• After even a small attack, the
vehicle generally becomes a
mission loss

We want to improve mission survivability
• Why……
– loss of a vehicle reduces probability of a successful mission
• But also……
– another vehicle is required to carry the original occupants
– a low-loader is required to carry the vehicle
– another vehicle is required to manoeuvre the stricken vehicle
– recovery vehicles must be at least as ‘terrain-capable’
– troops are diverted from the military mission
– troops are required to protect the recovery
– more people are put at risk

• We want to start at ‘model scale’
• ‘Model scale’ is a useful start
• To identify
– robust mechanisms
– fragile mechanisms (so that we can discard them)
– innovative methods
– methods for rapid repair
– design methodology
• And ‘model scale’ can be full scale for a sensor platform

Challenge 1: robust components
Proposals for the identification and/or development of
sensors or components that are extremely robust against
blast and shock
• report - why you think it will work
• build - the component itself
• test - to be tested by Dstl
• report - why it worked (or not!)

Challenge 2: platform demonstrator
Proposals for a proof-of-concept demonstrator of a small,
very basic remote controlled sensor platform
• optimised against assault from a buried charge
• should weigh no more that 50kg
Deliverables:
• report - why you think it will work
• build – the platform itself
• test - does it work? (tested by us)
• report - why it worked (or not)

We are not interested in:
• development of autonomy
• development of Artificial Intelligence
• development of control algorithms
• flying platforms
• floating platforms
(of course, we are still interested in these – just not in this CDE
themed competition)

Exploitation
• Phase 1 of this competition has up to £500,000 to fund
novel, proof-of-concept proposals
• We plan to take forward the most successful outputs
from phase 1 to develop a very high survivability
platform at phase 2
• A budget of up to £500,000 is available for phase 2
funding
• Only proposals successful at phase 1 will be
considered for funding at phase 2

Competition detail
• Proposals typically between £20,000 to £80,000
• Projects 3 to 9 months in duration
• Work must complete and be ready for testing by
January 2016
• Include a descriptive scoping for a longer programme
of any length but ensure your proposal is clearly
partitioned
