Hildegard von Bingen was a 12th century German nun, writer, composer, philosopher and visionary. She overcame social barriers as a woman to have a wide-ranging career, writing on topics like theology, natural history, cosmology and medicine. She experienced visions from a young age and was eventually commanded by God in a vision to write down her visions. Though initially reluctant due to fear of criticism from men, she gained approval from the Catholic Church for her writings, including her first major work Scivias, which increased her fame throughout Germany and beyond.
