2006 by the Duke of
Kent
• Museum has exhibits & artifacts dating back to 1555 & touch screen
computer consoles for visitors to interact with
• It also has a viewing platform called CentreCourt360 allowing
guests to sample the atmosphere of Centre Court
Royal Box
• The Royal Box has been used for entertainment of friends & guests of
Wimbledon since 1922
• It has 74 seats, they are dark green Lloyd Loom wicker chairs
• British & overseas Royal Families, as well as heads of government,
people from the world of tennis, commercial partners, British armed
forces, prominent media organizations & supporters of British tennis
are invited
• Invitations come from the Chairman of All England Club, taking into
account suggestions from members of The Championships’
Organizing Committee, The Lawn Tennis Association & other relevant
sources
• Guests are invited to the Clubhouse for
lunch, tea & drinks at the end of the day
