Development of monoclonal antibodies WorkshopAngel Hernández
Report back on worshop held on Wednesday, June 3 ‐ Thursday, June 4, 2015, NIH, Rockville, Maryland
Purpose: Bring together key players to discuss the development pathway for broadly neutralizing monoclonal antibodies (bNAb) and bNAb‐containing regimen for the treatment and cure of HIV.
PCR testing for COVID-19 aims to detect individuals with a high likelihood of being infectious. However, false positive test results lead to false diagnoses, unnecessary measures and distort the overall picture of the pandemic.
Here is an article about why HIV/AIDS should still be on our radar: http://norwalk.patch.com/groups/zeena-nackerdiens-blog/p/why-hivaids-should-matter
The slide deck contains some of the latest info in the search for a durable cure.
Joseph Eron, M.D., of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, presents "The State of the Art in HIV Cure Research – Hope or Hype: What Does It Mean for Patients" at AIDS Clinical Rounds
Maternal colonization epidemiology studies - implications for vaccine studies...WAidid
The slideset is an overview on lessons learnt from maternal colonization epidemiology studies focused on:
- Association of maternal recto-vaginal GBS colonization and invasive GBS disease
- Correlate of protection against GBS colonization in pregnant women
The slideset underlines, moreover, the potential of GBS vaccine protecting against colonization:
- Could protect term and preterm (with early vaccination) newborns independent of antibody transfer.
- Protecting against maternal complications, including GBS associated chorioamnionitis and stillbirths.

What is Depression?
(1)Major depressive disorder: Combination of symptoms interfering with person’s ability to work, sleep, study, eat, & enjoy once-pleasurable activities. Disabling & prevents person from functioning normally. Often recurs in persons life.
(2)Dysthymic disorder: Long-term (> 2 years) but less severe symptoms that may not disable a person but can prevent one from functioning normally or feeling well.
(3)Psychotic depression: Severe depressive illness accompanied by some form of psychosis, such as break with reality, hallucinations, & delusions.
(4)Postpartum depression: When new mother develops major depressive episode within one month after delivery. Estimated that 10-15% women with postpartum depression after giving birth.
(5)Seasonal affective disorder (SAD): Depression during winter months, when less natural sunlight, that lifts during spring and summer. Half of these cases do not respond to light therapy alone but responsive to combo antidepressants, light, and psychotherapy.
(6)Bipolar disorder: Aka manic-depression. Cycling mood changes from extreme highs (mania) to extreme lows (depression).
‘Choice or eugenics? Past and future cultures of prenatal surveillance and se...ParentingCultureStudies
Prenatal diagnosis and termination of pregnancy began as a reform eugenics project of the post-war decades to release families from the burden of having children with inherited diseases. Later in the new culture of choice, screening as well as an even wider range of diagnostic tests was introduced. Today routine antenatal care is a ‘structured pathway’ comprising numerous visits to GP, midwife or clinic at specified times during the pregnancy. These involve genetic screening tests and ultrasound scans. Women identified at risk of fetal abnormality are referred for diagnostic testing by CVS or amniocentesis.

Breakthroughs in genetics have often raised complex ethical and legal questions, which loom ever larger as genetic testing is becoming more commonplace, affordable, and comprehensive and genetic editing becomes poised to be a consumer technology. As genetic technologies become more accessible to individuals, the ethical and legal questions around the consumer use of these technologies become more pressing.
As these questions become more pressing, now is the time to re-consider what ethical and regulatory safeguards should be implemented and discuss the many questions raised by advancements in consumer genetics.

C: Universal flexion
D: Cutaneous vasoconstrictions
Correct Ans:A
Explanation
Newborns capacity to generate heat by shivering is limited. Primary mechanism of heat
production in the neonate is through metabolism of brown fat or through non shivering
thermogenesis.
Major location of brown fat storage in neonates are upper back and neck, mediastinum
and around the kidneys. Brown fat contains hish stores of triglycerides which is broken
down into glycerol and fatty acids. Oxidation of fatty acids result in the generation of heat.

All of the following interventions are recommended to prevent mother to child
transmission of HIV, except:
A: Avoid breast feeding
B: Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART)
C: Vaginal delivery
D: Intrapartum Zidovudine
Correct Ans:C
Explanation
For HIVinfected mothers, a scheduled cesarean delivery at 38 weeks can reduce the risk of mother
to child transmission of the virus. If, before her scheduled cesarean delivery, rupture of
membranes or she goes into labor, a cesarean delivery may not reduce the risk of mother tochild
transmission of HIV.

B: ELISA for HIV
C: PCR for T.B
D: Hepatitis surface antigen for mother
Correct Ans:A
Explanation
This child is suffering from congenital syphilis. Here, this mother and infant require
quantitative nontreponemal (VDRL, RPR) syphilis testing.
The earliest manifestations of congenital syphilis (appearing 2–6 weeks after birth)
include rhinitis, or “snuffles” (23%); mucocutaneous lesions (35–41%); bone changes
(61%), including osteochondritis, osteitis, and periostitis detectable by xray examination
of long bones; hepatosplenomegaly (50%); lymphadenopathy (32%); anemia (34%);
jaundice (30%); thrombocytopenia; and leukocytosis.

Which of the following investigation is used in the detection and confirmation of HIV ?
A: Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)
B: Reverse TranscriptasePCR
C: Real Time PCR
D: Mimic PCR
Correct Ans:B
Explanation
Amount of virion packaged HIV 1 RNA in the peripheral blood is an important measure of
disease activity and effectiveness of antiretroviral therapy. This genomic viral RNA can be
measured by RTPCR. HIV1 RNA detection assays are highly sensitive and specific for
diagnosis of HIV1 infection.
PCR is extremely sensitive but cross contamination can occur. The standard blood
screening test for HIV infection is the ELISA. The most commonly used confirmatory test
is the Western blot. Western blot demonstrates antibodies to products of all three of the
major genes of HIV (gag, pol, and env).
The CD4+T cell count is the laboratory test generally accepted as the best indicator of the
immediate state of immunologic competence of the patient with HIV infection. The
hallmark of HIV disease progression is decline in the absolute number and percentage of
CD4 T lymphocytes and an increasing percentage of CD8 T lymphocytes.
In the early weeks after acute HIV infection acquired by highrisk behaviors, HIV
antibody may be absent. Most patients will seroconvert by 6 weeks.

A: SLE
B: Cystic fibrosis
C: Amyloidosis
D: HIV
Correct Ans:C
Explanation
Amyloidosis is a wellknown cause of nephrotic syndrome and
renal failure, which is usually associated with chronic inflammatory
disease (e.g. rheumatoid arthritis), chronic infections (e.g.
tuberculosis and bronchiectasis) or familial Mediterranean fever
(FMF). All of these conditions are associated with elevated
circulating levels of serum amyloid A (SAA). SAA is one of the
acute phase proteins in inflammation and is a precursor of AA
amyloid.
