This course requires a long-term investigative project. This project will require the formation of teams. As a team you will be asked to
defend a claim about a relevant political concept or phenomenon, and to connect
each of the following cultural artifacts to a concept or set of related concepts addressed in this course:

· An event
· A film
· A book or short story
· A painting
· A sculpture
· A musical composition
This project must include an explanatory essay and a presentation, which you will turn in as a team. The explanatory essay must conform either to MLA format or the Chicago Manual of Style, and be of sufficient length to incorporate each of the examples listed above. Depending on the size of your team, the minimum page length shall vary as follows:
· For a single author, the minimum length shall be 12 full pages in standard manuscript form.
The presentation must involve every member of your team, and must be presented in the session during Finals Week.
Unlike other information tasks in this course, the Semester Project is an Open Task rather than a Direct Task (Please see the Big6 Information Literacy presentation for details about the difference). You and your team are asked to construct your topic together. In the past, successful teams have built their project in a variety of ways. Some have connected their project in Government to their own specific fields of study or interest. Others have synthesized two or three thematic areas from the list of content themes appearing on page 3 of this document. A book review describes, analyzes, and evaluates the quality, meaning, and significance of a book. It is not a retelling. It should focus on the book's purpose, content, and authority. A critical book review is not a book report or a summary. It is a reaction paper in which strengths and weaknesses of the material are discussed and analyzed. Objective of Paper: This is a standard research paper based on secondary and primary sources. It should address its topic from a sociological perspective. Format: The paper must be typed in Times New Roman font, size 12, double-spaced. Points will be deducted for not following these specifications. Do not use color, include images, or provide a cover page. List your name, the course name, and the term at the top of the page, then write your title, then begin the paper. Papers must be at least 6 pages (not including the reference page). Points will be deducted if papers less than 6 and exceed 9 pages.
Citation Style: All citations (to be discussed later in this document) should be in American Sociological Association (ASA) format. This course requires a long-term investigative project. This project will require the formation of teams. As a team you will be asked to
defend a claim about a relevant political concept or phenomenon, and to connect
each of the following cultural artifacts to a concept or set of related concepts addressed in this course:

· A musical composition
This project must include an explanatory essay and a presentation, which you will turn in as a team. The explanatory essay must conform either to MLA format or the Chicago Manual of Style, and be of sufficient length to incorporate each of the examples listed above. Depending on the size of your team, the minimum page length shall vary as follows:
· For a single author, the minimum length shall be 12 full pages in standard manuscript form.
The presentation must involve every member of your team, and must be presented in the session during Finals Week.

A book review describes, analyzes, and evaluates the quality, meaning, and significance of a book. It is not a retelling. It should focus on the book's purpose, content, and authority. A critical book review is not a book report or a summary. It is a reaction paper in which strengths and weaknesses of the material are discussed and analyzed. Objective of Paper: This is a standard research paper based on secondary and primary sources. It should address its topic from a sociological perspective. This means that whatever topic you pick should be discussed using terminology from the readings and class discussions, should be critically examined (meaning its construction, labels, and groups should be discussed and critiqued), and should be placed in a larger context based on what we’ve read and the material we’ve discussed.
Format: The paper must be typed in Times New Roman font, size 12, double-spaced. Points will be deducted for not following these specifications. Do not use color, include images, or provide a cover page. List your name, the course name, and the term at the top of the page, then write your title, then begin the paper. Papers must be at least 6 pages (not including the reference page). Points will be deducted if papers less than 6 and exceed 9 pages.
Citation Style: All citations (to be discussed later in this document) should be in American Sociological Association (ASA) format. Layout of Paper: The paper should be divided into FIVE parts:
· Introduction: You will introduce your topic and briefly describe it. You must also tell the reader:

By the mid-20th century, the United States had become the dominant force in international relations. Some have argued that the United States’ military functions as the world’s “police.” This assignment covers the manner in which this shift occurred and the consequences the United States faces as a result of its status as “policeman of the world.” One can identify early steps this direction well before World War II, but in this paper focus on the period from the 1940s to the present. Take one of the positions as suggested below, draw from the sources listed, and present a paper with specific examples and arguments to demonstrate the validity of your position.

The American “policing” role developed because of the Cold War, but it became primarily a means for protecting and assisting economic interests for itself and its allies as illustrated by recent events as well as earlier ones.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in Education
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
