Exceptional work of the highest quality, which demonstrates deep understanding of concepts, with sustained critical analysis. Persuasive development of accurate and relevant arguments or responses. High 1st Upper Mid 1st Lower Mid 1st Low 1st 88 82 78 74 Very high quality work demonstrating excellent knowledge and understanding. Evidence of wide range of relevant and critical reading and influence, which may extend existing debates or interpretations. Outstanding ability to summarise and demonstrate understanding. Lower Second High 2.2 Mid 2.2 Low 2.2 58 55 52 Competent work which demonstrates some evidence of some relevant research but from a limited or basic range of sources. Fails to go beyond the basic recommended reading list. Some ability to summarise information. Demonstrates reasonable understanding with no major misunderstandings of key concepts. Adherence to the requirements of the assignment brief, through some areas may be less well developed. Demonstration of subject specialist knowledge is a little under developed. Competent work which demonstrates ability to describe relevant major concepts accurately, but which may not be sufficiently thorough, sustained or relevant. Analysis may not be always critical in nature and synthesis of concepts is limited. Adequate development of arguments. Some attempt to relate theory to practice, policy and/or research with examples. Analysis and application relate to the requirements of the assignment brief but are not as developed as they could be.

Demonstrates some awareness of major concepts but with little critical analysis. Evaluation and ability to synthesise information is very limited. Descriptive approach used overall Analysis and arguments may be unconvincing and some perhaps flawed. Relation of theory to practice, policy and/or research is implied, rather than explicit with no clear examples. Overall analysis and application relate to the requirements of the assignment brief, but this is achieved in a minimal way. Fail High Fail 38 Work does not meet standards required for the appropriate stage of a Level 4 course. Evidence of study and demonstrates some knowledge and some basic understanding of relevant concepts and techniques, but subject to significant omissions and errors. Demonstrates little understanding of major concepts. Largely incoherent, under-developed and disjointed with no synthesis of ideas. Fail 32 Work is significantly below the standard required for the appropriate stage of a Level 4 course. Some evidence of study and some knowledge and evidence of understanding but No attempt to evaluate or analyse or to relate theory to practice, policy and/or research. Little ability to summarise information.

Adherence to the requirements of the assignment brief is not in evidence or significant aspects are missing. Subject specialist knowledge is not evidenced. Assignment brief not met Zero Zero 0 Work of no merit OR Absent, work not submitted, penalty in some misconduct cases.
