TO KNOW AND LEARN THE TRUTH ABOUT RETRACTION OF RIZAL.s
WHAT IS RETRACTION?
A retraction is a public statement made about an earlier statement that withdraws, cancel, refutes, or reverse the original statement or ceases and desist from publishing the original statement.
Rizal’s retraction letter was discovered by Father Manuel Garcia, C.M. in 1935, its content has become favorite subject of despute among academians and Catholic. This letter, dated December 29, 1896, was said to have been signed by the National hero Himself.
It stated: “I declare myself a Catholic and in this religion in which I was born and educated I wish to live and die. I retract with all my heart whatever in my words, writings, publications and conduct has been contrary to my character as son of the Catholic Church.”
The document of the retraction of Rizal, too, is being hotly debated as to its authenticity. It was supposed to have been signed by Rizal moments before his death. There were many witnesses, most Jesuits.
Fr. Manuel A. Garcia , found the document on May 13, 1935 at the Catholic Church Hierarchy's archived in Manila. But the original document was never shown to the public, only reproduction of it.
Fr. Pio Pi, a spanish Jesuit, reported that as early as 1907, the retraction of Rizal was copied verbatim and published in Spain, reprinted in Manila.
Later, another supposedly original document surfaced, it bears the date “December 29, 189C”. The number “0” was evidently altered to make it look like a letter “C”. Then still later, another supposedly original version came up, it has the date “December 29, 1896” the 0 became 6.
PROOFS, DOCUMENTS
History books tell most people that the first draft of the retraction was sent by Archbishop Bernardino Nozaleda to Rizal’s cell Port Santiago the night before his execution in Bagumbayan. But Rizal was said to have rejected the draft because it is lengtly.
Fr. Vicente Balaguer, a Jesuits missionary who befriended the hero during his exile in Dapitan, according to his testimony Rizal accepted a shorter retraction document prepared by the superior of the Jesuit Society in the Philippines, Fr. Po Pi.

National Shrine of Our Mother of Perpetual Help, The Baclaran Church, Paranaq...Fergus Ducharme
The National Shrine of Our Mother of Perpetual Help is located at the Baclaran Church in Manila. It is a rather modern Church and technically does not fit into the ‘mold’ of what we consider an Old and Historic Church. It was consecrated in 1958. It’s status as a National Shrine merits it consideration in our studies.

Another UNESCO World Heritage Site. A church in the 'countryside' of Iloilo Province that was built between 1787 and 1797 by Augustinian Friars as a 'Fortress Church' to protect the inhabitants from Moro/Muslim Pirates. They had been carrying out regular raiding parties along this coast of the Visayas from the 17th into the 19th centuries. They in fact destroyed the two previous iterations of the Church in Miagao dating back at least 150 to 200 years earlier.

The Church of the Immaculate Conception in Ogtong (Oton), Iloilo, One of the ...Fergus Ducharme
The original Chapel was built in Ogtong as it was then called in late 1566 by Friar Martin Rada. It was subsequently destroyed by a Dutch Raiding Party in 1614. The Church was rebuilt several times until the Mid-1860s when the largest, most ornate Church was consecreated in Oton. It was a veritable treasure that survived the Revolution and World War II and was unfortunately destroyed by the Lady CayCay Earthquake in January 1948. The quake was measured at 9.0 on the Richter Scale and it destroyed or levelled most of the buildings in the area. The Church was eventually rebuilt and finally consecrated in late 1966. That is the Church we see today!
The Church of the Black Nazarene, Quiapo, Manila, a very special and old ChuchFergus Ducharme
A little out of our comfort zone. We explore our first church in Manila. Do not miss this visit to the Church of San Pedro Bautista, better known as the Church of the Black Nazarene. The devotions of the Black Nazarene include parading a statue of the Nazarene through the streets of Manila on January 9th of each year. The procession normally takes between 18 and 23 hours to follow its entire course. It is attended by up to 9 million or more faithful who escort the statue on its processional through the streets. It is truly something to experience.
2. The Jaro Cathedral (Filipino: Ang Katedral ng Jaro) in Iloilo was built
in 1874 under the management of KGG. Mariano Cuartero, O.P., the first
bishop of Jaro. It was destroyed by anearthquake in January 1948. It was
later repaired in 1956 by the order of KGG. Jose Ma. Cuenco, the first
archbishop of Jaro.
On December 20, 1856, Graciano López Jaena (1856 – 1896), a
Filipino journalist, orator, and revolutionary from Iloilo, well known for his
written work, La Solidaridad, was baptized in this cathedral.
Now, the Jaro Cathedral is also known as the Nuestra Señora de la
Cadelaria (Our Lady of Candles). Notably, Pope John Paul VI conducted a
mass in 1982 and set a crown upon the Lady of the Candles, and declared it
as the Western Visayas’ Patroness. The statue is carrying a child in her left
hand and a lighted candle on the other. It is believed that the lady of
candles brings protection and divine illumination to one’s path if the person
asks for her help.

5. Every February 2, the centuries-old image of the
Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria is the main focus of annual
Jaro Fiesta. The image is placed in the façade of the church
and one can reach the niche through a staircase about 32
steps in each side. Before entering the Jaro Cathedral, a
monument of Jesus Christ and a monument of Mother
Mary, both inaugurated in February 1925 can be seen. The
exterior’s thick and sturdy walls probably made from lime
stones and the solid pillars inside the church makes the
church tough and strong against several earthquakes and
typhoons.
An image of St. Josemaria Escriva, the founder of Opus
Dei and “The Saint of Ordinary Life” can be seen inside the
church. Statues of different saints placed in the pillars and
the centuries-oldchandeliers are some of the features of the
church’s interiors.
In 1976, the National Historical Institute proclaimed the
Jaro Cathedral as a historical landmark.
