Hijab Essay
STATEMENT OF INTENT
The genre for this piece of writing is column writing. My intended audience is young adults who are
interested in gaining an insider's perspective into what goes on in the mind of a hijab–wearer in
today's society. The purpose of this piece is to explore different aspects of the hijab and factors that
may influence a teenager to wear it. The idea I am developing is how different factors have
influenced my journey with wearing the hijab. Language features I will use to create effects include:
alliteration, simile, personification, rhetorical question and rhyming.
UNDEREXPOSED
A story of my internal struggles with intentions, choices and the hijab
"Why do you wear that?" A simple question, that when asked by a girl in class the other day, caused
me to pause, and contemplate. Maths class was not the time or place to have an internal crisis about
my intentions! So as usual, I blurted out, "I have to – it's part of my faith". But that isn't exactly the
whole truth. True, I cover my hair partly because I feel obliged to as a Muslim. But beyond that, I do
it because... in all honesty, I don 't know. Is it out of habit? Modesty? Guilt? Maybe it 's all of these
things. Maybe it 's none. I 'm writing this in selfish hope that I 'll be able to find my own answers to
those nagging questions that live inside my head and threaten to show themselves at moments when
I least expect them – on the bus going to school, in the middle of cleaning my room, during the

Varying Dress Codes In Schools
"I just feel like [the dress code] needs to be explained better, like they need to do a better job of
presenting it to us, instead of just saying we can wear crew necks and then taking us out of class if
we wear our crew necks," (Tori Taylor). This quote is a perfect example of how dress codes are not
properly executed in schools all across America. Varying depending on school, dress codes can be
confusing and extremely hard to navigate. Girls all over the country have been forced to take time
out of their day to change or even leave the school, because of shirts they've worn a thousand times
before. If there is a shirt that supposedly breaks dress code, a girl should be reprimanded every
single time she wears it, right? Wrong. This is because

Dress Codes In Schools
"Tallie Doyle was sent to the principals office at her elementary school recently for violating a dress
code prohibiting spaghetti–strap tank tops, she and her mother publicly challenged the policy as
sexist and silly"(Maclean's) More than half of public schools enforce a dress code and they all
contain an underlying basis of sexism because of the stereotypes lain out by past generations. But
the world is becoming more and more open–minded, so why not schools and their dress codes?
Dress codes are sexist and should be changed seeing as they target girls with a specific body type,
teach boys to objectify women, and the schools in which they are implemented in are reinforcing
gender inequality through them.
Girls with a distinct body ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A statistic showed that "(In 2009–10) about 57 percent of public school principals reported that their
schools enforced a dress code. The codes themselves vary; some rules are intended to promote
modesty and others to encourage a respectful learning environment" (Dell'Antonia). However, it is
not always the dress code that is sexist. Some dress codes, such as Churchill's, are written with
gender equality in mind but the way the school's enforce them, make them sexist. A student will
rarely see a fellow male peer getting pulled out of his learning environment and told to change
because the teachers find that his outfit can be proven to be distracting to the learning environment.
On the flipside, girls will be pulled out of the learning environment and forced to changed because
their outfit or attire can "prove to be a distraction". The issue here is not that these dress codes are
written with sexism in mind its that the way schools enforce them is sexist. A girl could be told her
outfit is indecent for the school environment because it could be seen as a distraction to the male
population of the school, possibly. Teachers will interpret what they see as inappropriate by what
they experienced as a teen but the issue with that is that everyone has a different perceived world
based on their past so dress codes get muddled and hard to understand in common agreeance, as

I 'm Considering Becoming A Sports Fan
We come across many different cultures and fashion in our society. Some may indicate that the
culture influences one's fashion while others may oppose and state that each aspect stands alone.
Fashion and culture fall into the following identity categories: chosen and assigned. Culture affects
many parts of an individual, in some cases you can determine an individual 's culture by their speech
and clothing; in addition to traditions and the environment in which they were raised. Whereas
fashion may be impacted by culture and tradition, but it may also not interact with culture at all.
When it came to Arab culture there were many restrictions and less freedom with appearance and
fashion. Even though the Arab culture may have many restrictions when it came to fashion it has
been modernized. The Arab culture prohibits a few dress codes that may be considered norm in
American culture. As an individual who grew up in an Arab culture household you have to adapt to
the culture and rituals. Just as Andy Hinds mentioned in his article, I'm considering Becoming a
Sports Fan How Do I Pick a Team? "In both of these exchanges, I had that old familiar feeling of
not having a clue about something that was supposed to be important to me as an American male." It
may also prohibit multiple actions that may be dealt and interpreted in other cultures in a different
way. Arab culture is made up of hundreds of years old traditions. Many fashion styles are considered
disintegrating in the

Mary Wollstonecraft Chapter 7 Summary
In Chapter Seven, Wollstonecraft deeply discusses the idea of modesty and its overall meaning. She
argues that modesty is different than humility and bashfulness, and that it is a virtue instead of a
quality. She also discusses how modesty contributes to the idea of sexual pleasure, and how that
differs from both men and women.
In relation to women, she discusses that a modest woman is one that puts time into intellectual
pursuits rather than sexual ones. She states "A woman who has dedicated much of her time to purely
intellectual pursuits, and whose affections have been exercised by humane plans of usefulness, must
as a natural consequence have more purity of mind than the ignorant beings whose time and
thoughts have been occupied by gay

Why Modesty Is Bad
Biblical Modesty In society today, modesty no longer has a strong appeal to young women because
it is not the "cool" thing to do. However, more and more people are starting to think that self–
expression and individuality are more important than being modesty. The media portrays women as
being "sexual objects" rather than being respectable human beings. Many popular women on TV, in
movies, and in music videos are not only dressing in provocative ways, but they are also acting in
inappropriate ways to get the attention of their male viewers. Although, many women might say
that, the way that they dress does not affect the way that a man looks at them. The Bible tells us that
modesty begins with the heart. A woman has to have the desire in her heart to want to be modest and
show humility in the way that she carries herself. "This means modesty is not simply about what we
wear, but how we act, how we communicate, and how relate to others" (6 Marks). In other words,
modesty is more about showing decency by respecting oneself and others. The term itself means
"regard to decency of behavior, speech, and dress" (Dictionary). ... Show more content on

"Modesty is the voluntary personal responsibility to behave [and] dress in such a manner as to not
purposely draw attention to oneself, and to not think proudly of oneself..." (ModestFeminineAttire).
Modesty does not always have to deal with what someone is wearing, however, it has more to do
with what is beneath the clothing, the heart. The Bible talks about how Christian women should
have the desire to dress in a respectable manner, so that they do not purposely draw the attention of
a man. 1 Timothy 2:9 says, "... women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness
and sobriety." In this day and age, young women should be taught to "guard her mind, heart and
body"

What Are The Arguments Against Student Dress Code Essay
A person's attire identifies who they are. Clothing can show a person's economic status, ethnic
background, or religion. While a student's fashion choice is usually seen as a mode of expression, it
is more likely to be seen as a problem that requires a dress code to be enforced. For example,
different and unknown clothing styles tend to evoke ridicule from students who perceive the attire as
abnormal. Also, young women are judged incorrectly based on their clothing, and are more likely to
be criticized for their clothing choice rather than boys. To prevent the issues of cultural and status–
based discrimination, sexual harassment and violence, and gender bias, the enforcement of a dress
code is necessary. The clothing that a student chooses to wear is not only a mode of expression, but
also a way to instantly be classified by teenage ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"Dress identifies the wearer's community to other groups and communities, and may also reflect
one's status"(Arthur). Stereotypically, if a student was wearing a preppy outfit, they would instantly
be judged as someone who is reasonably wealthy. However, if one were to wear a worn out shirt, old
jeans, and no accessories, they would be judged as someone who does not have a high economic
status. In high school, students tend to discriminate against those who seem different to them.
Someone with a lower economic status or different clothing style is more likely to be targeted by
teenage bullies. If one dresses differently due to their religion or ethnic background, it is also seen as
a reason for bullying. In the United States, many individuals are ignorant of other cultures, and
when one dresses to represent their ethnic background, they are subject to

The Importance Of Dress Codes In Society
There has always been something up with the rights and roles women have in society. They receive
objectification for almost everything they attempt and are told to fit into these roles that men aren't
even asked to try. We are told and taught from a young age to act a certain way or receive certain
consequences. We fear cat calls for trying to look good for our own confidence, and are shut down
for trying to dress the way we want because of a "lack of modesty". The way women dress is highly
criticized, and it doesn't only go for older women, but for younger girls as well. Regarding dress
codes, although some see it as a means to keep "drama" down and students concentrated in class,
most to all school dress codes limit a female's ability to express herself through her clothing. This is
a matter that needs to be changed.
Let's start with the basics, the dictionary definition of clothes are "the things that people wear to
cover their bodies and that are usually made from cloth", and the parts of the body we "need" to
cover are really just dictated by society. For example, men and women both have nipples, and yet
women are told by the world that they need to hide their nipples while men can roam free without a
shirt. Our human culture tells us that certain areas of a person's body, some parts more than others,
need to be hidden. This programming in our heads is one of the roots of the conflict in school dress
codes.
Clothing is a way that many, especially those discovering

Examples Of False Modesty
Introduction:
The topic selected by me is 'False Modesty'. I was interested in this topic because of the quote by
Alan Bennett 'All modesty is false modesty; otherwise it wouldn't be modesty.' In order for a person
to be modest, they must not claim that they had a big role to play in their success. In fact, they must
acknowledge others contribution more than their own. When someone tries to give other people
credits for their achievement, they do this with the idea of showing people that they are modest,
which is false modesty.
False Modesty:
Instead of praising, some people tend to disparage themselves. This is known as false modesty.
There are many reasons as to why people do that. One is that they want to hear back comments from

DuS talk about the use of the words 'we' and 'I' in order to show modesty and immodesty. According
to them active speech is always more direct and forceful. So the use of language can help us learn
more about false modesty. (DuS, 1959). In another research paper George Parsons Lathrop talks
about modesty among the readers. He feels that the readers are at first free from immodesty. But
after reading the novels, the idea of modesty and immodesty gets into them. They ability of the
readers to judge if the actions of the character is modest comes only after they have read the novels.
But then he also puts forth a question that if the readers are able to judge modesty and immodesty,
this trait must be in them even before they read the book. Thus, it would not be right to say that it
was the novel which affected their ability to judge modesty, false modesty or immodesty. (Lathrop,

July Act Of Modesty
In life acts of modesty and kindness go a long way in the eyes of society, as they are influential for
the world's younger generations. This is why for July's act of kindness I performed an admirable act
in order to possibly influence the others around me to do the same. This type of considerate act is
what makes our world prosper through the bad and reminisce in the good by showing how people
should treat one another. Since I am a counselor in training at a camp in Long Island, I am
responsible for watching over a group of children that are between the ages of ten and twelve years
old. Of course at this age in a young childs life, the children are like sponges in the way in which
they absorb information from others around them. This is why

Women Years Ago Vs. Women Today
Women one hundred years ago VS women today Women one hundred years ago were drastically
different than women today in many aspects of their lives. Soon after the turn of the 20th century, a
surge in women's independence surfaced. This was largely due to the fact that women were urged by
Rosie the Riveter and other propaganda to replace men in factory jobs to support the war effort and
provide income for their families. Women's lifestyles changed from then on, including their
hairstyles, clothing, and overall personalities. The culture surrounding women in the early 1900's,
especially in terms of the way that they dressed, was drastically different than that surrounding
women in today's society. The typical everyday clothes that women would wear in the 1900's were
usually long dresses or clothes that covered most of their bodies. Between the years 1900–1909
there were two key trends, the La Belle Epoque and the Gibson Girl. They were very much alike,
they both consisted of a corset to make the waist skinnier and the bosom and backside larger, but it
remained modest to the standards of that period. Both of these styles were very high class and were
custom for the wealthier people of the day, this is due to the dresses being made out of luxury
fabrics and rhinestones. However, from 1910–1919, the styles began to change when women
became tired of wearing the puffy dresses and tight corsets. They wanted something more
comfortable, so they came out with three styles called

Cultural Differences In I Am Malala
"The Taliban could take our pens and our books, but they could not stop our minds from thinking,"
(Malala). I read a non–fiction book called I am Malala by Malala Yousafzai. This book is an
extraordinary story about the life of a girl who got shot for standing up for herself, and women's
rights. I was amazed at all of the cultural difference there were, so I will be comparing our culture
with theirs. The first thing that I had noticed was how the women were expected to dress. Secondly,
I noticed that the role women play was very limiting in their culture. Even the food that they ate was
very different! I also noticed that their religion and faith were a very large part of their culture.
When I wake up in the morning I usually throw on a pair of leggings and a t–shirt and call it good
for the rest of the day, but in Pakistan this is not the case, women are expected to wear burqa (this is
a full body cloak that covers everything except your eyes) . In the United States women can wear
whatever they want for the most part. The burqa is worn as part of their religion, it is supposed to
mean modesty and privacy. This is defiantly not what I would wear in a hot, humid place. The men
in their culture do not have a strict dress code like the women, they can pretty much wear whatever

Malala is an extraordinary person that I think every women/girl should thank for being so public
about her opinion on women's rights. She got shot in the head, she was simply riding her school bus
home. Very few people expected her to live, but she made it. In conclusion, although our cultures are
extremely different, we must remember that we are all human and all have rights. We should always

Dress Code Controversy Or Helpful
The Dress Code; Helpful or Hurtful
What you wear affects how people think of you. This is comparable to an advertisement for the
lunch special. If what's uncovered is not on the menu, then keep it covered. The student dress code
is an issue with much controversy. Some may say that it is all preposterous but in actuality the dress
code is for the students benefit. Let's take a look into the current North Middle School standards.
Students at NMS Must have clothes that cover undergarments, have a modest inseam, and pajamas
and slippers are not allowed. They must also cover their back, cleavage, midriff, and bottom.
Shoulder straps must be 1 inch thick, and no clothing referencing drugs, alcohol, weapons, tobacco,
or any obscenity are allowed. As you will see, there many reason why the school dress code is
correct. It helps kids focus, build good standards, and be ready for their future occupations.
First off, immodest clothing is a big distraction in the learning environment. You can't expect
someone half naked to not be looked at. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

they have found a way to keep it with them constantly. Just because you wear it on your shirts does
not make anything less appalling. Other people may speak as boldly as to say that it is a violation of
the first amendment, but obviously the first amendment only grants the freedom of speech if it is not
harmful to anyone. Swear words are the most vulgar offensive words out there. As for the
pronography, it is an complete disgrace and disgust. Wearing unclothed men and women on one's
bodily attire is utterly repulsive. As for everything else, the more and more you "joke" about those
things the more comfortable you become with it. Before you know it, "(giggle giggle) Wanna try
some weed? (hehehe)" will become "Hey, why don't ya smoke a little pot with us,

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Hijab
INTRODUCTION: There are various codes of conducts and dress codes in every religion of world.
These dress codes are specifically associated with that particular set of religious peoples. Muslims
have a hijab dress code for women, the dress was introduced with the intention to cover the body so
that they are not judged by their physical appearance. Hijab is the most critical image in Muslim
world for speaking to ladies. It spares a women from being scrutinized, monitor them from

The fashionable Hijab is actually just a form of dress which is being worn to satisfy your inner
feeling that you are wearning hijab and is also moving on with the world. The fashionable hijab
trend had been popularized so that women's can feel satisfied that they are the part of society. They
are looking to gain same outlook and same treatment which a women without hijab gain. (Gressel,
2014) Hijab is the protective shield which should not lose its essence it's important that hijab is
having a long lasting impact on your life. The inspiration which one get from it is satisfactory

us in analyzing the perception of local peoples regarding these trends and our question that whether
this trend of fashionable hijab will help in changing this perception that Hijab is an object of
oppression. Users provided a neutral response in this regard and mentioned that Hijab is not an
object of oppression so this fashion trend is not making a big difference in this regard. Many peoples
hold an option that Hijab should be worn in a modest manner so that its dignity can be maintained
and young generation should be encouraged to make best sue of non–fashionable hijab. Many

Textual Codes Essay
Possibly one of the most prevalent codes in daily living all across the world is how people dress.
The cloth people choose to cover their bodies with on a day–to–day basis says a lot about the
individual and about that society. It can serve as a clue to what that person believes morally, what
part of the world they come from, and even a message they are trying to send. According to Daniel
Chandler in his book Semiotics: The Basics, "Semioticians seek to identify codes and the tacit rules
and constraints which underlie the production and interpretation of meaning within each code"
(Chandler 2007: 148). Chandler goes on to discuss three different types of codes within his book
consisting of social codes, textual codes, and interpretive codes. The variety of styles worn across
various cultures reveals something about the social codes. The textual codes can be seen in how
clothing is advertised, and what this means across the various cultures whether it serves to

Dressing Modesty
One of my core beliefs that has shaped who I am today has resulted from dressing modestly.
Dressing modestly is important to me because so often in this present age, one's body is displayed as
a mere object. Not only is modesty, chastity, and purity important in one's spiritual life, it is also
crucial to society. One might ask why it is so imperative that modesty be discussed. Well, one
constantly hears reports of rape, molesting, and how high the rate of pornography viewers is. Thus,
how is one to destroy these horrible acts except by how one dresses. I am not saying that dressing
modestly will completely obliterate sexual assault, but it will certainly cut down on how often it
occurs.
I have always dressed modestly ever since I was a young child, but it was not until I was fourteen
years of age that I decided that I would begin to wear skirts rather than pants and shorts. What
influenced this was when I began to perceive the rate of women and young girls being raped. I felt
that as a young lady, it was my duty not to tempt young men to look at me as something other than a
young lady with thoughts and opinions of my own; I did not want to be a distraction, but rather a
helper and friend. As I grew older I began to realize how it was not only beneficial to others, but
also to myself. I noticed that my self–worth began to rise as well as how I judged myself.
Furthermore, I began to distinguish that I was beginning to be my own person. How did I experience
this? Well, I was

The Look, By Nancy Leigh Demoss
Many women consider modesty to be an outdated principle founded on legalistic ideas and a
promotion of chauvinism. Although this is the prevailing thought within society, it could not be
farther from the truth. In "The Look," a book written by Nancy leigh Demoss, she explains the
misconceptions people have about modesty and explains what it truly is: an intentional
representation of Christ through every aspect of our lives. I have had a fairly decent view of
modesty growing up, and I have always held it in high regards when it comes to clothing, yet I
failed to realize that it is a matter of the heart and not just about the clothes that I wear. Demoss'
book has provided me with a new understanding of modesty, as well as how to apply it. Through my
reading, the most influential piece of information that I have learned is that God does care about a
woman's modesty in the areas of dress, intent, and appearance.
A Woman's Dress Before I explain the importance of why a woman should dress modestly, I believe
that it is important to address why a woman should dress. In Genesis 3 we find the story of the fall
of man: Adam and Eve sinned against God and broke the relationship between Him and them. When
Adam and Eve broke their relationship with God it allowed for sin to enter the earth, which opened
their eyes to their own nakedness. After realizing that they were exposed they sewed fig leaves
together to make clothing, but it only covered their private parts, not their bodies. God

Pros And Cons Of School Dress Codes
Today, most states have laws that allow school boards to make dress code rules for students within
their district to promote a safe, disciplined school environment, prevent interference with
schoolwork and discipline, and to encourage uniformity of student dress("School Dress Codes.") .
Dress codes are needed and is a good idea for students to follow that gives them structure and
realistic views on how they should portray themselves in the world. By following dress codes, it
terminates the salacious feelings that may arise due to revealing clothes worn by students, it

In the end, the dress code is only set in place so students aren't strayed away from their learning. It
may seem that the dress codes are targeted at young women, but it's set in place to benefit the whole
as a group, and teach the young girls modesty. Although, what one person may find acceptable,
another person might not. To prevent this situation as best as possible, most schools will set forth
standards that are straight forward and what they think is reasonable for the majority. There have
been some cases where students have felt that their first amendment has been taken away. For
example, there was a case where a student wore a black armband to protest against the adoption of
uniforms in school, and the federal judge who heard the case ordered that the student had the right to
do so ( "Faqs."). When it comes down to it, there is a lot to consider when it's time to draw the line
and where boundaries have been crossed. When dealing with identity, students may feel that having
restrictions on what they are allowed to wear can take away from their identity. This however can be
easily dealt with. The dress codes only prohibit clothing that takes away from the learning
environment and there are reasonable expectations set in

Religious Beliefs And The Role Of Dress In The Religious...
Religious ideologies regarding dress are based on religious organizations individual dogmas, who
believe that your outwardly appearance should reflect your inner beliefs. Similarly, adhering to a
strict code of dress, that symbolizes its group's traditions and customs, also helps in controlling the
body's sexuality. Hunt–Hurst and Miller–Spillman (2012) stated that being "well–dressed (modestly)
is a religious duty and not a personal preference" (p. 266). Dress in a matter of speaking is an
outwardly symbol of religious identification and showing ones connectedness to their religious
organization. Arthur (n.d.) believes "a group identity is projected through dress because people use
self–presentation and self–promotion to visually present identity that is congruent with their belief
systems" (Religion and Dress, para. 1). Since each religious organization perceives the role of dress,
as it pertains to the expression of identity, differently one must also understand the basis of said
religious organizations beliefs in order to comprehend how their beliefs mirror the role of dress.
Islam is a monotheistic faith, one that believes in a single God, emphasizes submission to God or
Allah, as well as the group over the individual. The Qur'an, the literal word of God, lays out the role
of dress and its meaning for both men and women (Hunt–Hurst & Miller–Spillman, 2012; Islam,
2017). According to the Qur'an men are to lower their gaze and be modest, which is purer for them,

Professionalism : Professionalism And Prejudice In Schools
Professionalism or Prejudice Dress codes in schools have become a primary part of the education
system and monitor what students are allowed to wear on a daily basis. These codes are set into
place to maintain professionalism on school grounds and avoid distractions. The issue seems to be
the standards at which girls are held to compared to boys. Schools have banned everything from
yoga pants to collar bones and everything in between (Dress Code Sexism). Boys are still allowed to
wear sport shorts that rise higher than the average skirt yet the skirt is banned. While maintaining
professionalism may be the motive behind some dress restrictions, it is not consistent for both
genders. Dress codes in schools are sexist, and apply to girls more so than they do boys. Girls being
told to be less distracting, boys not having the same enforcements, and female objectification are all
reasons as to why dress codes are sexist. From a young age girls are taught to cover up their bodies
to avoid being distracting and to maintain professionalism. Emily Miller dismisses several of the
excuses schools use to justify off the wall dress codes, in her article "Dress Code Sexism". A
familiar saying heard when a girl asks why she should change is that it is distracting to boys and
inhibits their learning. Miller states, "This concept is beyond belief. Because a female student's body
might pose a distraction to a male student's education, her education is interrupted and put on hold

What is modesty? What does it mean to be modest? Maybe it is a feeling or style. Is it the way

code has made girls resort to wearing jeans in 95 degree weather, stop attempting to wear tank tops

handbook states that they are not to be worn and hers was particularly "offensive" due to the tribal
pattern. This was the only instance in which someone has asked to remove a headband, despite the
dress code stating that they are not allowed, just like hoodies and other articles of clothing that
involve something covering a student's head. While part of the problem may be the students with the
mentality that it is not the clothing they are wearing that is the problem but the people who look at
them sexually in the classroom, others do understand that we can all maintain modesty and still be
allowed to wear shorts during the warmer months (Deciphering the Dress Code). The students that
wear inappropriate clothing repeatedly should be punished for their actions, but not an entire student
body should be punished for the actions of a select few individuals who just happen to be repeat

Peoria Notre Dame Case Study
It has come to the attention of select students that a dilemma exists within the guidelines for out of
uniform days within the halls of Peoria Notre Dame High School. A substantial amount of high
school girls, particularly in the freshmen class, ignore a particular rule banning the donning of tight
yoga pants during the school hours of 7:55 to 3:05. An idea to amend the misconduct has been
developed. In analyzing the situation, it is apparent the legging–perpetrators are primarily freshman
girls with a high sense of self–entitlement. The underclassmen believe they have the right to
undermine the guidelines of the Peoria Notre Dame handbook. The prestigious establishment placed
these regulations to ensure modesty amongst all pupils. The problem ... Show more content on

At the court, a trial will occur where select administration will decide upon the guilt of the student,
the severity of the crime, and the duration of the punishment. The teacher who witnessed the
violation, the Dean of Students, and the Principal of Peoria Notre Dame must all be present at the
trial. The teacher will first present the case to the Dean and Principal. If the student has any
objections to the information presented, she may bring forth her concerns at the given time. The
judge will then inquire about any other important details that may influence the severity of the
punishment. For example, if the female has worn a longer shirt (which reaches at least mid thigh)
with the leggings the sentence may be lessened. The pupil will then leave the court to discuss the
final verdict. If the student is found guilty, she will be sentenced to wear a trash bag for a certain
amount of time, which will be determined by the judge. If the length of punishment is substantial
enough, the student may be allowed to decorate their trash bag to their individual taste. Peoria Notre

How Should Dress Codes Be Changed
In the past days as the weather has improved, I have noticed a plethora of girls being dresscoded, to
a standard I believe is inaccurate and biased. Girls are being removed from classroom settings to no
one's benefit, strict dress codes are promoting stereotypes and negative ideas, and dresscode almost
never affects guys I believe our dress code should be changed due to its unfair and shaming nature. I
have personally had experiences with being removed from a classroom due to dresscode, who is that
helping? The teachers, who will have to catch me up the next day. Is it helping me? The student who
is missing vital information. Is it helping those who may be distracted by my "risque" clothing. The
clothing they can't see because i'm sitting down. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is the kind of thinking that leads to slut shaming girls, oppressive gender roles, and promotion
of rape culture. I know that sounds dramatic and over the top but, all of these deep rooted issues we
have in society have to start somewhere. What are we telling our youth by treating girls based off
their sexual value from a young age?
Despite all the issues with the female dress code I have never once seen a boy prosecuted for his
clothing. I have seen boys with surfer tank tops on that are far less than three fingers. I've seen boys
nipples from cutout shirts that they are not wearing anything underneath, and I have seen boys with
sagging pants so low you can see their underwear and despite that being a strict no no in the
handbook they are not punished, not to mention derogatory T–shirt with sexist, racist, and
homophobic things written on them, that boys constantly get away with

Modesty: The Mormon Temple
the church for sexual sin and not be in Gods glory, or be a member and settle for being an angle, or
pray and God will help an individual to be able to marry in the temple with the opposite sex. Even
though Mormons might not support same–sex marriage and especially in the temple, they are
interacted to be kind and loving for everyone is God's children.
Another situation in which the church had to defend their believes and the divinity of the temple is
in modesty. In society modesty has changed in where modesty is within the beholders eyes. Media
has taken modesty and thrown it out because it does not sell millions of dollars like sex does.
Therefore, young women and men are no longer modest rather they follow the trained of the media.

Cultural Conflict : The Eyes Of A Strict Culture Descendant
Cultural Conflict In the eyes of a strict culture descendant, the American culture would be a
mockery to the traditional Pakistani culture. My daily life has been surrounded by American
traditions as opposed to my parents ' expectations pertaining to their culture. The Pakistani culture
revolves around many aspects including education, marriage and family, body image, and
interactions with the public. Education is highly stressed in typical Pakistani families, and most
families prefer their children to become doctors or lawyers since both professions hold an elite
position in society. The marriage aspect tends to aggravate the Pakistani community, including me,
which is only bounded to arranged marriages, leaving it to the parents to make a lifelong decision
for their children. Body image is generally pertained to women, who are obliged to dressing
"modestly" or otherwise, would be considered "shameless." Interactions with the public are also
limited to women, who are restricted from any contact with males, and critically forbidden to have
any sexual relations before marriage. These cultural restrictions and practices are associated with my
parents ' expectations towards me, which disharmonize and create conflict with the current society. I
've been absorbed into the black hole of American morals and standards and it 's inconceivable to
depart from its hollow atmosphere. In my parents ' perspective, education is seen as the sole path to
success, which I fully concede

Cultural Identity Who I Am
I am born of cultural identity but only I am me. Cultural identity is a part of person's self–concept
and self–perception. It is equivalent to nationality, religion, ethnicity, social class, and different
generations. Cultural identity has to do with a person individually or socially. Everyone has a
cultural identity. Knowing her you come from can give you a sense of belonging and a sense of self.
My culture identity is composed of several factors. Cultural identity is a part of who I am. It has
shaped aspects of my personality, my beliefs and values. It is a factor in how I dress, how I behave
and my hopes and dreams for the future. My hijab and my personality shape my cultural identity;
however, my cultural identity portrayed by the media does not influences me as person.
There is saying, "Your veil is your mouth if your tongue is silent." For me that "veil" is my hijab and
it is my "mouth". Ladies in Islamic culture dress modestly. A woman is required to start dressing
modestly at a certain age, typically when she hits puberty. One thing a girl starts wearing, after the
1st grade, is the hijab. The hijab itself symbolizes modesty, privacy, and protection; however, others
see it as an object that represents oppression and terrorism. It means so much more. The hijab, in my
opinion, protects a woman from strangers, especially men. It shows that the woman is off–limits to
all other men besides her husband. It also compels men to focus on the woman's personality and

Should Christians Keep Up With The Latest Styles?
The topic that I have chosen is should Christians keep up with the latest styles? A lot of times in
society a culture has been created that in church you have to be more old school with the suit, and
tie. In today's age the younger crowd of believers are not attracted to God through dressing up in a
way that would make them selves feel uncomfortable. The argument then becomes whether or not it
is acceptable for the Christian believer to keep up with the latest trends or are those trends pushing
them away from God by the way they dress.
Christians in today's society more, and more are coming to churches that they are taken where they
are no matter how they look. A lot of our older generation has been apart of a culture that you need

("The Corruption") If society always stayed in the mentality of sticking with what ever were done in
the past then society would have a hard time advancing future generations. Modesty is based on
cultural context. There are cultural differences such as the USA vs. France. (Hermeneutics) In the
country we live in it is not ok to be in public nude. Then in France they are more open to things such
as nude beaches. Obviously there are boundaries like that one that shouldn't be ok. At the same time
though we have to be aware of the culture that we are in and, how do you fit in to be apart. If you
have to ask someone if what your wearing is ok then its probably not all that ok. (Christian Men) If
as the body of Christ we weren't willing to hangout with the people who were non–believers then no
one would get saved. What if the mentality changed of always doing what we have done and we
became more apart of the generation who is looking for acceptance. Now there is also a difference
between being in the world, and letting the world become us. In today society we are called to live,
and do life with the lost, but we also cannot let it change where we are in our walk with God. The
thing about styles, and fashion trends is just because; a crowd of people in the church culture doesn't
like it doesn't mean it's automatically sinful or immoral. If you don't want to be in the conversation
of if your modest wear things that are non revealing.("Latest

Persecution Of Women
Women are celebrated through their differences by publicity that focuses on the rights of women to
dress as the deem fit. Exposure in the media allows for either positive or negative responses to the
topic at hand. The publicity garnered by the beauty and lifestyle magazines resonate with the
modern populous. The contorted views of Islam in the media has given society a negative basis of
the attire of Muslim women. Unlike men, women in Islam have a more obvious means of expressing
their religion through their clothing choices. Elle is a major beauty and culture media outlet. Their
magazines have worldwide influence, thus they are accountable for the fashion ideals and societial
opinions of men and women.

Modest dress is not unique to Islam, infact modest attire predates Islam. Nuns wear apostolmiks and
Jewish women wear wigs to cover their hair, so Muslim women are entitled to wear burkas, niqabs,
and hijabs as they please. Women should be able to define themselves without looking for societal
approval and acknowledgement. Hijab should not be the defining characteristic of Muslim women.
Over 750 million Muslim women are labeled by the garnments they wear, and the labels they
physically wear should be a testiment to the humility the hijab represents. As women, self–
definition is key to overcoming the societal endownment of who you are protrayed to be. Social
terms should not be able to dictate the lives of women. Women are entitled to equal oppourtunity no

School Dress Code Bias Essay
Are School Dress Codes a Biased Policy? In schools all across the country, dress codes are used to
dictate what students can and cannot wear. Some schools, especially private schools, even go as far
as to use a school uniform. While school dress codes are meant to promote a focused learning
environment, they have a tendency to enforce stricter guidelines on girls than boys. For example, in
many schools, girls are not allowed to wear shorts or skirts that do not reach a certain length, tank
tops, low–cut blouses, or leggings. In the rulebook, restrictions like these are given the explanation
"for modesty purposes", however, there are no similar restrictions on boys' attire. Girls' attire is
often chastised for being "inappropriate" or "distracting to the boys", but the opposite never seems
to occur. This is why I believe school dress codes are a biased policy. Enforcement of the school
dress code seems to be aimed almost exclusively at girls. At Tottenville High School in Staten
Island, New York, over 200 detention slips were distributed to students for dress code violations
within the first few days of the semester, when the heat was in its prime, with the recipients being
around 90% female ("Schools Are Still Slut–Shaming Girls While Enforcing Dress Code"). Also, a
school in North Dakota recently banned girls from wearing skinny jeans, ... Show more content on

The Rise Of Fashion And Downfall
Is it the rise of fashion or downfall in taste. Everyone knows a little bit about fashion, because
everyone wears clothes, lately, it 's been noticeable that fashion is taking a steep decline, the
celebrities have a big influence on fashion, because many people look up to them, celebrities rarely
wear clothes anymore though, because modesty has all but been thrown out the window, and it is
sterling to affect everyone in this day and age. Everyone wears clothes! Whether it is shorts, pants,
tank top, t–shirt. We all wear clothes so we aren 't naked! But as you can see it is getting less and
less modest. And everyone might has a religion that allows them to wear that kind of stuff and show

What I've only just begun to realize is that these two extremes represent different sides of the same
coin. While popular culture tends to disempower women by telling them they must dress to get men
to look at them, the modesty culture tends to disempower women by telling them they must dress to
keep men from looking at them.It is important here to make a distinction between attraction and lust.
Attraction is a natural biological response to beauty; lust obsesses on that attraction until it grows
into a sense of ownership, a drive to conquer and claim. When Jesus warns that "everyone who
looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart," he uses the same
word found in the Ten Commandments to refer to a person who "covets" his neighbor's property.
Lust takes attraction and turns it into the coveting of a woman's body as though it were property.
And men are responsible for their own thoughts and actions when this happens; they don't get to
blame it on what a woman is wearing. Many discussions of modesty, from diverse cultural or
religious perspectives, revolve around the idea of keeping sinful and unholy female bodies and body
parts from the gaze of others – particularly men. This privileges the male gaze, in a backward sort of
way, and puts females at a disadvantage for being the ones in control of what others think or feel
when seeing their bodies. When we speak of modesty

All Men Are Created Equal
It's not surprising that a nation, built under the principal of "all men are created equal", would
discriminate against women. In today's society, the traditional roles, values, and thoughts placed
upon women from prehistoric times still play a central part in the inequality women face every day.
The day I no longer have to worry about what I'm wearing will label me as a "slut," is the day that
women will be thought of as more than just sexual objects. The day I can be praised for my brains
instead of my beauty, it the day men and women will be considered equal. This is the future I hope
to foster. This is the future where the line "all men are created equal" means all humans and not just
men.
Since the start of the agricultural revolution, social structure has moved from egalitarian to
patriarchal. Men were stronger, and thus more valuable to handle the labor of farming, while women
were left to take care of the house and children. Even though in the past fifteen years society has
made great leaps towards equality, society is still far from egalitarian. The oppressive traditional
roles from the Neolithic era are still shoved down a woman's throat from an early age. A woman is
expected to stay at home and raise the kids, instead of going off to work and leave the kids with a
nanny. The essay, "Turkey's in the Kitchen", highlights how women are trained to work in the
kitchen, whereas, most men are inept when it comes to anything cooking related. School systems

Modesty In Othello
Camille Pissarro says," Blessed are they who see beautiful things in humble places where other

important part of our lives; something that most of us take for granted. We need to take this in and
look around. How could we have forgotten about something so critical? I remember the first time I
noticed what it means to be humble. It was the year of 2017, in the season of winter. My mother and
I were going out to buy at Rue21. We went in, shopped, and then headed home; tired due to all of
the perfume aromas. Right as we got in the car, I saw someone in the distance. Someone with a 'help

The Ideas, Meanings, And Power Dynamics
The ideas, meanings, and power dynamics in the three books we read are very different, however
some similarities are present. As far as veiling, the meanings within each book are primarily
complimentary. When looking at the views on how certain affairs, such as veiling, should be
enforced and interacted with, we see more skewed ideas. In general, all three show hegemonic
qualities, yet Young and Defiant in Tehran reveals more dominating than hegemonic qualities.
Veiling is an extremely debated and controversial topic all over the world. From what has been
revealed, it can be presumed that a substantial difference of veiling across the board, is enforcement.
From Veiled Sentiments to Young and Defiant in Tehran, the differences in ideas regarding veiling
are noticeably contrasting. The three anthropology texts involved, include further inside information
and feelings regarding veiling. In Veiled Sentiments by Lila Abu–Lughod, veiling is a choice and is
not forced on women. Due to the faith and freedom of choice, most women willingly and happily
veil properly. Although sexuality is not a popular norm among the Bedouin, it is not the sole reason
for veiling. Granted, women will be criticized and mocked for not veiling or taking part in sexual
affiliations. Such mockery is described in a story where grandmothers react to the granddaughters
Western–style negligees. Once the grandmothers had found out about them, they put them on,
initially embarrassing the girls,

School Dress Codes And Uniforms
"Cleanliness, neatness, modesty, decency, and appropriateness in dressing are important values
which reflect an individual dignity and sobriety through which students of every university represent
their status as learned scholars" (Omojuwa, 2014, p. 1). The issue of school dress codes and
uniforms is relevant in today's society because it affects nearly everyone since everyone goes
through some sort of schooling. The issue of dress codes particularly affects the students, the
parents, and the school faculty. Students are constantly wearing new fashion trends that may be
distracting in the learning environment. This issue relates to social justice because the
implementation of uniforms diminishes socioeconomic differences. Uniforms create equality and a
sense of unity despite identity and cultural differences within the school community. Uniforms teach
students to look beyond themselves and focus on how they can serve others. Dress codes and
uniforms uphold the value of modesty. I believe that schools should enforce at least a dress code,
and a uniform if they wish because they promote social justice, a call for service, and they uphold
one's human dignity. To begin, the controversial issue of school dress codes and uniforms relates to
social justice because everyone deserves educational opportunity and immodest or inappropriate
dress can distract from the productivity of the learning environment. According to a survey

Modesty is a hot topic among evangelicals – one that often turns into a culture war argument. If
you're like me, you may have grown tired of the conversation. It feels a little lop–sided, and I can't
help but think we're missing a big piece of the puzzle. Modesty is a value that should permeate our
whole lives, so why do we only talk about it in reference to a woman's body?
In 1 Samuel 16, God sends Samuel to find a new king for Israel. Samuel meets many men looking
for the perfect fit. Tall? Check. Dark? Check. Handsome? Check. But God has someone different in
mind. He turns Samuel's eyes away from those who look the part and says, "People look at the
outward appearance, but God looks at the heart." You might accuse me of taking this verse

The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints Essay
When analyzing conflicting sources on specific topics, it is important to consider the background of
the author to reveal his or her motivation behind writing the piece. When writing about cults, there
are inside sources (current members) and outside sources that encompass everything from ex–
members to the media. Jessica Longaker, a non–affiliate of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter–day
Saints, posted a critique of the patriarchal influence on Mormonism and how it affects the role of
women in the church. Sheri L. Dew, a current member of the church that serves as the Relief Society
General President, gave a speech was published on the Church's official website. In this speech,
Dew describes how Mormonism empowers women and emphasize the importance of their role.
When analyzing conflicting sources, it is crucial to analyze the author's position in order to detect
motivations and bias that can influence the message that is being portrayed. In order to offset this
bias and gain a complete understanding of the topic, researchers must analyze points of intersection,
similarities, and differences between the two sources. According to Longaker, "all Mormon men are
ordained as members of the "priesthood," with the absolute authority to preach the gospel...and
generally speak for God" (Longaker). She continues by stating that women have the "important
ability to bear children, men need the power of the priesthood merely to remain equal with them."
(Longaker). Longaker emphasizes

Meaning Of The Hijab
In my second year in college, when I had finally settled in and people had a better understanding of
me, I had numerous people come and tell me – "I did not know you were this liberal, friendly or
open minded.", when I asked why that was, the reply always remained the same – "You wear a
hijab, lead me to thinking you were religious." The conversations always closed with the same
statement from me – "A piece of cloth on my head does not measure my devotion to my religion." In
modern times, the hijab has become symbolic of one's religiousness, beyond just being an item of
clothing that is embraced by women who follow the religion of Islam. The idea of a woman being
religious as she is wearing the hijab is as valid as stating that a person is a good chef, since he is
wearing the chef's hat. This common misinterpretation also leads some people to believe that
Muslim women who do not wear the hijab are not religious. What the present society fails to
understand is the true purpose and meaning of the hijab, while they misunderstand the concept and
assume that only the religious Muslim women wear the hijab. Hence, I believe that the society must
stop misinterpreting the religious connotations of the hijab, as wearing the hijab does not make one
religious. The hijab is a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

hijabi is religious is justified as Islam encourages to practice only what we truly believe and

Hijab Essay

  • 1. Hijab Essay STATEMENT OF INTENT The genre for this piece of writing is column writing. My intended audience is young adults who are interested in gaining an insider's perspective into what goes on in the mind of a hijab–wearer in today's society. The purpose of this piece is to explore different aspects of the hijab and factors that may influence a teenager to wear it. The idea I am developing is how different factors have influenced my journey with wearing the hijab. Language features I will use to create effects include: alliteration, simile, personification, rhetorical question and rhyming. UNDEREXPOSED A story of my internal struggles with intentions, choices and the hijab "Why do you wear that?" A simple question, that when asked by a girl in class the other day, caused me to pause, and contemplate. Maths class was not the time or place to have an internal crisis about my intentions! So as usual, I blurted out, "I have to – it's part of my faith". But that isn't exactly the whole truth. True, I cover my hair partly because I feel obliged to as a Muslim. But beyond that, I do it because... in all honesty, I don 't know. Is it out of habit? Modesty? Guilt? Maybe it 's all of these things. Maybe it 's none. I 'm writing this in selfish hope that I 'll be able to find my own answers to those nagging questions that live inside my head and threaten to show themselves at moments when I least expect them – on the bus going to school, in the middle of cleaning my room, during the ... • 3. Varying Dress Codes In Schools "I just feel like [the dress code] needs to be explained better, like they need to do a better job of presenting it to us, instead of just saying we can wear crew necks and then taking us out of class if we wear our crew necks," (Tori Taylor). This quote is a perfect example of how dress codes are not properly executed in schools all across America. Varying depending on school, dress codes can be confusing and extremely hard to navigate. Girls all over the country have been forced to take time out of their day to change or even leave the school, because of shirts they've worn a thousand times before. If there is a shirt that supposedly breaks dress code, a girl should be reprimanded every single time she wears it, right? Wrong. This is because ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Dress Codes In Schools "Tallie Doyle was sent to the principals office at her elementary school recently for violating a dress code prohibiting spaghetti–strap tank tops, she and her mother publicly challenged the policy as sexist and silly"(Maclean's) More than half of public schools enforce a dress code and they all contain an underlying basis of sexism because of the stereotypes lain out by past generations. But the world is becoming more and more open–minded, so why not schools and their dress codes? Dress codes are sexist and should be changed seeing as they target girls with a specific body type, teach boys to objectify women, and the schools in which they are implemented in are reinforcing gender inequality through them. Girls with a distinct body ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A statistic showed that "(In 2009–10) about 57 percent of public school principals reported that their schools enforced a dress code. The codes themselves vary; some rules are intended to promote modesty and others to encourage a respectful learning environment" (Dell'Antonia). However, it is not always the dress code that is sexist. Some dress codes, such as Churchill's, are written with gender equality in mind but the way the school's enforce them, make them sexist. A student will rarely see a fellow male peer getting pulled out of his learning environment and told to change because the teachers find that his outfit can be proven to be distracting to the learning environment. On the flipside, girls will be pulled out of the learning environment and forced to changed because their outfit or attire can "prove to be a distraction". The issue here is not that these dress codes are written with sexism in mind its that the way schools enforce them is sexist. A girl could be told her outfit is indecent for the school environment because it could be seen as a distraction to the male population of the school, possibly. Teachers will interpret what they see as inappropriate by what they experienced as a teen but the issue with that is that everyone has a different perceived world based on their past so dress codes get muddled and hard to understand in common agreeance, as does ... • 7. I 'm Considering Becoming A Sports Fan We come across many different cultures and fashion in our society. Some may indicate that the culture influences one's fashion while others may oppose and state that each aspect stands alone. Fashion and culture fall into the following identity categories: chosen and assigned. Culture affects many parts of an individual, in some cases you can determine an individual 's culture by their speech and clothing; in addition to traditions and the environment in which they were raised. Whereas fashion may be impacted by culture and tradition, but it may also not interact with culture at all. When it came to Arab culture there were many restrictions and less freedom with appearance and fashion. Even though the Arab culture may have many restrictions when it came to fashion it has been modernized. The Arab culture prohibits a few dress codes that may be considered norm in American culture. As an individual who grew up in an Arab culture household you have to adapt to the culture and rituals. Just as Andy Hinds mentioned in his article, I'm considering Becoming a Sports Fan How Do I Pick a Team? "In both of these exchanges, I had that old familiar feeling of not having a clue about something that was supposed to be important to me as an American male." It may also prohibit multiple actions that may be dealt and interpreted in other cultures in a different way. Arab culture is made up of hundreds of years old traditions. • 9. Mary Wollstonecraft Chapter 7 Summary In Chapter Seven, Wollstonecraft deeply discusses the idea of modesty and its overall meaning. She argues that modesty is different than humility and bashfulness, and that it is a virtue instead of a quality. She also discusses how modesty contributes to the idea of sexual pleasure, and how that differs from both men and women. In relation to women, she discusses that a modest woman is one that puts time into intellectual pursuits rather than sexual ones. She states "A woman who has dedicated much of her time to purely intellectual pursuits, and whose affections have been exercised by humane plans of usefulness, must as a natural consequence have more purity of mind than the ignorant beings whose time and thoughts have been occupied by gay ... • 11. Why Modesty Is Bad Biblical Modesty In society today, modesty no longer has a strong appeal to young women because it is not the "cool" thing to do. However, more and more people are starting to think that self– expression and individuality are more important than being modesty. The media portrays women as being "sexual objects" rather than being respectable human beings. Many popular women on TV, in movies, and in music videos are not only dressing in provocative ways, but they are also acting in inappropriate ways to get the attention of their male viewers. Although, many women might say that, the way that they dress does not affect the way that a man looks at them. The Bible tells us that modesty begins with the heart. A woman has to have the desire in her heart to want to be modest and show humility in the way that she carries herself. "This means modesty is not simply about what we wear, but how we act, how we communicate, and how relate to others" (6 Marks). In other words, modesty is more about showing decency by respecting oneself and others. The term itself means "regard to decency of behavior, speech, and dress" (Dictionary). ... "Modesty is the voluntary personal responsibility to behave [and] dress in such a manner as to not purposely draw attention to oneself, and to not think proudly of oneself..." (ModestFeminineAttire). Modesty does not always have to deal with what someone is wearing, however, it has more to do with what is beneath the clothing, the heart. The Bible talks about how Christian women should have the desire to dress in a respectable manner, so that they do not purposely draw the attention of a man. 1 Timothy 2:9 says, "... women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety." In this day and age, young women should be taught to "guard her mind, heart and body" ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. What Are The Arguments Against Student Dress Code Essay A person's attire identifies who they are. Clothing can show a person's economic status, ethnic background, or religion. While a student's fashion choice is usually seen as a mode of expression, it is more likely to be seen as a problem that requires a dress code to be enforced. For example, different and unknown clothing styles tend to evoke ridicule from students who perceive the attire as abnormal. Also, young women are judged incorrectly based on their clothing, and are more likely to be criticized for their clothing choice rather than boys. To prevent the issues of cultural and status– based discrimination, sexual harassment and violence, and gender bias, the enforcement of a dress code is necessary. The clothing that a student chooses to wear is not only a mode of expression, but also a way to instantly be classified by teenage ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "Dress identifies the wearer's community to other groups and communities, and may also reflect one's status"(Arthur). Stereotypically, if a student was wearing a preppy outfit, they would instantly be judged as someone who is reasonably wealthy. However, if one were to wear a worn out shirt, old jeans, and no accessories, they would be judged as someone who does not have a high economic status. In high school, students tend to discriminate against those who seem different to them. Someone with a lower economic status or different clothing style is more likely to be targeted by teenage bullies. If one dresses differently due to their religion or ethnic background, it is also seen as a reason for bullying. In the United States, many individuals are ignorant of other cultures, and when one dresses to represent their ethnic background, they are subject to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. The Importance Of Dress Codes In Society There has always been something up with the rights and roles women have in society. They receive objectification for almost everything they attempt and are told to fit into these roles that men aren't even asked to try. We are told and taught from a young age to act a certain way or receive certain consequences. We fear cat calls for trying to look good for our own confidence, and are shut down for trying to dress the way we want because of a "lack of modesty". The way women dress is highly criticized, and it doesn't only go for older women, but for younger girls as well. Regarding dress codes, although some see it as a means to keep "drama" down and students concentrated in class, most to all school dress codes limit a female's ability to express herself through her clothing. This is a matter that needs to be changed. Let's start with the basics, the dictionary definition of clothes are "the things that people wear to cover their bodies and that are usually made from cloth", and the parts of the body we "need" to cover are really just dictated by society. For example, men and women both have nipples, and yet women are told by the world that they need to hide their nipples while men can roam free without a shirt. Our human culture tells us that certain areas of a person's body, some parts more than others, need to be hidden. This programming in our heads is one of the roots of the conflict in school dress codes. Clothing is a way that many, especially those discovering ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Examples Of False Modesty Introduction: The topic selected by me is 'False Modesty'. I was interested in this topic because of the quote by Alan Bennett 'All modesty is false modesty; otherwise it wouldn't be modesty.' In order for a person to be modest, they must not claim that they had a big role to play in their success. In fact, they must acknowledge others contribution more than their own. When someone tries to give other people credits for their achievement, they do this with the idea of showing people that they are modest, which is false modesty. False Modesty: Instead of praising, some people tend to disparage themselves. This is known as false modesty. There are many reasons as to why people do that. One is that they want to hear back comments from friends ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... DuS talk about the use of the words 'we' and 'I' in order to show modesty and immodesty. According to them active speech is always more direct and forceful. So the use of language can help us learn more about false modesty. (DuS, 1959). In another research paper George Parsons Lathrop talks about modesty among the readers. He feels that the readers are at first free from immodesty. But after reading the novels, the idea of modesty and immodesty gets into them. They ability of the readers to judge if the actions of the character is modest comes only after they have read the novels. But then he also puts forth a question that if the readers are able to judge modesty and immodesty, this trait must be in them even before they read the book. Thus, it would not be right to say that it was the novel which affected their ability to judge modesty, false modesty or immodesty. (Lathrop, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This is why for July's act of kindness I performed an admirable act in order to possibly influence the others around me to do the same. This type of considerate act is what makes our world prosper through the bad and reminisce in the good by showing how people should treat one another. Since I am a counselor in training at a camp in Long Island, I am responsible for watching over a group of children that are between the ages of ten and twelve years old. • 21. Women Years Ago Vs. Women Today Women one hundred years ago VS women today Women one hundred years ago were drastically different than women today in many aspects of their lives. Soon after the turn of the 20th century, a surge in women's independence surfaced. This was largely due to the fact that women were urged by Rosie the Riveter and other propaganda to replace men in factory jobs to support the war effort and provide income for their families. Women's lifestyles changed from then on, including their hairstyles, clothing, and overall personalities. The culture surrounding women in the early 1900's, especially in terms of the way that they dressed, was drastically different than that surrounding women in today's society. The typical everyday clothes that women would wear in the 1900's were usually long dresses or clothes that covered most of their bodies. Between the years 1900–1909 there were two key trends, the La Belle Epoque and the Gibson Girl. They were very much alike, they both consisted of a corset to make the waist skinnier and the bosom and backside larger, but it remained modest to the standards of that period. Both of these styles were very high class and were custom for the wealthier people of the day, this is due to the dresses being made out of luxury fabrics and rhinestones. However, from 1910–1919, the styles began to change when women became tired of wearing the puffy dresses and tight corsets. They wanted something more comfortable, so they came out with three styles called ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 23. Cultural Differences In I Am Malala "The Taliban could take our pens and our books, but they could not stop our minds from thinking," (Malala). I read a non–fiction book called I am Malala by Malala Yousafzai. This book is an extraordinary story about the life of a girl who got shot for standing up for herself, and women's rights. I was amazed at all of the cultural difference there were, so I will be comparing our culture with theirs. The first thing that I had noticed was how the women were expected to dress. Secondly, I noticed that the role women play was very limiting in their culture. Even the food that they ate was very different! I also noticed that their religion and faith were a very large part of their culture. When I wake up in the morning I usually throw on a pair of leggings and a t–shirt and call it good for the rest of the day, but in Pakistan this is not the case, women are expected to wear burqa (this is a full body cloak that covers everything except your eyes) . In the United States women can wear whatever they want for the most part. The burqa is worn as part of their religion, it is supposed to mean modesty and privacy. This is defiantly not what I would wear in a hot, humid place. The men in their culture do not have a strict dress code like the women, they can pretty much wear whatever ... • 25. Dress Code Controversy Or Helpful The Dress Code; Helpful or Hurtful What you wear affects how people think of you. This is comparable to an advertisement for the lunch special. If what's uncovered is not on the menu, then keep it covered. The student dress code is an issue with much controversy. Some may say that it is all preposterous but in actuality the dress code is for the students benefit. Let's take a look into the current North Middle School standards. Students at NMS Must have clothes that cover undergarments, have a modest inseam, and pajamas and slippers are not allowed. They must also cover their back, cleavage, midriff, and bottom. Shoulder straps must be 1 inch thick, and no clothing referencing drugs, alcohol, weapons, tobacco, or any obscenity are allowed. As you will see, there many reason why the school dress code is correct. It helps kids focus, build good standards, and be ready for their future occupations. Swear words are the most vulgar offensive words out there. As for the pronography, it is an complete disgrace and disgust. Wearing unclothed men and women on one's bodily attire is utterly repulsive. These dress codes are specifically associated with that particular set of religious peoples. Muslims have a hijab dress code for women, the dress was introduced with the intention to cover the body so that they are not judged by their physical appearance. Hijab is the most critical image in Muslim world for speaking to ladies. It spares a women from being scrutinized, monitor them from insidiousness and secure their nobility and respect. They are looking to gain same outlook and same treatment which a women without hijab gain. The questionnaire helped us in analyzing the perception of local peoples regarding these trends and our question that whether this trend of fashionable hijab will help in changing this perception that Hijab is an object of oppression. Users provided a neutral response in this regard and mentioned that Hijab is not an object of oppression so this fashion trend is not making a big difference in this regard. • 29. Textual Codes Essay Possibly one of the most prevalent codes in daily living all across the world is how people dress. The cloth people choose to cover their bodies with on a day–to–day basis says a lot about the individual and about that society. It can serve as a clue to what that person believes morally, what part of the world they come from, and even a message they are trying to send. According to Daniel Chandler in his book Semiotics: The Basics, "Semioticians seek to identify codes and the tacit rules and constraints which underlie the production and interpretation of meaning within each code" (Chandler 2007: 148). Chandler goes on to discuss three different types of codes within his book consisting of social codes, textual codes, and interpretive codes. The variety of styles worn across various cultures reveals something about the social codes. The textual codes can be seen in how clothing is advertised, and what this means across the various cultures whether it serves to individualize some or unite others plays ... • 31. Dressing Modesty One of my core beliefs that has shaped who I am today has resulted from dressing modestly. Dressing modestly is important to me because so often in this present age, one's body is displayed as a mere object. Not only is modesty, chastity, and purity important in one's spiritual life, it is also crucial to society. One might ask why it is so imperative that modesty be discussed. Well, one constantly hears reports of rape, molesting, and how high the rate of pornography viewers is. Thus, how is one to destroy these horrible acts except by how one dresses. I am not saying that dressing modestly will completely obliterate sexual assault, but it will certainly cut down on how often it occurs. I have always dressed modestly ever since I was a young child, but it was not until I was fourteen years of age that I decided that I would begin to wear skirts rather than pants and shorts. What influenced this was when I began to perceive the rate of women and young girls being raped. I felt that as a young lady, it was my duty not to tempt young men to look at me as something other than a young lady with thoughts and opinions of my own; I did not want to be a distraction, but rather a helper and friend. As I grew older I began to realize how it was not only beneficial to others, but also to myself. I noticed that my self–worth began to rise as well as how I judged myself. Furthermore, I began to distinguish that I was beginning to be my own person. How did I experience this? Well, I was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 33. The Look, By Nancy Leigh Demoss Many women consider modesty to be an outdated principle founded on legalistic ideas and a promotion of chauvinism. Although this is the prevailing thought within society, it could not be farther from the truth. In "The Look," a book written by Nancy leigh Demoss, she explains the misconceptions people have about modesty and explains what it truly is: an intentional representation of Christ through every aspect of our lives. I have had a fairly decent view of modesty growing up, and I have always held it in high regards when it comes to clothing, yet I failed to realize that it is a matter of the heart and not just about the clothes that I wear. Demoss' book has provided me with a new understanding of modesty, as well as how to apply it. Through my reading, the most influential piece of information that I have learned is that God does care about a woman's modesty in the areas of dress, intent, and appearance. A Woman's Dress Before I explain the importance of why a woman should dress modestly, I believe that it is important to address why a woman should dress. In Genesis 3 we find the story of the fall of man: Adam and Eve sinned against God and broke the relationship between Him and them. When Adam and Eve broke their relationship with God it allowed for sin to enter the earth, which opened their eyes to their own nakedness. After realizing that they were exposed they sewed fig leaves together to make clothing, but it only covered their private parts, not their bodies. God ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Pros And Cons Of School Dress Codes Today, most states have laws that allow school boards to make dress code rules for students within their district to promote a safe, disciplined school environment, prevent interference with schoolwork and discipline, and to encourage uniformity of student dress("School Dress Codes.") . Dress codes are needed and is a good idea for students to follow that gives them structure and realistic views on how they should portray themselves in the world. In the end, the dress code is only set in place so students aren't strayed away from their learning. It may seem that the dress codes are targeted at young women, but it's set in place to benefit the whole as a group, and teach the young girls modesty. Although, what one person may find acceptable, another person might not. To prevent this situation as best as possible, most schools will set forth standards that are straight forward and what they think is reasonable for the majority. There have been some cases where students have felt that their first amendment has been taken away. For example, there was a case where a student wore a black armband to protest against the adoption of uniforms in school, and the federal judge who heard the case ordered that the student had the right to do so ( "Faqs."). When it comes down to it, there is a lot to consider when it's time to draw the line and where boundaries have been crossed. • 37. Religious Beliefs And The Role Of Dress In The Religious... Religious ideologies regarding dress are based on religious organizations individual dogmas, who believe that your outwardly appearance should reflect your inner beliefs. Similarly, adhering to a strict code of dress, that symbolizes its group's traditions and customs, also helps in controlling the body's sexuality. Hunt–Hurst and Miller–Spillman (2012) stated that being "well–dressed (modestly) is a religious duty and not a personal preference" (p. 266). Dress in a matter of speaking is an outwardly symbol of religious identification and showing ones connectedness to their religious organization. Arthur (n.d.) believes "a group identity is projected through dress because people use self–presentation and self–promotion to visually present identity that is congruent with their belief systems" (Religion and Dress, para. 1). Since each religious organization perceives the role of dress, as it pertains to the expression of identity, differently one must also understand the basis of said religious organizations beliefs in order to comprehend how their beliefs mirror the role of dress. Islam is a monotheistic faith, one that believes in a single God, emphasizes submission to God or Allah, as well as the group over the individual. The Qur'an, the literal word of God, lays out the role of dress and its meaning for both men and women (Hunt–Hurst & Miller–Spillman, 2012; Islam, 2017). • 39. Professionalism : Professionalism And Prejudice In Schools Professionalism or Prejudice Dress codes in schools have become a primary part of the education system and monitor what students are allowed to wear on a daily basis. These codes are set into place to maintain professionalism on school grounds and avoid distractions. The issue seems to be the standards at which girls are held to compared to boys. Schools have banned everything from yoga pants to collar bones and everything in between (Dress Code Sexism). Boys are still allowed to wear sport shorts that rise higher than the average skirt yet the skirt is banned. While maintaining professionalism may be the motive behind some dress restrictions, it is not consistent for both genders. Dress codes in schools are sexist, and apply to girls more so than they do boys. Girls being told to be less distracting, boys not having the same enforcements, and female objectification are all reasons as to why dress codes are sexist. From a young age girls are taught to cover up their bodies to avoid being distracting and to maintain professionalism. Emily Miller dismisses several of the excuses schools use to justify off the wall dress codes, in her article "Dress Code Sexism". A familiar saying heard when a girl asks why she should change is that it is distracting to boys and inhibits their learning. Miller states, "This concept is beyond belief. Because a female student's body might pose a distraction to a male student's education, her education is interrupted and put on hold until she ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Those are just a few examples pulled from Arcadia High School's dress code section in the student handbook that we are given every year. Many schools have a dress code, some wear uniforms and some allow students to wear virtually anything they want. Arcadia's dress code has made girls resort to wearing jeans in 95 degree weather, stop attempting to wear tank tops and other articles of clothing that have been written off as forbidden in the hallways and classrooms. A student last week wore a shirt that had a keyhole in the back just below the shoulder blades, and not once did a faculty member mention that it was "inappropriate", however, last school year a sophomore was asked to remove her headband. This was the only instance in which someone has asked to remove a headband, despite the dress code stating that they are not allowed, just like hoodies and other articles of clothing that involve something covering a student's head. While part of the problem may be the students with the mentality that it is not the clothing they are wearing that is the problem but the people who look at them sexually in the classroom, others do understand that we can all maintain modesty and still be allowed to wear shorts during the warmer months (Deciphering the Dress Code). Then in France they are more open to things such as nude beaches. Obviously there are boundaries like that one that shouldn't be ok. At the same time though we have to be aware of the culture that we are in and, how do you fit in to be apart. If you have to ask someone if what your wearing is ok then its probably not all that ok. • 59. School Dress Code Bias Essay Are School Dress Codes a Biased Policy? In schools all across the country, dress codes are used to dictate what students can and cannot wear. Some schools, especially private schools, even go as far as to use a school uniform. While school dress codes are meant to promote a focused learning environment, they have a tendency to enforce stricter guidelines on girls than boys. For example, in many schools, girls are not allowed to wear shorts or skirts that do not reach a certain length, tank tops, low–cut blouses, or leggings. In the rulebook, restrictions like these are given the explanation "for modesty purposes", however, there are no similar restrictions on boys' attire. Girls' attire is often chastised for being "inappropriate" or "distracting to the boys", but the opposite never seems to occur. This is why I believe school dress codes are a biased policy. Enforcement of the school dress code seems to be aimed almost exclusively at girls. At Tottenville High School in Staten Island, New York, over 200 detention slips were distributed to students for dress code violations within the first few days of the semester, when the heat was in its prime, with the recipients being around 90% female ("Schools Are Still Slut–Shaming Girls While Enforcing Dress Code"). What I've only just begun to realize is that these two extremes represent different sides of the same coin. While popular culture tends to disempower women by telling them they must dress to get men to look at them, the modesty culture tends to disempower women by telling them they must dress to keep men from looking at them.It is important here to make a distinction between attraction and lust. Attraction is a natural biological response to beauty; lust obsesses on that attraction until it grows into a sense of ownership, a drive to conquer and claim. When Jesus warns that "everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart," he uses the same word found in the Ten Commandments to refer to a person who "covets" his neighbor's property. Lust takes attraction and turns it into the coveting of a woman's body as though it were property. And men are responsible for their own thoughts and actions when this happens; they don't get to blame it on what a woman is wearing. Many discussions of modesty, from diverse cultural or religious perspectives, revolve around the idea of keeping sinful and unholy female bodies and body parts from the gaze of others – particularly men. This privileges the male gaze, in a backward sort of way, and puts females at a disadvantage for being the ones in control of what others think or feel when seeing their bodies. In today's society, the traditional roles, values, and thoughts placed upon women from prehistoric times still play a central part in the inequality women face every day. The day I no longer have to worry about what I'm wearing will label me as a "slut," is the day that women will be thought of as more than just sexual objects. The day I can be praised for my brains instead of my beauty, it the day men and women will be considered equal. This is the future I hope to foster. This is the future where the line "all men are created equal" means all humans and not just men. Since the start of the agricultural revolution, social structure has moved from egalitarian to patriarchal. Men were stronger, and thus more valuable to handle the labor of farming, while women were left to take care of the house and children. Even though in the past fifteen years society has made great leaps towards equality, society is still far from egalitarian. The oppressive traditional roles from the Neolithic era are still shoved down a woman's throat from an early age. The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints Essay When analyzing conflicting sources on specific topics, it is important to consider the background of the author to reveal his or her motivation behind writing the piece. When writing about cults, there are inside sources (current members) and outside sources that encompass everything from ex– members to the media. Jessica Longaker, a non–affiliate of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter–day Saints, posted a critique of the patriarchal influence on Mormonism and how it affects the role of women in the church. • 77. Meaning Of The Hijab In my second year in college, when I had finally settled in and people had a better understanding of me, I had numerous people come and tell me – "I did not know you were this liberal, friendly or open minded.", when I asked why that was, the reply always remained the same – "You wear a hijab, lead me to thinking you were religious." The conversations always closed with the same statement from me – "A piece of cloth on my head does not measure my devotion to my religion." In modern times, the hijab has become symbolic of one's religiousness, beyond just being an item of clothing that is embraced by women who follow the religion of Islam. The idea of a woman being religious as she is wearing the hijab is as valid as stating that a person is a good chef, since he is wearing the chef's hat.
