The document discusses the history and development of logic from ancient times to modern times. It covers the major philosophers and schools of thought that contributed to logic, including Aristotle, Plato, the Stoics, Islamic philosophers like Avicenna and Al-Farabi, and progress in the 20th century with Gödel and Tarski. It also discusses the rise of modern logic in the 19th century as the field became more formalized and mathematical. The three basic functions of language are identified as the informative function, expressive function, and directive function.
One of the central attributes that distinguishes man from other living organisms is the ability to think. Without this distinctive characteristic, life would be hard to live. This course on logical reasoning is out to demonstrate the importance of logical reasoning in your daily lives in general and in your respective professions in particular.

There are a variety of possible reasons.
One has to do with the ability to read and write, which in turn has
to do with the alphabet. It is when ideas get recorded that they

Part 1. How Philosophy Began
1.1 From Mythos to Logos
In all ages of recorded history, human beings around the world have asked fundamental questions. Why are we here? Why does the universe exist? What is truth? How do we distinguish knowledge from opinion, reality from illusion, right from wrong? What is justice? Universal questions like these are fundamental in the sense that the answers we give to many other questions depend on the answers we have already given to these. The “fundamental questions of life,” as they are sometimes called, are important because the answers we give form the foundation of our worldview—our general understanding of the universe and our role within it. And whether we realize it or not, the choices we make in life all reflect, to one degree or another, our worldview.
At the beginning of the sixth century BC, most people around the world turned to their society’s myths (from the Greek root mythos) for answers to the fundamental questions of life. The ancient myths presented authoritative answers in the form of colorful, easily memorized stories that could be handed down orally from generation to generation. Here are three, from ancient Egypt, China, and Africa, respectively.
· A god named Khnemu, depicted as a man with a ram’s head, built an egg. When the egg hatched, the sun popped out. Khnemu then “sculpted the first man on a potter’s wheel.” This is the origin of man.[endnoteRef:2] [2: . “Khnemu (Khnum),” Ancient Egypt: The Mythology, last updated April 11, 2017, http://www.egyptianmyths.net/khnemu.htm.]
· In the beginning “there was darkness everywhere, and Chaos ruled. Within the darkness there formed an egg, and inside the egg the giant Pangu came into being. For aeons, safely inside the egg, Pangu slept and grew. When he had grown to a gigantic size he stretched out his huge limbs and broke the egg. The lighter parts of the egg floated upwards to form the heavens and the denser parts sank downwards, to become the earth. And so was formed earth and sky, Yin and Yang.”[endnoteRef:3] [3: . “Chinese Myths: Pangu and the Creation of the World,” Living Myths, last updated April 12, 2016, http://www.livingmyths.com/Chinese.htm.]
· In the beginning there was only darkness, water, and the great god Bumba. One day Bumba, in pain from a stomach ache, vomited up the sun. The sun dried up some of the water, leaving land. Still in pain, Bumba vomited up the moon, the stars, and then some animals: the leopard, the crocodile, the turtle, and, finally, some men. This is the origin of man.[endnoteRef:4] [4: . “African Creation Myths,” last modified Jul.

This slide corresponds with Wrench, McCroskey, and Richmond's (2008) Human Communication in Everyday Life: Explanations and Applications published by Allyn and Bacon.
These are the slides of a talk by Rens Bod presented on January 18, 2012 at WERELD BEELD, Amsterdam University College. The title is: How the Humanities Changed the World, Or why we should stop worrying and love the history of the humanities.
The humanities are under severe pressure worldwide. While the humanities have been viewed for centuries as the pinnacle of education, during the last forty years or so the study of art, history, literature, language and music is typically seen as a luxury, both by policy makers and the public. The humanities are an ornamentation of life but useless for technology, economy and industry. Humanities scholars have been unable to come up with a convincing answer to their marginalization. Arguments in favour of the humanities are defensive and get lost in mantra-like repetitions like: the humanistic disciplines are important for self-cultivation (Bildung), they are relevant for cultural and historical consciousness, and they form the basis for critical thinking and democracy. While these arguments may all be true, most scholars overlook the possibility that the assumption behind the image problem itself may be wrong.
Humanities scholars seem to have taken for granted that the humanities are economically irrelevant. Yet a quick glance over the history of the humanities shows the opposite: humanistic insights not only radically changed the world but they also resulted in concrete applications. As if humanities scholars have no idea of their own history – or decided to neglect a part of it -- these applications are attributed to the sciences. Here something has to be rectified, where the attack is the best defense.

the beginning of the nineteenth century had been
largely one of decline and neglect, and is
generally regarded as barren by historians of
logic. The revival of logic occurred in the mid-
nineteenth century, at the beginning of a
revolutionary period where the subject

exemplar was the exact method of proof used
in mathematics. The development of the modern

22. Three Basic Functions are generally
noted: there is perhaps nothing more
subtitle than language is and nothing
has as many different uses.
Without a doubt, identifying just
these Three basic functions is an
over simplification, but an awareness
of these functions is a good
introduction to the complexity of
language .
23. 1-Informative language function:
essentially, the communication of
information.
a. The informative function affirms or
denies propositions, as in science.
The Functions of Language
1-Informative language
2-Expressive language
3-Directive
language
24. b. This function is used to
describe the world or reason
about it (e.g… whether a state
of affairs is true or false).
c. These sentences have a
truth value; hence, they are
important for logic.
25. 2-Expressive language
function: reports feelings or
attitudes of the writer (or speaker),
or of the subject, or evokes feelings
in the reader (or listener).
a. Poetry is one of the best
examples, but much of, perhaps
most of, ordinary language
discourse is the expression of
emotions, feelings or attitudes.
26. b. Two main aspects are generally
noted : (1) to evoke certain
feelings and (2) to express
feelings. c.
Expressive discourse, qua
expressive discourse, is best
regarded as neither true or false.
E.g., Shakespeare's King Lear's
lament, "Ripeness is all!" Even so,
the nature of "fictional statements"
27. 3.Directive language function:
language used for the purpose of
Causing (or preventing) overt actions.
a. The directive function is most
commonly found in commands and
requests.
b. Directive language is not normally
considered true or false (although a logi
of commands have been developed).
c. Example: "Close the windows."
28. Many of the most common
words and phrases of any
language have both a literal or
descriptive meaning that refers
to the way things are and an
emotive meaning that expresses
some (positive or negative)
feeling about them.
emotive meaning
29. FACTORS OF COMMUNICATION
AND FUNCTIONS OF LANGUAGE
According to Jakobson any act of
verbal communication is composed
of six elements, or factors (the terms
of the model):1) a context (the
co-text, that is, the other verbal
signs in the same message, and the
world
30. (2) an addresser (a sender, or
enunciator ).
(3) an addressee (a receiver, or
enunciatee).
(4) a contact between an
addresser and addressee.
(5) a common code and
(6) a message.
