ø Occupation: Physician
ø Most outstanding figures in the history of medicine.
ø Environmental factors, diet, and living habits
ø Father of Medicine
ø The ‘Hippocratic Oath’ is an oath taken by physicians
and other healthcare professionals swearing to practice
medicine honestly.
The Hippocratic Oath is one of the most widely known of Greek
medical texts. It requires a new physician to swear upon a number
of healing gods that he will uphold a number of professional ethical
standards.
Contribution to
Epidemiology
The first epidemiologist explain the causes of disease and
death in human populations in a systematic manner.
The first to base his conclusions on observations. Some of
his important contributions to epidemiology are
summarized below.
i.He was the first individual who attempted to use rational
versus supernatural means to explain disease occurrence.
ii.He recognized that disease not only affects individuals
but populations as well.

iii.He wrote three books that dealt with epidemiologic
concepts-Epidemic I, Epidemic Ⅲ and air, water and
place.
iv.He differentiated between endemic disease and
epidemic disease
v.He recognized associations between environmental and
other factors (example: water conditions, housing, diet,
