English 101 Research Paper
The research paper is the most important out-of-class writing assignment of the semester. It will be peer-reviewed in class before revision and submission in its final form. The due dates for all drafts are given in your syllabus. The essay will be graded on completion of the various phases of the assignment (topic selection, preliminary list of sources, outline, peer review) as well as the content of the final draft.
Instructions:
The paper must be written in MLA format, including a formal outline.
The approximate length of the essay is 8 to 10 pages.
The paper must cite at least 5 research sources, including the following:
- Doctor Zhivago
· One full-length text (book) by an authority on your topic. Recommended sources are books and ebooks specifically on your topic that appear in the LAMC library catalog. This requirement may also be satisfied by citing a textbook for a relevant subject such as political science, psychology, sociology or history.
· One scholarly journal article from the LAMC library databases. This will be an article designated “scholarly” or “peer reviewed” in one of the databases such as ProQuest or CQ Researcher.
· One other periodical. This may be a second scholarly journal article, or it may be a major metropolitan newspaper or a news magazine.
· One Internet site. This may be the web site of an organization that offers authoritative information on your topic, a web site that specializes in news reporting, or a web site you use as an example of popular opinion or pop culture.
In some cases, other sources such as interviews or government documents may be used as well.
Do not use or cite informal sources such as web sites that collect or sell student papers (e.g. echeat.com or 123helpme.com),blogs maintained by individuals or groups that do not have solid academic credentials, or Q&A sites such as ehow or about.com. Acceptable web sites include those maintained by university departments, libraries, museums or government agencies.
You may choose to consult dictionaries and encyclopedias to gain a better understanding of terminology and the history of some aspects of your topic. If so, these should be listed on your Works Cited page. However, they are not substitutes for the required sources listed above, and the information you use from them should be limited to definitions and basic background information.
The required five sources must not only be listed on your Works Cited page, but must be either quoted or paraphrased in the text of your essay.
Topic Choice Guidelines:
The topic is the influence of public perception of/by a social movement through the control of information in a particular historical period. Hello everyone,
The global societal issue that I have chosen to research for my final paper is the refugee crisis. Further research on this topic is important and absolutely necessary as the numbers continue to change. More people are dying, more people are seeking refuge in other places, more people are hungry. More people are being killed by rebels. The horror that these people have been facing for decades continues.
Thesis statement: More than twenty-five million refugees exist today. One-sixth of the world's population lives on less than one dollar a day. 1.1 billion people lack access to safe drinking water. One-third of the world has no electricity.
This global societal issue, the refugee crisis impacts a specific population indeed. 56 percent of the world's 21 million refugees are being hosted by just 10 countries - all in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia. Although America has much to do with the struggles of these countries, no American or European countries are suffering the way these people are. These are are people of color and it's disgusting when we can do a lot more to help.
The top five countries that account for the most refugees in the world today are countries that are already fighting for themselves. Still they are helping others seek refuge. There is so much to study in order to spread the message.

Above is the link to an article that I found more interesting than surprising. When I first started reading about the refugee crisis, Afghanistan was among the first countries on the list, right after Cambodia which followed Sierra Leone. This article provides updated statistic information which is something that is necessary for putting my paper together.

The Me Too movement has given women the opportunity to have their voices heard at a greater extent. Because the Me Too movement is in its full effect, it is essential to understand the inequalities that exist and the progress that has to happen in the world to close that gap.
Thesis statement
While Gender inequality is not as vast as before, gender inequality is still persistent in all aspects of our society because It is observed in the workplace, it is seen it in politics, and it is most evident in the world of sports.
Gender inequality not only affects female professionals around the world. It also affects young men and women who are growing up and viewing the differences in how society perceives the two genders. Women are considered more nurturing therefore they tend to focus more on family time than their men counterpart, therefore when it comes to considering who will go the extra mile if both have families, the belief is that men ...

Project 2 Media Bias
Need 4 pages and all 4 key request needed in paper!!!!!
There is no question that the media plays an important role in our political system. For most Americans, the mass media, particularly television, is the most important source of political information. Because of this, the news media has attracted significant attention from scholars of politics and communications, politicians and journalists themselves. Frequently, this attention has come in the form of criticisms of how the media presents the news. The media has been criticized for many possible forms of bias --ideological bias, selection bias and commercial bias. Among the specific criticisms of the press are that its coverage of the news is overly negative, lacking in substance, and driven by crisis.
Ideologically speaking, charges of liberal bias are probably the most frequently heard, but many liberals believe that news coverage contains a lot of conservative bias as well. Begin by reading the handout on evaluating the media from Brill’s Content. Brill's Content was a magazine devoted to reporting on the media, especially the news media. This article discusses how to be a critical consumer of news.
1. After reading the Brill’s Content article visit the next two sites. The Media Research
Center
http://www.mediaresearch.org/
is a conservative organization that maintains that media coverage is biased towards the left.Ensure you have discussed Brill's Content in your paper.
2. The group, Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting,
http://www.fair.org/
, is a liberal watchdog group that holds the opposite opinion. Read what these sites have to offer (briefings, reports, etc.). Which side (AIM or FAIR) has a more convincing argument? AIM
http://www.aim.org/
Explain. Again, ensure you discuss in your paper.
3. Now do some investigating of your own. I want you to do some reading or viewing of the mainstream media. Does the coverage that you see/read tend to favor one viewpoint or party over another? Discuss. Do you detect any patterns in what reporters choose to cover and how they report it? Discuss. How do you evaluate the criticisms leveled at the media raised in class or on the websites?
How does MONEY play a role in media bias - give me specifics?
4. Respond to these questions by examining articles in several recent issues of
one
of the major U.S. newsmagazines,
Newsweek
,
Time
, or
U.S. News and World Report
. They all have websites that post articles if you don’t have access to print editions. Alternatively, you may watch the nightly
national
news broadcasts on any of the major networks for several days.
Be sure to discuss
specific examples
in your paper.
Conclude the paper with a discussion of what role you think the media should play in a democracy.
Any articles that you quote from or cite in your paper should be included in a bibliography. For examples of how to cite works for your bibliography check out the Center for Academic.

Paper Three
“We weren’t interested in doing a story about the ‘fake news’ that is invoked by politicians against the media for stories that they don’t like or for comments that they don’t like…
We’re using the term “fake news” to describe stories that are provably false, have enormous traction in the culture, and are consumed by millions of people.”
--Michael Radutzky, 60 Minutes Overtime, CBS News
Perhaps the most difficult aspect of doing research in 2017 is figuring out how to evaluate sources. Chris Hayes, in Twilight of the Elites, refers to what he calls “the most destructive effect of the fail decade”:
The cascade of elite failure has discredited not only elites and our central institutions, but the very mental habits we use to form our beliefs about the world. At the same time, the Internet has produced an unprecedented amount of information to sort through and radically expanded the arduous task of figuring out just whom to trust. (106)
Here, Hayes makes the point that it is not just that news media outlets and elites that have been “discredited”; it’s that the “mental habits” or shortcuts we thought we could rely on to form our ideas about the world have been discredited too. By our “mental habits,” Hayes means the “mental habit” of trusting what he calls “old sources of authority” that have been discredited or compromised. By 2016, the problem of what information to trust had become far more serious.
Paper Three asks you to examine one aspect of the “arduous task” of figuring out what information and which sources and authorities we can trust. Write a paper in which you examine one of the following problems researchers encounter in evaluating sources. See the list on page 2 for more specific project ideas for these problems.
1. Recognizing Propaganda and determining its source and purpose. (e.g., Nazi propaganda in WWII)
2. Recognizing fake news. (e.g., “pizzagate”)
3. Dealing with writers or speakers who use “alternative facts” (that is, information that has been distorted, faked or twisted. (e.g., the “Sandy Hook is a hoax” truthers; 9/11 truthers; global climate change deniers)
4. Recognizing the bias or agenda (political, ideological or economic) of information sources (newspapers, cable TV networks, websites, broadcast TV news, local TV news, political parties, advocacy groups, lobbyists, PR departments of corporations, etc.)
As you examine one of these issues, you will also need to show how ordinary readers and listeners can learn to identify sources that are not credible, that rely on lies and distortions, and that are intended to mislead the public. Finally, why does it matter if we can’t trust “the news”?
General Points:
· It will be important to define your terms carefully. What is “fake news,” for example? Note the epigraph above distinguishes “fake news” from “news that people don’t like” or “news that challenges peoples’ prejudices.” You will to define terms like “fake news,” “alternative facts,” “propa.
Annotated BibliographyDefinition · A bibliography is a list o.docxdurantheseldine
Annotated Bibliography
Definition:
· A bibliography is a list of sources (books, journals, Web sites, periodicals, etc.) one is using for researching a topic. Bibliographies are sometimes called "References" or "Works Cited" depending on the style format you are using. A bibliography usually just includes the bibliographic information (i.e., the author, title, publisher, etc.).
· An annotation is a summary and/or evaluation. Therefore, an annotated bibliography includes a summary and evaluation of each of the sources.
Outline
· APA citation of the source (alphabetical order)
· Brief summary of the major arguments and details of the source
· Analysis of the source
· Why and how the source is effective toward your essay
Format
· Single space
Why should I write an annotated bibliography?
· To learn about your topic: Writing an annotated bibliography is excellent preparation for a research project. Just collecting sources for a bibliography is useful, but when you have to write annotations for each source, you're forced to read each source more carefully. You begin to read more critically instead of just collecting information. Every good research paper is an argument. The purpose of research is to state and support a thesis. So a very important part of research is developing a thesis that is debatable, interesting, and current. Writing an annotated bibliography can help you gain a good perspective on what is being said about your topic. By reading and responding to a variety of sources on a topic, you'll start to see what the issues are, what people are arguing about, and you'll then be able to develop your own point of view.

Battle, K. (2007). Child poverty: The evolution and impact of child benefits. In Covell, K., & Howe, R. B. (Eds), A question of commitment: Children's rights in Canada (pp. 21-44). Waterloo, ON: Wilfrid Laurier University Press.
Ken Battle draws on his research as an extensively-published policy analyst, and a close study of some government documents, to explain child benefits in Canada. He outlines some fundamental assumptions supporting the belief that all society members should contribute to the upbringing of children. His comparison of Canadian child poverty rates to those in other countries provides a useful wake-up to anyone assuming Canadian society is doing a good job of protecting children from want. He pays particular attention to the National Child Benefit (NCB), arguing that it did not deserve the criticism it received from politicians and journalists. He outlines the NCB’s development, costs, and benefits, including its dollar contribution to a typical recipient’s income.
Battle does offer a valuable source for this essay, because the chapter provides a concise overview of government-funded assistance currently available to parents. This offers context for analyzing the scope and financial reality of child poverty in Canada, and it will help me broaden my research beyond .

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Library session for POLS 3760 - Looking at Alternative Viewpoints
1. Looking at alternative
viewpoints
Library workshop for POLS 3760

2. Learning Outcomes
By the end of today’s session, you will be able to:
Differentiate between mainstream and alternative media
Search for and identify information sources that provide
alternative points of view
Predict the terminology that writers with different viewpoints
would use to describe the same issue
4. Alternative Media
Mainstream media: Generally controlled by governments and large
corporations
CNN, BBC, Reuters, etc.
Editorial position generally reflects mainstream opinion
Alternative media: Smaller, independent sources of information
Allow for dissenting points of view to be heard
Internet has made access to alternative media much easier than in
the past
6. Alternative Media Resources
Alternative media websites useful for security studies:
Independent Media Center, http://www.indymedia.org
Initially established by independent and alternative media organizations and activists in 1999 to provide grassroots
coverage of the WTO protests in Seattle
New Internationalist, http://www.newint.org
A self-described communications cooperative reporting on issues of world poverty and inequality
Inter Press Service, http://www.ips.org
A global news agency that aims to raise the voices of the South and civil society on issues of development,
globalisation, human rights, and the environment
The above sources were identified using Mount Allison University Libraries’ Alternative Media Guide: http://www.mta.ca/library/
alternative_media.html. Check it out yourself for more sources, and for additional information on alternative media.
7. Useful database
Opposing Viewpoints Research Centre
Covers controversial contemporary social issues, providing
the views and opinions of both sides of the debate
You can find the database by typing the name into OneSearch, or by
using our Databases A-Z list
8. Reading Exercise: Independent Media
Read this article from the Mother Jones
website, and think about the following:
1.What kind of tone/style does the author
employ?
2.Can you tell what political views the
author holds?
3.How is this article different from an
article you might read on mainstream
news websites? (e.g. BBC, CNN, etc.)
10. Words, words, words...
The words (search terms) you use
are important. In fact, word choice
can introduce bias into your
searches.
For example, using the keywords
CIA and torture will make it
hard to find sources on this topic
that very purposefully avoid using
the word “torture”
11. Euphemism
Euphemism means the use of
mild or indirect expressions when
referring to something unpleasant or
embarrassing
For example, egg industry
spokespeople may talk about the
“instantaneous fragmentation” of
unwanted male chicks

12. Role play
If you were: Would you use the phrase:
The leader of Sinn Fein IRA TERRORIST?
The Iranian Foreign Minister NUCLEAR PROLIFERATION?
A Sudanese government spokesperson DARFUR GENOCIDE?
The CEO of Blackwater MERCENARIES?
The head of the CIA TORTURE?
13. Exercise - Identifying alternate terms
Working in small groups, come up with some alternate terms
and euphemisms for the topic you have been given
Apart from your own knowledge, try searching Google and
Wikipedia for examples
Submit your ideas to the online poll at:
