The Internet originated from a US military project in the late 1950s to create a communications network that could withstand a nuclear attack. In the 1960s, the US Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) developed the ARPANET, connecting computers at universities and research institutions. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, ARPANET evolved into a network for research and education, and in the 1990s the World Wide Web brought the Internet to the public with the creation of web browsers and search engines.
