Moving from user centred thinking to system thinkingNeil Turner
User-centred thinking has done the design community proud. However, whilst its laser beam focus on the user is an undoubted strength, it does sometimes mean that the wider user eco-system is not always considered. I'm going to introduce system thinking (also known as service design). System thinking is a way to not only consider the user but the wider system in which a user interacts with a service or product. Think of it as user-centred design 2.0!
This is a presentation that I gave at a SynchHerts meetup (http://www.meetup.com/SyncHerts/) on 7th Aug 2014.
Maintaining Continuous Learning Under Pressure Slides from Lean Agile Scotlan...Simon Phillips
Lean Product Development is predicated on validating assumptions that we make about the product we want to build in lightweight ways; user research, contextual studies, paper prototypes, simple clickable prototypes. A few short weeks of these activities can massively reduce the risk of building the wrong thing, and in a world where developing the wrong software can cost millions or sink a company, the investment can be well-worth the time.
So how do you structure a project so that Product and Design have an opportunity to answer necessary questions, while making sure you're not wasting developer resources or boring the crud out of your team?
This joint presentation by Pivotal Labs Product Manager Rosemary King, and UX Designer Simon Phillips will explore why up front investment in Discovery and Framing set up a project on solid foundation, how to involve development teams in the exploration and synthesis process, and how to set a cadence for your UX design work so that a comfortable buffer exists to allow for continual evolution of the product based on user feedback and changing understanding. Baked into the presentation will be case studies, challenges and lessons learned on recent lean/agile projects.

New York Bestseller Jake Knapp’s book, Sprint, explores how companies and teams can replicate Google’s sprint process to solve a problem within five days.
So how does a design sprint actually work, and how can you use a sprint to devise effective solutions in such a short period of time?
Enhance your productivity through design sprints, you’ll learn:
- What is a Design Sprint
- Design sprint case studies and success stories
- How you can run a design sprint effectively
There's a lot of content available about design sprints; what they are, how to run them, why they are useful. Key to them being successful is having a diverse team, including engineers. Very little of the content available covers the important role engineers play at this stage of product creation.

How does a technical writer build a super-productive relationship with an engineering team? While computing devices have highly customisable user interfaces,
common configuration requirements such preferred input device,
language, font, text size or colour have to be repeated on each device
used. Cloud4All is an EU project that is working to create an open
public infrastructure which defines a personal profile to be used to
configure any device. The profile is stored in the cloud and retrieved
by the user whenever they encounter a new device. This will give a
consistent experience on personal and public devices, such as cash and
ticket machines. It has additional benefits for accessibility for
those with some form of impairment such as a disability or difficult
physical location such as bright lighting. The project is working on
defining the profile ontology and format, creating the cloud based
infrastructure and protoyping applications that respond to
profile-based configuration settings. Eventually developer tools will
be created to provide easy access.
OpenDirective are part of the Cloud4all project consortium and their
contribution includes the development of a prototype application. This
application, Maavis, provides ultra simple access to cloud and local
media or communications and is designed for use cases that include
older people and those with dementia or other disabilities. The
application is designed to adapt to specific user and platform
needs. This talk introduce the concepts of cloud4all and the impact it
will have on both cloud connected and offline computing devices.
Dual Track Agile Or, How I learned to stop worrying and love the scrumUXDXConf
In software there are two key types of work - discovery and delivery. However, that doesn't mean there are different people doing those jobs. If the whole team is responsible for product success, not just getting things built, then the whole team needs to understand and contribute to both kinds of work.
Dual track agile and the UXDX model both convey the approach of design and development working together.
