A helper for data scientists
The EDP (Environmental Data Platform), manage by Center for Sensing Solutions of Eurac Research, is a compound of several open-source software and components for data and metadata management. In particular, it provides tools to (i) discover the types of data available, to (ii) process big datasets and to (iii) visualize them. The EDP encompasses openEO, JupyterHub, Maps (based on Geonode) and Geonetwork software, among others.
The EDP portal is a web application which helps the viewer accessing and exploring the environmental data platform, acting as unique access point to the EDP platform.
In more detail, the EDP portal has three main features: an intuitive data discovery interface, a dedicated data processing environment (for python and R scripting) and a comprehensive documentation repository.

Abstract:
Recommender systems have been increasingly popular in assisting users with their choices, thus enhancing their engagement and overall satisfaction with online services. Since the last decade, recommender systems became a topic of increasing interest among machine learning, human-computer interaction, and information retrieval researchers.
News recommender systems are aimed to personalize users experiences and help them discover relevant articles from a large and dynamic search space. Therefore, it is a challenging scenario for recommendations. Large publishers release hundreds of news daily, implying that they must deal with fast-growing numbers of items that get quickly outdated and irrelevant to most readers. News readers exhibit more unstable consumption behavior than users in other domains such as entertainment. External events, like breaking news, affect readers interests. In addition, the news domain experiences extreme levels of sparsity, as most users are anonymous, with no past behavior tracked.
Since 2016, Deep Learning methods and techniques have been explored in Recommender Systems research. In general, they can be divided into methods for: Deep Collaborative Filtering, Learning Item Embeddings, Session-based Recommendations using Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN), and Feature Extraction from Items' Unstructured Data such as text, images, audio, and video.
The main contribution of this research was named CHAMELEON a meta-architecture designed to tackle the specific challenges of news recommendation. It consists of a modular reference architecture which can be instantiated using different neural building blocks.
As information about users' past interactions is scarce in the news domain, information such as the user context (e.g., time, location, device, the sequence of clicks within the session), static and dynamic article features like the article textual content and its popularity and recency, are explicitly modeled in a hybrid session-based recommendation approach using RNNs.
The recommendation task addressed in this work is the next-item prediction for user sessions, i.e., "what is the next most likely article a user might read in a session?". A temporal offline evaluation is used for a realistic offline evaluation of such task, considering factors that affect global readership interests like popularity, recency, and seasonality.
Experiments performed with two large datasets have shown the effectiveness of the CHAMELEON for news recommendation on many quality factors such as accuracy, item coverage, novelty, and reduced item cold-start problem, when compared to other traditional and state-of-the-art session-based algorithms.

The recommendation task addressed in this work is the next-item prediction for user sessions, i.e., "what is the next most likely article a user might read in a session?". A temporal offline evaluation is used for a realistic offline evaluation of such task, considering factors that affect global readership interests like popularity, recency, and seasonality.
Experiments performed with two large datasets have shown the effectiveness of the CHAMELEON for news recommendation on many quality factors such as accuracy, item coverage, novelty, and reduced item cold-start problem, when compared to other traditional and state-of-the-art session-based algorithms.

But to turn innovation into value requires integrating deep learning into practical technology products. Such products, including Spotify's, are often developed following the principles of agile. This talk focuses on approaching deep learning in an agile way and on integrating deep learning into the agile cadence of a modern software development organization.
Machine Learning has become a must to improve insight, quality and time to market. But it's also been called the 'high interest credit card of technical debt' with challenges in managing both how it's applied and how its results are consumed.
The document discusses challenges and opportunities for combining multiple human language technology (HLT) systems to reduce errors. It provides an example of combining name matching systems, where the existing system is supplemented by a new system. The key points are:
1) Combining systems from different technologies can reduce errors by benefiting from each system's strengths.
2) The new system should address the same task as the existing system but use a different approach to find matches the existing system misses.
3) Systems should be combined when the existing system's error types are known and the new system can be easily integrated without destabilizing the overall system.
We all know normalization is crucial to delivering high quality search results. We don’t want uninteresting variations between the query and the document to lead to missed hits (e.g., “celebrity” v. “celebrities”). Normalization of dictionary words is well understood, but what if your application focuses on names? Whether you’re tackling patent examination, sports records, e-commerce, watchlist screening or many other topics, names are often the key. Can your users find “Abdul Jabbar, Karim” if they search for “Kareem AbdalJabar” or “كريم عبد الجبار”? Solr application architects have attempted to address this through custom integration of nickname lists, edit distance, case normalization, phonetic encoding and n-grams (see example #1 or example #2), but doing so requires significant effort and may not address all desired variations. A simpler approach is to use a Solr field type for names that handles these linguistic nuances behind-the-scenes. We’ll talk about how we built this sort of field type via a Solr plug-in for the Rosette Name Indexer. We’ll also discuss examples of use cases this has enabled, how it can be tuned if necessary, and how it connects to the broader trend of entity-centric search.

Identity resolution systems indicate if two individuals really are the same person. Identity retrieval systems help you find the individual you’re after. These systems appear anywhere from analysts’ desks to border crossings. But how do can you tell if a system's any good before it's deployed? You need to understand the problems it should tackle and how to measure how well it’s doing.
This talk considers metrics and data for evaluating identity resolution and retrieval systems. It also explores the linguistic challenges these systems face.
Entity extraction finds names in documents, providing important raw material for big decisions. But finding all mentions of the name “George Bush” is very different than finding all mentions of the 43rd US President. Making big decisions from big data is hopeless unless analytics advance from providing snippets of text to providing statements of truth. Such advances present challenges both of accuracy and of usability. We’ll explore these challenges and demonstrate ways of addressing them.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.
