About The Semester Project
This course requires a long-term investigative project. This project will require the formation of teams. As a team you will be asked to
defend a claim about a relevant political concept or phenomenon, and to connect
each of the following cultural artifacts to a concept or set of related concepts addressed in this course:

· An event
· A film
· A book or short story
· A painting
· A sculpture
· A musical composition
This project must include an explanatory essay and a presentation, which you will turn in as a team. The explanatory essay must conform either to MLA format or the Chicago Manual of Style, and be of sufficient length to incorporate each of the examples listed above. Depending on the size of your team, the minimum page length shall vary as follows:
· For a single author, the minimum length shall be 12 full pages in standard manuscript form.
The presentation must involve every member of your team, and must be presented in the session during Finals Week.
Unlike other information tasks in this course, the Semester Project is an Open Task rather than a Direct Task (Please see the Big6 Information Literacy presentation for details about the difference). You and your team are asked to construct your topic together. In the past, successful teams have built their project in a variety of ways. Some have connected their project in Government to their own specific fields of study or interest. Others have synthesized two or three thematic areas from the list of content themes appearing on page 3 of this document. Remember also that for this project, the article you and your team compose should be a unified article, in that the reader should not be able easily to tell where one author ends and another begins; that is, if you have more than one member of your team.

Task: Write a 3-4- page essay where you describe and analyze an argument, plus
a one-page reflection on confirmation bias.
For your first essay, you will analyze a text making a strong argument. The task is not to argue in favor of
a particular conclusion, but to examine the rhetorical moves the writer uses to make his or her case. You
choose the text, but but it must represent a point of view conflicting with something on the list of “five
things” about which you have strong feelings that you posted on the class blog. If stuck, you can choose a
subject you’ve thought of since. The idea is to engage, but that’s not the same as asking you to agree. One
way of thinking about it is as if your subject is like a table. What are its strongest and weakest legs?
Perhaps one “leg” is quite strong but if left on its own would it be more likely to “topple” so to speak?
Doing so will be hard. The best essays often benefit from subjects that use a range of rhetorical moves.
Essay must be typed and printed in a 12-point standard font, double-spaced, with a title, name, date, etc.

Examples of potential subjects:
For instance, if you said you think it’s too hard to start a small business, you will want to find someone

find something that takes a different tact. Or, say you have a more generalized belief like “the U.S. is

These and other MiraCosta databases can be accessed for free at MCC libraries or at home (using your Surf password). Simply click on “Library” on the MCC website, and then click on “All Online Databases” under “Online Resources.”
You should start your research with your textbooks (check the index), Britannica Online (or another trustworthy encyclopedia), and the Opposing Viewpoints database. Then, after you have a better understanding of your issue, you can move on to other specific sources such as newspaper and journal articles, newsmagazines such as Newsweek and Time, websites for political parties and other sources.
You will need to use at least 8 different sources for your paper other than your course textbooks. At least three of your sources must be something other than websites (i.e articles, books, etc). The fall of Communism and the rise of global threats and globalization leveled the playing field for nations throughout the world. Nations began to expand their economic strategies, political theories, and collaborate to create new foreign policies. This new era of globalization hastened the progress of developing countries, but also provided resources for terrorist activities. Former tensions between rivals with varying religious and ethnic practices reared its ugly head leading to an increase in terrorism. This, in turn, lead nations and global governing bodies such as NATO, to react.
Last week you had the opportunity to reflect upon the information you have acquired during this course when you completed your Final Project. This week, you will be able to expand upon that reflection and review your fellow classmates' Final Projects. You will also examine the events from 1945–2000 and assess the effects and consequences of globalization. You will have the opportunity to analyze their opinions and consider how they compare and contrast to your own beliefs. Will their thoughts affect your viewpoints in the future?

Objective of Paper: This is a standard research paper based on secondary and primary sources. It should address its topic from a sociological perspective. For much of 2011 and 2012, public dissatisfaction with Congress rose to all time highs, with 70-80% expressing disapproval with how Congress does its job. Many commentators note that Americans are fed up with Washington "grid-lock" that makes government apparently unable to address important problems. Other observers believe that the national government is acting according to its design, based on separation of powers and checks and balances.
Before writing your initial post, review the assigned resources. To easily access the resources from the Ashford University Library, please see the table located in the Course Materials section.
In your initial post of at least 200-250 words, analyze how the U.S. Constitution implements separation of powers and checks and balances. Briefly explain why the constitutional framers based the new government on these ideas. Evaluate how separation of powers and checks and balances are working out in practice, today, justifying your assessment with persuasive reasoning and examples.
Fully respond to all parts of the question. Write in your own words. Support your position with APA citations to two or more of the assigned resources required for this discussion. Globalization.
Do you look at this concept as a positive (glass half-full) or negative (glass half-empty)?
The fall of Communism and the rise of global threats and globalization leveled the playing field for nations throughout the world. Nations began to expand their economic strategies, political theories, and collaborate to create new foreign policies. This new era of globalization hastened the progress of developing countries, but also provided resources for terrorist activities. Former tensions between rivals with varying religious and ethnic practices reared its ugly head leading to an increase in terrorism. This, in turn, lead nations and global governing bodies such as NATO, to react.
Last week you had the opportunity to reflect upon the information you have acquired during this course when you completed your Final Project. This week, you will be able to expand upon that reflection and review your fellow classmates' Final Projects. You will also examine the events from 1945–2000 and assess the effects and consequences of globalization. You will have the opportunity to analyze their opinions and consider how they compare and contrast to your own beliefs. Will their thoughts affect your viewpoints in the future?

A Short Paper Assignment allows you, early in the course, to demonstrate your research skills to your instructor and to receive feedback that will benefit you when you write your research paper. With this assignment, you will learn how to do proper and adequate research and write a short paper and prepare you for writing the research paper.
This short paper is at least three double-spaced pages of text (Times New Roman, font size 12) and you must consult a minimum of two academically credible sources. Bibliographies and citations will be in the Chicago Manual of Style format.
The short paper needs to be turned in through the assignment section for grading. If you use any of the information from your sources word-for-word, you must cite the source by using endnotes or footnotes. The Federalist and the Republican Parties only emerged after George Washington became president; they are not the same thing as the Federalists and the anti-Federalists who debated the ratification of the new Constitution in 1787 and 1788. Moreover, this paper is not about the debate over the ratification of the Constitution, but about how and why national leaders broke into two political factions (or parties) as the Washington and Adams administrations sought to deal with domestic and foreign policy issues. Objective of Paper: This is a standard research paper based on secondary and primary sources. It should address its topic from a sociological perspective. This means that whatever topic you pick should be discussed using terminology from the readings and class discussions, should be critically examined (meaning its construction, labels, and groups should be discussed and critiqued), and should be placed in a larger context based on what we’ve read and the material we’ve discussed.
Format: The paper must be typed in Times New Roman font, size 12, double-spaced. Points will be deducted for not following these specifications. Do not use color, include images, or provide a cover page. List your name, the course name, and the term at the top of the page, then write your title, then begin the paper. Papers must be at least 6 pages (not including the reference page). Points will be deducted if papers less than 6 and exceed 9 pages.
Citation Style: All citations (to be discussed later in this document) should be in American Sociological Association (ASA) format. See this website: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/583/02/ for information on in-text citations as well as reference page formatting (you’ll have to click on a link to get to the reference page specifications). All citations must appear in the text. You cannot simply list them all at the end of the paper. Layout of Paper: The paper should be divided into FIVE parts:
· Introduction: You will introduce your topic and briefly describe it. You must also tell the reader:
· Why this topic should be interesting to an average reader (e.g., why should I care about the history of the “insanity” please in US courts if I am not a lawyer?)
· Why the topic is sociological
· Literature Review: Since you are probably not the first person to research this topic, you should do some reading of past authors’ works. You should give a summary of their works and explain why it is important to be aware of their works before doing your own research on your topic. You must use a minimum of 4 sources in your literature review. Also, you may only use academic sources or government publications. Acceptable sources are: academic books, journal articles from peer-reviewed journals, and government publications. Unacceptable sources include (but are not limited to): magazines, newspapers, blogs, “.com” websites, online news articles, or non-academic books. There are two major types of literature to look for:
· Literature which covers your topic specifically

Pneumonia is diagnosed by the presence of fluid (dark shadows in an X ray) in the alveoli. Since pneumonia usually is caused by a microorganism, what causes the fluid accumulation? Name a bacterium, a virus, a fungus, a protozoan, and a helminth that can cause pneumonia.
Students will individually examine why pneumonia –an infection of the respiratory tract is among the most damaging. Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
A Strategic Approach: GenAI in Education
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
