Highly Educated Immigrants
I really enjoyed this question. It was very thought provoking. I see two sides to this equation. On
one side there would be less government dependency from immigrants if they were more educated.
However on the opposing side immigrants may be willing to work for less. This could result in a
more competitive job market and lower entry prices.
Benefits of more highly educated immigrant
I think that the process of selecting immigrants with higher education levels would have to start with
gaining better control of our borders. Gaining better control of our border security would allow us to
screen and select the individuals we permit into our control. I think that the screening process would
involve a test to gauge their academic level and any

Educated Women
Only educated women make educated decisions
Studies show countries with a highly educated women populace, women are deciding to hold off on
having a family. Studies also show that in places of high poverty, women have more children.
It's not a decision that helps improve the upward mobility of the family so much as it is a strategic
decision that occurs because of lack of contraception, options, it may even be a matter of survival
since these places have high child mortality rates more children equals one has the more hands
working and ultimately a better chance parents will be taken care of when they get older by their
child. It's procreation unplanned and procreation that holds women back.

I agree flawed policies exist, but it's because of policies like these, set by our government, that the
future of a child is no longer dictated by the marital status of a child's parents.
Arguments against forced fatherhood
Most definitely men have less reproductive autonomy than women because men do not carry the
child, are not ripped apart, giving birth to a child, do not have to suffer the experience of childbirth.
Men are aware of their sperm's potential and it all could have all been avoided
A man may feel as though he "accidentally impregnated a woman," however the moment he chooses
to enter the woman he understands the potential consequences that come with this choice. Therefore,
unless a man accidentally enters a woman without the intention of climaxing. a man does not
accidentally conceive a child.
Should one's chosen path, that leaves one with fewer options, be rewarded with deciding life choices
for others? Should a man take precedence over a woman in her life decision she wants to make
about her own future and body? Absolutely not! He can urge her to get can abortion, but ultimately
the decision is hers to make because it's her body and he gave up the option not to have a child when
he partook in the act which conceived the child. The man may end up with years of paying child–
support but the mother is stuck with society's

Doe Educated Women
Before I had read this essay I was under the assumption that Doe was entertaining the idea of
educating women for the sake of women.. and not for men. So that makes this a lot more enjoyable
for myself to write.
His argument was incredibly simple and selfish. He didn't believe women should be educated
because like men, their worthy of such a practice, or, like men, they deserve the advantages that
come with an education. He believed that if women were to become educated several behaviors
benefiting men would result. One behavior Doe consistently reiterated was that if a woman were to
become educated, she would apply to sex more often and willing. Women would also become more
rather less pleasant to be around. Suggesting they were unpleasant to be around in the first place and
perhaps only around in order to clean, cook, and submit to sex.
Doe also went as far to say and limit what women should be educated on. Their practices would be
considerably effeminate in nature, rather mathematical for example. Essentially, he wanted them to
be educated, but not how we would define an educated individual today. Doe listed ideal practices
for women like dance and music, as well as romantic languages. He also said women should learn to
read history books, not math or science books, but history! ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

That's one reason this argument wasn't anything to consider. Moreover, the argument in which an
educated women would result in a woman desiring to breed? I myself can't seem to think of how the
two would magically form some sort of correlation. If anything the last thing an educated women
would want to do is stay at home and hungrily await her husband to come home so the two can
"breed". Will learning to speak French and learning to dance suddenly make her realize how
deserving of sex her husband is? To answer the listed question, no this was a horrible

What Is An Educated Person?
I can picture being in Thomas Jones place and listening to a student wondering what the speaker is
saying, their interest is not listening to the speakers, but walking the stage and the end
commencement. As Thomas Jones pointed out; why did we not discuss the educated person question
prior to commencement? We do need to answer the question: "What is an educated person?" (Jones)
This story is so true! Had I questioned the rationale behind the requirements instead of relying on
the experts to plan my educational progress; I would be in a better place for furthering my
education. Instead of wondering why I was taking courses that just did not make sense; I could have
understood the standards and took responsibility for my undergraduate academic decisions.
I always believed that you do not need a college education to be an educated person. Through the
years, I have worked with recent college graduates. Questioning how some of these individuals
managed to graduate nor did I consider them an educated person. Though growth and the lifelong
process of learning; it provides a different outlook. Each individual is different and we should not
expect the same results from each person; do not be a judgmental person.
I wondered about the rationale regarding the history requirement and other course requirements.
One of my reflections were history is a part of each course and learning provides the course basics
from the beginning. The history course inspired me to learn more about the

Well-Educated Professional Women
One major reason why women are not reaching leadership positions is because of the relationship
inequalities that they have at home. Sandberg states, "In a 2007 study of well–educated professional
women who has left the paid workforce, 60 percent cited their husband as a critical factor in their
decision" (110). This is a perfect example of how much of an impact men really have on women.
Whatever a man does at home, whether he notices is it or not, has a huge impact on a women at
work. Sandberg goes on to explain that, "These women specifically listed their husbands' lack of
participation in child care and other domestic tasks and the expectation that wives should be the
ones to cut back on employment as reasons for quitting" (110). This is

A Not So Educated Prosperous Society
A not so Educated Prosperous Society
A society built on the foundation of well–educated citizens will prosper and potentially eliminate
corruption. Well–educated citizens make important contributions to business innovation,
productivity, and national economic performance. (The Conference Board of Canada, 2015). Such
citizens tend to make sound decisions that affect their quality of life and earn higher incomes,
leading to a lifestyle of prosperity with social security and higher quality of health. Citizens actively
contribute to the overall development and growth of the society.
The reality in Canada is that about 25% of Canadians aged 25–65 have a university degree and will

This constraint restricts their quality of life and contribution to society.
Since we are in the business of profiting off of the debt of the next wave of contributors, why not
profit from the indebted and their skills? The reality is that students have no realistic horizon and
they might as well not live in the present. I believe that a debt must be repaid whether it is in the
same or different units of measure. If the student does not have the finances to repay their debt, then
it is best that their life and knowledge is no longer their own and controlled by the institutions and
governments indebted to until the loan's conditions have been fulfilled. These institutions can very
well farm the knowledge gained by the student and grow the economy without having to worry
about salaries, further reducing the cost of research and development that will then lower the
baseline of corporations and institutions.
I understand that this may be a mouthful to comprehend, but I assure you that it will work similarly
to owing a mortgage on a house and declaring bankruptcy. In this scenario, the financial institution
claims ownership of the house and the residents are kicked out, as they are unable to meet regular
mortgage payments. As for the students, the loans were used to gain knowledge and methodologies
from post–secondary programs. This information gained is now under the

Being Educated Research Paper
Who is educated and who is not? In today's world education rules, unlike a few decades ago people
could have a career without having a high school diploma, college degree, or some type of
certification. Today's society and jobs are ruled by the high and middle class, which are mostly
likely highly well educated people. While the lower class are at the bottom of the barrel. Most likely
due to the lack of education. But when it comes down to the topic of who is educated and who is not
it can go both ways. Cause no one person is really more educated than the next.
There are only two type of people in this world, people who have book smarts and people who have

with no degree who has been working in construction for five or more years who is being paid to

educated the designer or the worker? Now im sure you don't know. Cause now you see both are
educated and they both possess knowledge about construction but from two different aspects. Now
see if the construction worker and the drafting desing artist switch place's, then they would have a
well rounded education of the career instead of a piece. Can they do eachother's job? Yes! If the
worker goes back to school and receive a degree on drafting design. Then the worker can go in to
business and contarct his self out because he knows how to design and construct. And if the desiner

Northrop Frye's The Educated Imagination
In Northrop Frye's The Educated Imagination, Frye elaborates how essential it is for man to educate
his imagination. The main purpose of educating the imagination is to confront man with nature,
generate a feeling of freedom, and imagination forms the basis of every human's social life In able
for man relate to the world he lives in, he must have a considerable knowledge of what it is.
Through literature, we learn to distinguish the objective world, where in we struggle to belong, from
the human world, which is an artifact of our desires. "The world you want to live in is the human
world, not an objective one: it's not an environment but a home; it's not the world you see but the
world you build out of what you see" (5). We soon realize that the world we want to live in is an
ideal world, a world that will suit our wants and needs. Therefore, we can ... Show more content on

Man's yearning to live in a human world is evidently perceived in literature using figurative
language. In his first talk, Frye states how vital figurative language is to our conception of our
world. "Literature belongs to the world man constructs, not to the world he sees" (12). We realize
that literature is not something we think but rather a product of how we think, a result of our
imagination. We see ourselves react to nature, turning the objective world into human so we can
relate to it. The imagination forms the basis of the social life of every human. According to Northrop
Frye, humans have feelings that "can't be directly conveyed by words" (82) and intelligence that
people "almost never get a chance to use by itself." (82) Emotions and intelligence form a basic
component of human nature. However, when the two are combined a resultant imagination is

Educated Women: Video Analysis
A lot stood out to me from each clip. Beginning with the first one, the video really demonstrated
how women are suppose to just be pretty and silent. We are not supposed to have opinions and it
really kind of made me mad that the video joked about how educated women are ugly. I think that
this is almost because guys feel intimidated by educated women. The next one on PMS was kind of
funny but also kind of ridiculous. It was also very gender norm in the way that the man was of
course watching sports. I think it would be kind of a cool idea though for guys to keep track of when
their significant other is on their period or PMSing. That is just being an active partner in my
opinion. I also really think that guys should be more educated and aware of the female body and
what we are actually going through because it is kind of terrible. ... Show more content on

Imagine two black boys growing up in America, one comes from a family that is less than fortunate.
Every meal he eats, his family scrounges for. Every gift that he receives is a blessing because he

he sees around him is gang life, a poor economy, and poorly educated neighbors. The other boy
comes from a family that is fortunate enough to be able to provide any and everything for him. He is

you, but it hearts my soul to see another black man get his life thrown away...regardless of the

regardless of your background you can succeed and not throw away your life. Additionally, I will do

An Educated Success Theodore Roosevelt once said, "A man who has never gone to school may
steal from a freight car; but if he has a university education, he may steal the whole railroad."
Abraham Lincoln, Albert Einstein, among many other well educated people, all had a higher
education that led them all to be successful. Education in America was founded in the early
nineteenth century, thanks in part to Thomas Jefferson. Despite political and religious views, an
education system was put into place after the Declaration of Independence was signed. Many of the
students that attended school were primarily wealthy, however, ¬¬¬ by 1918, going to a public

In an article from the New York Times called "Is College worth it? Clearly, New Data Say" by
David Leonhardt, the author states "not so many decades ago, high school was considered the
frontier of education. Some people even argued that it was a waste to encourage Americans from
humble background to spend four years of life attending high school. Today obviously, the notion
that everyone should attend 13 years of school is indisputable" (Leonhardt 4). It was believed that
the brain did not grow new cells and that it had limitations. However, those assumptions were
incorrect. Current research has shown that the brain grows new nerve cells daily and that the process
is sped when students are actively learning. In the article "Brainology," by Carol S. Dweck, the
author presents research that shows that students that believed their intelligence was something they
could develop and increase (growth mindset), had positive attitudes. This in turn allowed them to
see education differently from those with a fixed mindset. Students believed that their ability could
be increased and that despite hard work and errors, learning was achievable. They were not afraid to
fail, because they would rise back up and continue to develop their learning ambience and expand
their knowledge at the same time. People with these morals are those that are successful at what they

What Does It Mean At Be Educated?
Choices can make or break us depending on what we do. That is what Jon Spayde attempts to
convey to his audience in his 1998 Unte Reader article, "What Does it Mean to Be Educated?" He
goes through many examples and arguments that could possible answer this "surprisingly tricky and
two–sided question" (Spayde paragraph 1). Although the actual arguments he poses throughout his
article, he uses the rhetorical devices – ethos, pathos and logos, to get his readers to accept his
purpose. First, Spayde uses pathos to reach to his audience. The most important technique he uses is
his delayed thesis: "To fall short of you highest goals...is okay as long as you stuck to the struggle.
And the joy" (Spayde paragraph 21). Unlike most articles where the thesis is somewhere near the
beginning of the text, he strategically places his as the last sentence. Even though he may have had a
reason placing it at the mere end, one may argue that the placement is wrong. After reading the
entire article and coming to that as a conclusion, the article finally becomes clear. He may have had
a doubt that not everyone would understand and accept his point of view, that proving himself was
his largest concern. Spayde didn't entrust just his delayed thesis to assist in proving his argument; he
included analogies. In paragraph 7, he spoke about the differences between a college dropout
earning less money and a high school dropout earning more. This example was used to persuade his
audience that those

As people around the world progress more and more they begin to question the capability and

credentials, has been asked for years but what makes them what they are in the new twenty–first
century. There are many things that can make or break whether people believe them to be capable of
the job that they hold onto at that moment and this sort of opinion can change as quickly as night

To answer this in blunt honesty, there is no one person or group of people who determine the

people who deem this person not to be qualified to be classified as an educated leader because they

Conception Of An Educated Person
Most individuals consider an educated person to be a professor, lawyer, doctor, or anyone who has
completed at least four years at a university. I, however, consider an educated person to be anyone
who holds a piece of knowledge that can be obtained through one's day–to–day life. One is not
required to attend an institution of higher learning to be considered an educated person, nor is it
necessary that he or she earns a degree, or even a diploma. Despite many individuals believing that a
traditional education must be received in order to be considered an "educated" person, there are
multiple routes that one can choose; therefore, one is not defined by the amount of schooling that he
or she has obtained. Although an individual may be considered "educated", he or she does not
necessarily possess greater knowledge than a carpenter or a real estate broker. In fact, individuals
who attend a four–year university are usually only "educated" in a particular field. Therefore,
someone without a college degree has the ability to be just as knowledgeable in a different field. ...

What It Means To Be Educated
Essay There are those who say that the goal of education is to avoid boredom, but they are only
partly correct. Avoiding boredom, like the many other goals of education, is only a secondary goal.
The primary goal is to succeed at the many aspects of life. Education is a process of becoming a
more capable person than before the learning process began. It allows a person to get a job, have
interests, and to improve society. One of the most important reasons to get educated is to get a job.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate for people with a doctoral
degree is only 2.1%, while the unemployment rate for people with a high school diploma is 9.0%.
Also, people with a doctoral degree earn an average of $1,591 weekly, but people with a high school
diploma earn only $668 per week. As the statistics show, an educated person is much more likely to
earn a living wage and live a comfortable life than an uneducated person. Education gives people
the ability to not only earn enough money, but to make the right choices as well. Being educated
develops the brain in a certain way which allows people to look in different perspectives and decide
on which perspective is correct. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Educated Imagination
Study Guide for The Educated Imagination Northrop Frye (1912–1991) read his Massey Lectures
over the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC radio) in 1962. First published by Indiana
University Press in 1964, the six lectures present key concepts from Frye's Anatomy of Criticism:
Four Essays (Princeton University Press, 1957). Chapter One. "The Motive for Metaphor." Frye
begins by exploring the relation of language and literature. "What is the relation of English as the
mother tongue to English as a literature?" he asks (p. 16), and before he can give an answer, he has
to explain why people use words. He identifies three different uses of language, which he also terms
types or levels of language. 1. "The language of consciousness or ... Show more content on

63). From this point, he concludes that literature is concerned with symbolic action, that literary or
mythological characters are typical, and that the world of poet imagery is "totally symbolic" (p. 75).
He then moves to the principle of "literature as a whole" (p. 49): "you don't just read one poem or
novel after another, but enter into a complete world of which every work of literature forms a part"
(p. 69). Hence there is a progressive element in the study and teaching of literature: as we read more
works, we become able to generalize from our experience of literature. Frye can now anticipate the
social function of literature, to be discussed in chapter 6. "What is the use of studying the
imagination?" he asks (p. 77). He values literature, first, because of "its encouragement of tolerance"
(p. 77), produced by "the power of detachment in the imagination" (p. 78). Once a person like Mark
Anthony or Cleopatra becomes a literary character (like the heroes of Shakespeare's tragedy) we
think of them differently. Indeed, literature tends to swallow life. "And the imagination won't stop
until it's swallowed everything" (p. 80). Chapter Four: "The Keys to Dreamland" Frye now deals
with the respective claims of the reader and writer, the producer and consumer of literature. "We
need two powers in literature," he says, "a power to create and a power to understand" (p. 104). Both
writer and reader need to understand literary convention. For a writer, it is not enough to

characteristics of an educated person were compared, contrasted, and condensed to focus on the two

guidelines such as frameworks, curriculums, hopefully to help students gain a well balanced

question when thinking about education is who is qualified to facilitate the teaching? It would make
sense that an educated person should be the one to impart knowledge to others, because they are

Why Be An Educated Person Essay
Why be an educated person?
The term 'education' can mean many things. An education is the collective knowledge a person has,
but what does an education mean? Although an education can be paid for, no one can physically
give you an education, so it is not a gift. There are societal situations where an education is a
necessity, but not many globally. Education is a tool to be utilized differently in every part of the
world. Knowledge is power, but some knowledge is more powerful depending on your region. If
you are part a primitive tribe in New Guinea, a person that is considered to be educated may be
illiterate. Whereas in America, an illiterate person would have trouble functioning at all in society.

This situation exemplifies the problems that one can face when an education is desired but outside
scarcities disallow.
There are some circumstances where special educational aspects are a necessity in a certain region,
but education is not global. In most developed countries a lawyer would be considered an educated
person, but if a lawyer was sent to a more primitive society he would be lost. A farmer educated in
cultivation in Nebraska could nourish himself indefinitely, but take away his farm and he has
nothing but the knowledge of farming. There are certain things that a person must know in order to
have the power to survive in a chosen society. These things change with regards to the society at
hand. In more developed places it is pertinent that you know how to read. Without this skill a person
will remained severely uninformed, disconnected, and uneducated. The ability to read is the
stepping stone to self–education. A literate person with motivation and knowledge of construction
can become successful with very little institutionalized education. This skill, as it applies to
American social culture, is the most important attribute of an education. Without the ability to read,
a person would have to either settle for an extremely unskilled job, grow their own food, or resort to
thievery. In a accomplished society such as

The Educated Imagination Character Analysis
Excerpt of Critical Theory
From reading the excerpt, "The Educated Imagination," by Northrop Frye, the author discusses the
patterns that repeat themselves throughout the history of literature, such as the theory of mythology,
which refers to the Hero's Journey(The Monomyth). In my ISU novel, "Son of a Trickster," by Eden
Robinson, she applies the theory of mythology from the excerpt as a template or pattern of how the
literature of her novel is written. In Frye's excerpt, he suggests how "young gods or heroes who go
through various adventures and then are deserted or betrayed and killed, and then come back to life

spells, and you wouldn't listen. You kept telling me why Percy was the best train"(pg. 245). Jared's
younger mentality resulted for his ignorance and his apathy for magic and his family which lead him
to cross the threshold into the unknown. Before crossing the threshold, supernatural aid from the
Hero's Journey is shown when Jared encounters a raven, who assists him through his adolescence. In
between the first and second threshold, Robinson uses Belly of the Whale from the Hero's Journey
when Jared starts hallucinating and visualizing things from the unknown world and Jared
experiences The Meeting with the Goddess and Woman as Temptress when she meets Sarah, a being
connected to the unknown world. Next, Frye's excerpt states that the heroes "then are deserted or
betrayed and killed" which represents the middle of the threshold. This is the part of the Hero's
Journey where the heroes either stay at the bottom, dead or emotionally unstable, or passes

Are We Considered Educated?
Are we considered "Educated" in America?
The United States of America–the greatest country in the world. Or is it? This idea that
America is the highest leading power in the world has brainwashed upcoming adults and shown
them the wrong mentality which they have developed overtime. A main controversy in America is
Education. If America says they are great, why is it that the country is not even ranked in the top ten
countries for education? An adversary of this claim would say that, "Education doesn't determine the
Extent of America's power", which is completely true, but the fact of the matter is, education is the
key to power.
When a person is intelligent, others trust that person to make the right decision. People who are
more knowledgeable about a subject, get put in charge to lead others. It is erroneous to think
otherwise. The question many should now ask, is "What makes
American Education different to the education in other countries?". There is a separation between
these systems through techniques in teaching, mandatory testing, social affairs, and expectations.
In order to produce well–educated people, there must be a scholarly educator who spends time to
teach the future generation, or in short–terms a teacher. Teachers are the building blocks of
education. It is their job to produce leaders in the country to come. The sad part about this is, they
are not respected as much as high up officials or doctors, even those they were the cause of their
high achievements.

The Educated Imagination Analysis
Imagination. The force behind our direction in life, the fuel for what we hope to achieve, and the
inspiration to follow a unique path. However, often unnoticed within our society, imagination also
provides the framework necessary to avoid conforming to evil advertisements and political schemes.
As Frye teaches through his lecture series, The Educated Imagination, literary training is of utmost
importance in developing imagination, fostering of a progressive "social vision." Literary training
can make the difference between being able to openly expressing values while working towards an
ideal future, and being trapped behind the laws of an oppressive political regime such as
communism, starved of imagination and in a state of belief that what ... Show more content on

Although this mentality works in a democratic society in which social views are expressed without
difficulty, in a communist society, conforming to these myths means accepting a sub–par quality of
life. With the power of the imagination through literature, social visions should aim higher, seeking
to find a better life outside of present society. As declared by Frye, "The world of literature is a
world where there is no reality except that of the human imagination." (Frye, 57). This "world of
literature" is similar to a social vision as both limits are dependent only upon belief. In the case of
the USSR, the issue was due to the oppressive nature of the government, the literary training
required for belief in a better future had not developed among citizens. Instead, it took the
imaginative mind of a single man, Mikhail Gorbachev, and his social vision to achieve political
openness. The social vision of a single individual inspired critical thought in the general public.
Suddenly, looking back and understanding the oppression which occurred, a revolution began across
Eastern Europe until the collapse of the USSR in 1991 (History.com Staff, 2011). A feat which

Becoming An Educated Person Analysis
To become an educated person, it takes time. Being educated has a lot to do with knowing how to
present yourself, and how to talk to people. It is also great to know how to hold an educated
conversation. Many people can be educated or become educated simply by studying or
understanding at least one core subject. Anyone that is able to think clearly and manage emotions
internally. Also a person who can be a great problem solver.
To be "educated" you must have self–awareness, knowing where you stand in society. Do you?

Aristotle's Argument Of An Educated Mind
Philosophy is the study of the fundamental nature of knowledge, reality, and existence. A great
philosopher named Aristotle came up with some big ideas that still ring true today. He believed that
we should think about things before we discredit them, but we should also think deeper than their
appearance.
Aristotle understood the fact that even though we may not agree, it doesn't hurt to at least we ponder
a presented idea for a while. This is shown through one of his quotes "It is the mark of an educated
mind to entertain a thought without accepting it." He was able to think about something he didn't
believe in and ponder it's legitimacy: people even today sometimes throw out ideas without so much
as a second glance. He shows again

On Becoming Educated By Jay Castro
In her essay "On Becoming Educated" Jay Castro discusses her first experience and with, thoughts
on, feminism. She continues to contribute feminism throughout her essay as she talks about her life
during school and during her teaching years. As I read this I can relate to some of the events she
talks about but I also came to disagree with some parts.
First off, feminism is a diverse collection of social, political, legal and economic right for women
equal of those of men such as equal pay. In the essay "On Becoming Educated", Castro explains
how she was introduced to feminism and how she was dedicated to it. Her professor was a feminist
writer working on an article about Violence Against Woman Act. In 1994, Violence Against Woman
Act ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In this quote, Castro highlights the main point she is trying to get through. The student that
surrounds her and the teacher that assigned this book but later regretted, are focusing on how angry
she was rather than focusing on the problems that she describes in the book. They are unable to
relate due to the fact that they didn't have to go through what Anzaldua or Castro had to go through.
After earning a doctorate, Castro was hired by a small men's college in rural Indiana to teach
feminism theory and women 's literature to thirty–five men. She was prepared and ready for the
disagreements, the drop outs and the failures that couldn't open up their minds on feminism. But she
values those voices, the questions and hostility because "they taught me how to make feminism 's
insights relevant to people outside a closed, snug room of agreement" (Castro, 98). She had learned
how to create feminism theory, critical race theory and observation about class privilege relevant,
exciting and even needful to people who had no material reason to care. She learned diplomacy.
What I liked about Castro is her visual on academic. She 's the teacher and she is met with students
ready to learn. But it 's not the way teachers teach or what the subject they are learning that affects
the way a student does in class but how they are treated. A student shouldn 't be ashamed or shunned
by either educators or classmates by how much they

Divorce: Less Educated Families
The prestige of a family, or lack thereof, may have an impact on the likelihood, or unlikelihood, of
couples' dissolution (Stockdale, 2011). Poverty–stricken families, and consequently, less educated
families are more likely to experience marital dissolution, according to the Census Bureau (2011).
Among others, employment status, receipt of non–cash assistance, and family status play an
important role in the likelihood of divorce (Stockdale, 2011). Wealthier families are more likely to
sustain marriage because of the higher social class (Rosow & Rose, 1972). That being said, those in
the medical field are exposed to a different set of career–related stressors which ultimately become
blended within the homelife (Rosow & Rose, 1972). Some of those major stressors are the late–
night work shifts, the longer hours, the on–call schedules, and the natural frustration and pressure of
work procedures (Rosow & Rose, 1972). These types of careers add on more stress to the
relationship than the general day–to–day concerns most couples face (Rosow & Rose, 1972).
According to L'Hommedieu (1984), internal concerns and emotions, financial stress, single–
parenting, and re–socializing will heavily influence the vast majority of the divorced population. He
also mentions that there are four pre–divorce conditions: the individual's ... Show more content on

crime. The treatment of criminals is a very big issue in today 's society. Most Americans will

Fordyke. One of the things Fordyke stated in the book was "In human societies priestly groups

reviewers who decide what the rest will be allowed to read and whose research will be funded. This

dominance. Although not everyone is a dominant personality. When you believe that you have
power you feel that other people are beneath you. Reading Fordye book reminded me of Herbert
Spencer's survival of the fittest theory. In this theory of natural selection, individuals in a population
who are well–adapted to a particular set of environmental conditions have an advantage over those
who are not so well adapted. The advantage comes in the form of survival and reproductive success.
"For example, those individuals who are better able to find and use a food resource will, on average,
live longer and produce more offspring than those who are less successful at finding food. Inherited
traits that increase individuals ' fitness are then passed to their offspring, thus giving the offspring
the same advantages" from PBS writers. Both of these Fordye and Spencer theories are relate to my

What Does it Mean to Be Educated?
Alfie Kohn on education: What does it mean to be educated?
According to Alfie Kohn's essay "The dangerous myth of grade inflation," one of the most
commonly–cited truisms in education today is that higher education is 'easier' than it was in the past.
Critics contend that grades have become puffed up while student performance has actually
weakened. Kohn believes this is a culturally–produced myth rather than a statistically justified
reality. In fact, the notion that grades were less generously bestowed to students is a durable
cliché which extends back to the 19th century, and is not merely relegated to our own era. Today,
the perpetrators cited as the worst offenders are liberal professors from the 1960s who have lapped
up a generally permissive attitude from that era. But "a report released just this year by the National
Center for Education Statistics revealed that fully 33.5 percent of American undergraduates had a
grade–point average of C or below in 1999–2000" (Kohn 2002: B7). Kohn sees the anxieties about
grade inflation as indicative of a larger cultural anxiety of what it means to be an educated person,
and believes that a fixation on grades is a fundamentally misguided way to improve the American
educational system.
Furthermore, even when grades are higher, this does not necessarily mean that student performance
is worse: admission to college, for example, is more competitive than ever before, which may be
prompting students to turn in higher–caliber work.

Skills Of A Well Educated Person
Skills of a Well–Educated Person
Even though a well–educated person is thought of as one who has extensive college education and
attend the finest schools, a well–educated person can also be one who is educated with hands–on
experience without a college degree.
When referring to a person as well–educated it usually has to do more with formal education than
informal education. When someone is describing a person as well–educated, consideration for both
formal and informal types of education should be included. Formal education is very important in
the early years since children have yet to acquire the necessary fundamental skills. Informal
education is very important as well; however, it is learning on a different level. Various studies
conducted over the years have shown that informal learning helps solidify the information learned in
mind. According to Psychologist, David Kolb, his Experiential Learning Theory takes a more
holistic approach and emphasizes how experiences, including cognitions, environmental factors, and
emotions, influence the learning process (Smith, M. K. 2001, 2010). A study performed in 2009 by
Purdue University demonstrated that being an active participant assisted in retaining information.
This study was mentioned in an article titled "Hands–On Learning vs. Lecturing" by Katie Ash. It
was discovered that when students who actually did hands on work, understood on a deeper level
than the students who had lecture–based lessons alone (Ash,

What Does It Mean To Be Educated
Do you know what it means to be educated? Is it earning a degree in a certain field? Or is being
educated is just the knowledge you gained through schooling? Many people have different answers
to this question. I think to be educated is to have the willingness to learn from others, to be an avid
reader and interact with texts, as well as being independent and having the motivation to improve.
What it means being educated is someone who has critical thinking skills, and the willingness to
learn. Northrop Frye was a Canadian literary critic, and one of Canada's most distinguished scholars,
and a Literary theorist, he wrote many works such as "Fearful Symmetry" and "Don't You Think it's

Russell Baker was an American writer, columnist for the New York Times, and hosted the PBS show

cannot truly become educated unless you read and slowly learn what is happening around the word,
or having interaction with a book such as George Orwell's 1984. While we did have schooling,
whether its public or private, and paved our way towards education, they didn't teach us as much as
they should. Another text from Baker's article "They have been happily telling testers what they
want to hear for twelve years." (Pg. 1, Paragraph 10) Meaning that the children haven't actually
learned anything nor is properly educated, they are just telling what the teachers and professors want
to hear. Twelve years, from kindergarten till senior year, all we've been telling them the materials

Educated Guess Essay
Why is "educated guess" a poor definition for hypothesis? An "educated guess" is a poor definition
for hypothesis because it is what you think of a certain topic based on little or no evidence. The real
meaning of hypothesis is an explanation formed through observation not just an assumption. What's
the difference between a hypothesis and a prediction? The difference between a hypothesis and
prediction is that a hypothesis is an explanation to a question or problem in nature, while predictions
are guesses of what could happen. Why should you avoid using the "If–Then" style for a
hypothesis? The "If–Then" style for a hypothesis is not helpful and should be avoided because it

The Definition of an Educated Person
Our team likes this definition of an educated person. We understand that if you go to school, you
will learn a subject well. But we also understand that many of us will see career paths that are not
traditional, or linear in nature. We will work in fields that are not what we studied. If all we learned
was basic skills and knowledge, we would cease to be educated the minute we stepped away from
our chosen field of study. What the Michigan State University is trying to say is that education is
more than just learning a few things to get a degree. Education being an educated person really does
mean being able to continuously learn. To have knowledge and to know how to use it are both
components of being educated.
We feel, therefore, that the definition of an educated person put forth by Michigan State University
is very accurate. The statement is succinct, so that we might not want to add anything to the
definition. It implies that the process of becoming an educated person is something that will deliver
a lifetime of value, rather than simply a skill that can be used to get a job. This lifetime value is one
of the reasons why an education usually pays for itself manifold down the road, as students who
become educated people are more adaptable, more successful and better able to succeed when
placed in difficult situations. Adversity is not discussed in the definition, but is definitely something
that could be mentioned in a discussion of what it means to be an educated

Should The Educated And Not Be Educated? Essay
To Be or Not To Be Educated? Aristotle once said, "The educated differ from the uneducated as
much as the living from the dead." Throughout the course of human existence, education has always
triumphed. But what is Education? It is derived from the Latin word "educatio", which means to
bring up. Could life be prosperous and gratifying without "education"? To be educated is defined
differently by different individuals. I define education as a field of study, the result produced from
teaching, training, or learning, and the act or process of acquiring general knowledge, then
developing the powers of reasoning and judgement from oneself or others intellectually for mature
life, If it was not for education being a field of study, there would not be teachers. As a toddler,
specifically kindergarten age, I was asked "What do you want to be when you grow up?" I replied
enthusiastically saying, "A teacher of course." At that age, subliminally, I knew I had to go to school
and receive a degree in teaching in order to do so. It was not until I became an adult, I learned that in
order to be an instructor of knowledge, I would have to major in Education rather than teaching as I
previously believed. One would think after soaking in education for 12 plus years, that our
knowledge of it is profound. There is more to education than what is viewed by a fledgling learning
eye. One has to grasp essential techniques, diverse training and even reiterated on basic information

What Makes a Child Well Educated?
In the article by A. Kohn What does it mean to be well educated? (2003). Kohn begins with talking
about his incredibly intelligent wife who is a physician, but when is comes to grammar and
punctuation she fails miserably. He asked the question "What does it mean to be well educated?"
(Kohn, 2003) Is it to be able to take a test well? Or be able to show what you know in a hands on
way that makes you well educated. He then digresses into the Common Core State Standards that
have been adopted by almost every state, and he asks if this is the right approach to judge being well

and the means to do so. In my ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In my own experience, I have seen children perform very well when given flash cards to learn their
math. In both ways the children are being tested, but with flash cards there is a more relaxed and fun
atmosphere which takes the pressure off of the children. While Mr. Kohn (2003) does not
specifically address paper tests he does mention passing tests to reach a prescribed goal. In addition
to paper tests, oral tests are another great way for children to showcase their abilities. Mr. Kohn
states (2003), "In about half the states, people sitting atop Mount Olympus have decreed that anyone
who doesn't pass a certain standardized test will be denied a diploma and, by implication, classified
as inadequately educated" (p.27). For those students who have trouble taking tests, oral exams are a
great way to see what a child has learned and a good life skill. For example, my husband is not
much of a public speaker, but through the Navy that has changed over the years. We need to test our
children on their public speaking without calling it a test, it is more like a life skill that is needed.
Standardize testing does not give us that opportunity if all they need to do is fill in a bubble on a
test. We need to give children a chance to show us how they shine best if we are to truly see how

To be or not to be well–educated: A Narrative Response to Alfie Kohn's "What does it mean to be

Alfie Kohn's essay "What does it mean to be well–educated?" begins on a personal note using his

Nevertheless, something is imbibed. Education in a good school does seem to show in the kind of
person you become and whether anything is remembered or not the molding influence is indelible.
Secondly good education when put to use is much handier when compared to a lower grade of
education. Kohn's question of consensus set me rapidly agreeing with him. Levels of education do
vary between countries, states, and even the past and present. What is well–educated in one country
may not be up to standard in another (2003, par. 9). Today a person with a doctorate in India is well–
respected and highly valued in his/her country but when the same person wishes to teach in America
or Britain he/she must acquire a teaching certification as most of the time local credentials are not
accepted.
The next stage of Kohn's reasoning involved ruling out what might not be considered as being well–
educated. Being well–educated does not depend on the number of hours spent in class, how well–
prepared for a career one is, test–scores, or rote–learning (2003, pars. 12–15). Although intelligent
students do get good test scores this does not happen all of the time as there are several smart
students who do not seem to perform well. Also, and in this as in the previous point I completely
agree with Kohn, memorizing everything that is just a click away on the internet does not
necessarily translate into being considered well–educated.

undocumented children should be educated is because they are now part of our society. And either

The Importance Of Being An Educated Person
"School provides a place for mental, physical, and ethical development. Character is taught and
learned in many settings: in the classroom, in the hallways, in the lunchroom, and on the sports
field" As, Diane Ravitch stated in her essay "The Essentials Of A Good Education". So, now I
wonder what does it mean to be an educated person. Well, today I am going to give you an
explanation of what it means to be an educated person in my own opinion. I will also be narrating
one particular experience from my own life which lead me to the conclusion of this term. My
experience is in reference to my job; which has made me expand my knowledge. Further–more this
made me the educated individual I am today. (Ravitch 111,112).
In my early adolescence I considered education being just solely a term referring to public high
school and college classes. I was taught in order to have a good future I had to graduate from both
and land a good paying job. So, due to this expectation of graduating from college; I always would
and look up to people with a degree. I classified anyone else with out a degree into a category who
was beneath someone who had a college education. This speculation that any–one with out a degree
was stupid was later proved wrong. After, I had a first hand experience I was able to understand the
importance of real life situations. The interesting thing about my development as an individual; I am
constantly able to learn new skills as long as I have an open mind. This leads

Sitting in a classroom for a certain number of hours does not make one well–educated (Kohn).
Throughout the school day of an average high school for example how much time do you actual
spend learning? An average school day is around seven hours with about nine periods dividing up
the day. If each period is around forty minutes with five minutes to get to your classes you spend
almost an hour in between periods getting from one class to another throughout the course of a day.
You have about forty minutes for lunch, a study hall or sometimes two and some kind of elective
like gym or art. That's not much time left for actually learning anything useful. When I was in
middle school I remember my teachers wasting almost half of the period explaining in detail what
we would be doing for the day instead of actually doing it. If the time you spent at school measures

Highly Educated Immigrants

  • 1. Highly Educated Immigrants I really enjoyed this question. It was very thought provoking. I see two sides to this equation. On one side there would be less government dependency from immigrants if they were more educated. However on the opposing side immigrants may be willing to work for less. This could result in a more competitive job market and lower entry prices. Benefits of more highly educated immigrant I think that the process of selecting immigrants with higher education levels would have to start with gaining better control of our borders. Gaining better control of our border security would allow us to screen and select the individuals we permit into our control. I think that the screening process would involve a test to gauge their academic level and any ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Educated Women Only educated women make educated decisions Studies show countries with a highly educated women populace, women are deciding to hold off on having a family. Studies also show that in places of high poverty, women have more children. It's not a decision that helps improve the upward mobility of the family so much as it is a strategic decision that occurs because of lack of contraception, options, it may even be a matter of survival since these places have high child mortality rates more children equals one has the more hands working and ultimately a better chance parents will be taken care of when they get older by their child. I agree flawed policies exist, but it's because of policies like these, set by our government, that the future of a child is no longer dictated by the marital status of a child's parents. Arguments against forced fatherhood Most definitely men have less reproductive autonomy than women because men do not carry the child, are not ripped apart, giving birth to a child, do not have to suffer the experience of childbirth. Men are aware of their sperm's potential and it all could have all been avoided A man may feel as though he "accidentally impregnated a woman," however the moment he chooses to enter the woman he understands the potential consequences that come with this choice. Therefore, unless a man accidentally enters a woman without the intention of climaxing. a man does not accidentally conceive a child. Should one's chosen path, that leaves one with fewer options, be rewarded with deciding life choices for others? Should a man take precedence over a woman in her life decision she wants to make about her own future and body? Absolutely not! He can urge her to get can abortion, but ultimately the decision is hers to make because it's her body and he gave up the option not to have a child when he partook in the act which conceived the child. • 5. Doe Educated Women Before I had read this essay I was under the assumption that Doe was entertaining the idea of educating women for the sake of women.. and not for men. So that makes this a lot more enjoyable for myself to write. His argument was incredibly simple and selfish. He didn't believe women should be educated because like men, their worthy of such a practice, or, like men, they deserve the advantages that come with an education. He believed that if women were to become educated several behaviors benefiting men would result. One behavior Doe consistently reiterated was that if a woman were to become educated, she would apply to sex more often and willing. Women would also become more rather less pleasant to be around. Suggesting they were unpleasant to be around in the first place and perhaps only around in order to clean, cook, and submit to sex. Doe also went as far to say and limit what women should be educated on. Their practices would be considerably effeminate in nature, rather mathematical for example. Essentially, he wanted them to be educated, but not how we would define an educated individual today. Doe listed ideal practices for women like dance and music, as well as romantic languages. He also said women should learn to read history books, not math or science books, but history! ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... That's one reason this argument wasn't anything to consider. Moreover, the argument in which an educated women would result in a woman desiring to breed? I myself can't seem to think of how the two would magically form some sort of correlation. If anything the last thing an educated women would want to do is stay at home and hungrily await her husband to come home so the two can "breed". Will learning to speak French and learning to dance suddenly make her realize how deserving of sex her husband is? To answer the listed question, no this was a horrible ... • 7. What Is An Educated Person? I can picture being in Thomas Jones place and listening to a student wondering what the speaker is saying, their interest is not listening to the speakers, but walking the stage and the end commencement. As Thomas Jones pointed out; why did we not discuss the educated person question prior to commencement? We do need to answer the question: "What is an educated person?" (Jones) This story is so true! Had I questioned the rationale behind the requirements instead of relying on the experts to plan my educational progress; I would be in a better place for furthering my education. Instead of wondering why I was taking courses that just did not make sense; I could have understood the standards and took responsibility for my undergraduate academic decisions. I always believed that you do not need a college education to be an educated person. Through the years, I have worked with recent college graduates. Questioning how some of these individuals managed to graduate nor did I consider them an educated person. Though growth and the lifelong process of learning; it provides a different outlook. Each individual is different and we should not expect the same results from each person; do not be a judgmental person. I wondered about the rationale regarding the history requirement and other course requirements. One of my reflections were history is a part of each course and learning provides the course basics from the beginning. The history course inspired me to learn more about the ... • 9. Well-Educated Professional Women One major reason why women are not reaching leadership positions is because of the relationship inequalities that they have at home. Sandberg states, "In a 2007 study of well–educated professional women who has left the paid workforce, 60 percent cited their husband as a critical factor in their decision" (110). This is a perfect example of how much of an impact men really have on women. Whatever a man does at home, whether he notices is it or not, has a huge impact on a women at work. Sandberg goes on to explain that, "These women specifically listed their husbands' lack of participation in child care and other domestic tasks and the expectation that wives should be the ones to cut back on employment as reasons for quitting" (110). • 11. A Not So Educated Prosperous Society A not so Educated Prosperous Society A society built on the foundation of well–educated citizens will prosper and potentially eliminate corruption. Well–educated citizens make important contributions to business innovation, productivity, and national economic performance. (The Conference Board of Canada, 2015). Such citizens tend to make sound decisions that affect their quality of life and earn higher incomes, leading to a lifestyle of prosperity with social security and higher quality of health. Citizens actively contribute to the overall development and growth of the society. The reality in Canada is that about 25% of Canadians aged 25–65 have a university degree and will contribute to the development and growth of the society. Major ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This constraint restricts their quality of life and contribution to society. Since we are in the business of profiting off of the debt of the next wave of contributors, why not profit from the indebted and their skills? The reality is that students have no realistic horizon and they might as well not live in the present. I believe that a debt must be repaid whether it is in the same or different units of measure. If the student does not have the finances to repay their debt, then it is best that their life and knowledge is no longer their own and controlled by the institutions and governments indebted to until the loan's conditions have been fulfilled. These institutions can very well farm the knowledge gained by the student and grow the economy without having to worry about salaries, further reducing the cost of research and development that will then lower the baseline of corporations and institutions. I understand that this may be a mouthful to comprehend, but I assure you that it will work similarly to owing a mortgage on a house and declaring bankruptcy. In this scenario, the financial institution claims ownership of the house and the residents are kicked out, as they are unable to meet regular mortgage payments. As for the students, the loans were used to gain knowledge and methodologies from post–secondary programs. This information gained is now under the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Being Educated Research Paper Who is educated and who is not? In today's world education rules, unlike a few decades ago people could have a career without having a high school diploma, college degree, or some type of certification. Today's society and jobs are ruled by the high and middle class, which are mostly likely highly well educated people. While the lower class are at the bottom of the barrel. Most likely due to the lack of education. But when it comes down to the topic of who is educated and who is not it can go both ways. Cause no one person is really more educated than the next. There are only two type of people in this world, people who have book smarts and people who have street smarts. People who have book smarts can work with their brains, where people ... Versus the construction worker with no degree who has been working in construction for five or more years who is being paid to learn his job, and actually having experice in the field. Now I will ask you again who is more educated the designer or the worker? Now im sure you don't know. Cause now you see both are educated and they both possess knowledge about construction but from two different aspects. Now see if the construction worker and the drafting desing artist switch place's, then they would have a well rounded education of the career instead of a piece. Can they do eachother's job? Yes! If the worker goes back to school and receive a degree on drafting design. Then the worker can go in to business and contarct his self out because he knows how to design and construct. • 15. Northrop Frye's The Educated Imagination In Northrop Frye's The Educated Imagination, Frye elaborates how essential it is for man to educate his imagination. The main purpose of educating the imagination is to confront man with nature, generate a feeling of freedom, and imagination forms the basis of every human's social life In able for man relate to the world he lives in, he must have a considerable knowledge of what it is. Through literature, we learn to distinguish the objective world, where in we struggle to belong, from the human world, which is an artifact of our desires. "The world you want to live in is the human world, not an objective one: it's not an environment but a home; it's not the world you see but the world you build out of what you see" (5). We soon realize that the world we want to live in is an ideal world, a world that will suit our wants and needs. Therefore, we can ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Man's yearning to live in a human world is evidently perceived in literature using figurative language. In his first talk, Frye states how vital figurative language is to our conception of our world. "Literature belongs to the world man constructs, not to the world he sees" (12). We realize that literature is not something we think but rather a product of how we think, a result of our imagination. We see ourselves react to nature, turning the objective world into human so we can relate to it. The imagination forms the basis of the social life of every human. According to Northrop Frye, humans have feelings that "can't be directly conveyed by words" (82) and intelligence that people "almost never get a chance to use by itself." (82) Emotions and intelligence form a basic component of human nature. However, when the two are combined a resultant imagination is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Educated Women: Video Analysis A lot stood out to me from each clip. Beginning with the first one, the video really demonstrated how women are suppose to just be pretty and silent. We are not supposed to have opinions and it really kind of made me mad that the video joked about how educated women are ugly. I think that this is almost because guys feel intimidated by educated women. The next one on PMS was kind of funny but also kind of ridiculous. It was also very gender norm in the way that the man was of course watching sports. I think it would be kind of a cool idea though for guys to keep track of when their significant other is on their period or PMSing. That is just being an active partner in my opinion. Every gift that he receives is a blessing because he knows that his family could be putting the money to the house. When this boy leaves his house all he sees around him is gang life, a poor economy, and poorly educated neighbors. The other boy comes from a family that is fortunate enough to be able to provide any and everything for him. An Educated Success : Theodore Roosevelt Jose Vega English 105 Professor Cristin January 1, 2016 An Educated Success Theodore Roosevelt once said, "A man who has never gone to school may steal from a freight car; but if he has a university education, he may steal the whole railroad." Abraham Lincoln, Albert Einstein, among many other well educated people, all had a higher education that led them all to be successful. Education in America was founded in the early nineteenth century, thanks in part to Thomas Jefferson. Despite political and religious views, an education system was put into place after the Declaration of Independence was signed. In an article from the New York Times called "Is College worth it? Clearly, New Data Say" by David Leonhardt, the author states "not so many decades ago, high school was considered the frontier of education. Some people even argued that it was a waste to encourage Americans from humble background to spend four years of life attending high school. Today obviously, the notion that everyone should attend 13 years of school is indisputable" (Leonhardt 4). It was believed that the brain did not grow new cells and that it had limitations. However, those assumptions were incorrect. Current research has shown that the brain grows new nerve cells daily and that the process is sped when students are actively learning. In the article "Brainology," by Carol S. Dweck, the author presents research that shows that students that believed their intelligence was something they could develop and increase (growth mindset), had positive attitudes. This in turn allowed them to see education differently from those with a fixed mindset. Students believed that their ability could be increased and that despite hard work and errors, learning was achievable. They were not afraid to fail, because they would rise back up and continue to develop their learning ambience and expand their knowledge at the same time. • 23. What Does It Mean At Be Educated? Choices can make or break us depending on what we do. That is what Jon Spayde attempts to convey to his audience in his 1998 Unte Reader article, "What Does it Mean to Be Educated?" He goes through many examples and arguments that could possible answer this "surprisingly tricky and two–sided question" (Spayde paragraph 1). Although the actual arguments he poses throughout his article, he uses the rhetorical devices – ethos, pathos and logos, to get his readers to accept his purpose. First, Spayde uses pathos to reach to his audience. The most important technique he uses is his delayed thesis: "To fall short of you highest goals...is okay as long as you stuck to the struggle. And the joy" (Spayde paragraph 21). Unlike most articles where the thesis is somewhere near the beginning of the text, he strategically places his as the last sentence. Even though he may have had a reason placing it at the mere end, one may argue that the placement is wrong. After reading the entire article and coming to that as a conclusion, the article finally becomes clear. He may have had a doubt that not everyone would understand and accept his point of view, that proving himself was his largest concern. Spayde didn't entrust just his delayed thesis to assist in proving his argument; he included analogies. In paragraph 7, he spoke about the differences between a college dropout earning less money and a high school dropout earning more. This example was used to persuade his audience that those ... Educated Leadership As people around the world progress more and more they begin to question the capability and qualification of their leaders, whether it be the President of The United States or the governor of a local county. The question of what makes them an educated leader, whether it be their qualities or credentials, has been asked for years but what makes them what they are in the new twenty–first century. There are many things that can make or break whether people believe them to be capable of the job that they hold onto at that moment and this sort of opinion can change as quickly as night turns to day. Three questions that can be answered in accordance are who determines the qualities of an educated leader, to whom do we look to guidance in evaluating an educated leader, and what sort of qualification and qualities does and educated leader possess? ... We have learned to pick educated leaders out based on past experiences, history, and that of our own opinions. No one person can determined an educated leader. This person must be assessed as a whole by that of an entire country. There will always be people who deem this person not to be qualified to be classified as an educated leader because they go against that person's personal opinion. There are however certain qualities of an educated leader that many great and well known figures share. These sorts of things involve constant eye contact, not being afraid to make their own path, a sense of purpose, and have respect towards others at the highest level. • 29. Conception Of An Educated Person Most individuals consider an educated person to be a professor, lawyer, doctor, or anyone who has completed at least four years at a university. I, however, consider an educated person to be anyone who holds a piece of knowledge that can be obtained through one's day–to–day life. One is not required to attend an institution of higher learning to be considered an educated person, nor is it necessary that he or she earns a degree, or even a diploma. Despite many individuals believing that a traditional education must be received in order to be considered an "educated" person, there are multiple routes that one can choose; therefore, one is not defined by the amount of schooling that he or she has obtained. Although an individual may be considered "educated", he or she does not necessarily possess greater knowledge than a carpenter or a real estate broker. • 31. What It Means To Be Educated Essay There are those who say that the goal of education is to avoid boredom, but they are only partly correct. Avoiding boredom, like the many other goals of education, is only a secondary goal. The primary goal is to succeed at the many aspects of life. Education is a process of becoming a more capable person than before the learning process began. It allows a person to get a job, have interests, and to improve society. One of the most important reasons to get educated is to get a job. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate for people with a doctoral degree is only 2.1%, while the unemployment rate for people with a high school diploma is 9.0%. Also, people with a doctoral degree earn an average of $1,591 weekly, but people with a high school diploma earn only $668 per week. As the statistics show, an educated person is much more likely to earn a living wage and live a comfortable life than an uneducated person. Education gives people the ability to not only earn enough money, but to make the right choices as well. • 33. The Educated Imagination Study Guide for The Educated Imagination Northrop Frye (1912–1991) read his Massey Lectures over the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC radio) in 1962. First published by Indiana University Press in 1964, the six lectures present key concepts from Frye's Anatomy of Criticism: Four Essays (Princeton University Press, 1957). Chapter One. "The Motive for Metaphor." Frye begins by exploring the relation of language and literature. "What is the relation of English as the mother tongue to English as a literature?" he asks (p. 16), and before he can give an answer, he has to explain why people use words. He identifies three different uses of language, which he also terms types or levels of language. 1. "The language of consciousness or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 63). From this point, he concludes that literature is concerned with symbolic action, that literary or mythological characters are typical, and that the world of poet imagery is "totally symbolic" (p. 75). He then moves to the principle of "literature as a whole" (p. 49): "you don't just read one poem or novel after another, but enter into a complete world of which every work of literature forms a part" (p. 69). Hence there is a progressive element in the study and teaching of literature: as we read more works, we become able to generalize from our experience of literature. Frye can now anticipate the social function of literature, to be discussed in chapter 6. "What is the use of studying the imagination?" he asks (p. 77). He values literature, first, because of "its encouragement of tolerance" (p. 77), produced by "the power of detachment in the imagination" (p. 78). Once a person like Mark Anthony or Cleopatra becomes a literary character (like the heroes of Shakespeare's tragedy) we think of them differently. Indeed, literature tends to swallow life. "And the imagination won't stop until it's swallowed everything" (p. 80). Chapter Four: "The Keys to Dreamland" Frye now deals with the respective claims of the reader and writer, the producer and consumer of literature. "We need two powers in literature," he says, "a power to create and a power to understand" (p. 104). Both writer and reader need to understand literary convention. What are we using to educate students? Most schools use some guidelines such as frameworks, curriculums, hopefully to help students gain a well balanced exposure to many subjects and areas, to help students become educated people. This leads into the question when thinking about education is who is qualified to facilitate the teaching? Although an education can be paid for, no one can physically give you an education, so it is not a gift. There are societal situations where an education is a necessity, but not many globally. Education is a tool to be utilized differently in every part of the world. Knowledge is power, but some knowledge is more powerful depending on your region. There are some circumstances where special educational aspects are a necessity in a certain region, but education is not global. A farmer educated in cultivation in Nebraska could nourish himself indefinitely, but take away his farm and he has nothing but the knowledge of farming. There are certain things that a person must know in order to have the power to survive in a chosen society. These things change with regards to the society at hand. In more developed places it is pertinent that you know how to read. Without this skill a person will remained severely uninformed, disconnected, and uneducated. The Educated Imagination Character Analysis Excerpt of Critical Theory From reading the excerpt, "The Educated Imagination," by Northrop Frye, the author discusses the patterns that repeat themselves throughout the history of literature, such as the theory of mythology, which refers to the Hero's Journey(The Monomyth). In my ISU novel, "Son of a Trickster," by Eden Robinson, she applies the theory of mythology from the excerpt as a template or pattern of how the literature of her novel is written. In Frye's excerpt, he suggests how "young gods or heroes who go through various adventures and then are deserted or betrayed and killed, and then come back to life again," which is a general relation to the beginning, middle, and the end of the threshold of the Hero's Journey. You kept telling me why Percy was the best train"(pg. 245). Jared's younger mentality resulted for his ignorance and his apathy for magic and his family which lead him to cross the threshold into the unknown. Before crossing the threshold, supernatural aid from the Hero's Journey is shown when Jared encounters a raven, who assists him through his adolescence. In between the first and second threshold, Robinson uses Belly of the Whale from the Hero's Journey when Jared starts hallucinating and visualizing things from the unknown world and Jared experiences The Meeting with the Goddess and Woman as Temptress when she meets Sarah, a being connected to the unknown world. Next, Frye's excerpt states that the heroes "then are deserted or betrayed and killed" which represents the middle of the threshold. This idea that America is the highest leading power in the world has brainwashed upcoming adults and shown them the wrong mentality which they have developed overtime. A main controversy in America is Education. If America says they are great, why is it that the country is not even ranked in the top ten countries for education? An adversary of this claim would say that, "Education doesn't determine the Extent of America's power", which is completely true, but the fact of the matter is, education is the key to power. When a person is intelligent, others trust that person to make the right decision. People who are more knowledgeable about a subject, get put in charge to lead others. It is erroneous to think otherwise. The question many should now ask, is "What makes American Education different to the education in other countries?". There is a separation between these systems through techniques in teaching, mandatory testing, social affairs, and expectations. In order to produce well–educated people, there must be a scholarly educator who spends time to teach the future generation, or in short–terms a teacher. Teachers are the building blocks of education. It is their job to produce leaders in the country to come. As declared by Frye, "The world of literature is a world where there is no reality except that of the human imagination." (Frye, 57). This "world of literature" is similar to a social vision as both limits are dependent only upon belief. In the case of the USSR, the issue was due to the oppressive nature of the government, the literary training required for belief in a better future had not developed among citizens. A great philosopher named Aristotle came up with some big ideas that still ring true today. Aristotle understood the fact that even though we may not agree, it doesn't hurt to at least we ponder a presented idea for a while. This is shown through one of his quotes "It is the mark of an educated mind to entertain a thought without accepting it." Among others, employment status, receipt of non–cash assistance, and family status play an important role in the likelihood of divorce (Stockdale, 2011). • 55. What Does it Mean to Be Educated? Alfie Kohn on education: What does it mean to be educated? According to Alfie Kohn's essay "The dangerous myth of grade inflation," one of the most commonly–cited truisms in education today is that higher education is 'easier' than it was in the past. Critics contend that grades have become puffed up while student performance has actually weakened. Kohn believes this is a culturally–produced myth rather than a statistically justified reality. In fact, the notion that grades were less generously bestowed to students is a durable cliché which extends back to the 19th century, and is not merely relegated to our own era. Today, the perpetrators cited as the worst offenders are liberal professors from the 1960s who have lapped up a generally permissive attitude from that era. But "a report released just this year by the National Center for Education Statistics revealed that fully 33.5 percent of American undergraduates had a grade–point average of C or below in 1999–2000" (Kohn 2002: B7). Kohn sees the anxieties about grade inflation as indicative of a larger cultural anxiety of what it means to be an educated person, and believes that a fixation on grades is a fundamentally misguided way to improve the American educational system. Furthermore, even when grades are higher, this does not necessarily mean that student performance is worse: admission to college, for example, is more competitive than ever before, which may be prompting students to turn in higher–caliber work. ... When someone is describing a person as well–educated, consideration for both formal and informal types of education should be included. Informal education is very important as well; however, it is learning on a different level. • 63. The Definition of an Educated Person Our team likes this definition of an educated person. We understand that if you go to school, you will learn a subject well. But we also understand that many of us will see career paths that are not traditional, or linear in nature. We will work in fields that are not what we studied. If all we learned was basic skills and knowledge, we would cease to be educated the minute we stepped away from our chosen field of study. What the Michigan State University is trying to say is that education is more than just learning a few things to get a degree. Education being an educated person really does mean being able to continuously learn. To have knowledge and to know how to use it are both components of being educated. We feel, therefore, that the definition of an educated person put forth by Michigan State University is very accurate. The statement is succinct, so that we might not want to add anything to the definition. It implies that the process of becoming an educated person is something that will deliver a lifetime of value, rather than simply a skill that can be used to get a job. This lifetime value is one of the reasons why an education usually pays for itself manifold down the road, as students who become educated people are more adaptable, more successful and better able to succeed when placed in difficult situations. Throughout the course of human existence, education has always triumphed. But what is Education? It is derived from the Latin word "educatio", which means to bring up. Could life be prosperous and gratifying without "education"? To be educated is defined differently by different individuals. I define education as a field of study, the result produced from teaching, training, or learning, and the act or process of acquiring general knowledge, then developing the powers of reasoning and judgement from oneself or others intellectually for mature life, If it was not for education being a field of study, there would not be teachers. As a toddler, specifically kindergarten age, I was asked "What do you want to be when you grow up?" I replied enthusiastically saying, "A teacher of course." At that age, subliminally, I knew I had to go to school and receive a degree in teaching in order to do so. It was not until I became an adult, I learned that in order to be an instructor of knowledge, I would have to major in Education rather than teaching as I previously believed. One would think after soaking in education for 12 plus years, that our knowledge of it is profound. There is more to education than what is viewed by a fledgling learning eye. One has to grasp essential techniques, diverse training and even reiterated on basic information to a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Homeless Should Be Educated Homeless should receive the same level and support of education as other student do.They are just normal people like others but are in worser circumstances. They could have had money or a house at some point but had problems in the way and had just lost everything. The homeless deserve a better lifestyle to live, they deserve an opportunity to learn and get and education that would lead them to prosperity. The benefits of going to school will allow them to receive some sort of food if they cannot do so. Being able to receive food and education will allow them to prosper through life.Having such ability is the least that can be done for them. The first step needed towards this should start at schools, adding another compartment to their building, where ... • 69. Child Well Educated What Makes a Child Well Educated? In the article by A. Kohn What does it mean to be well educated? (2003). Kohn begins with talking about his incredibly intelligent wife who is a physician, but when is comes to grammar and punctuation she fails miserably. He asked the question "What does it mean to be well educated?" (Kohn, 2003) Is it to be able to take a test well? Or be able to show what you know in a hands on way that makes you well educated. He then digresses into the Common Core State Standards that have been adopted by almost every state, and he asks if this is the right approach to judge being well educated. In the conclusion, of his article he states that learning needs to be desired by the individual and the means to do so. In my ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In my own experience, I have seen children perform very well when given flash cards to learn their math. In both ways the children are being tested, but with flash cards there is a more relaxed and fun atmosphere which takes the pressure off of the children. While Mr. Kohn (2003) does not specifically address paper tests he does mention passing tests to reach a prescribed goal. In addition to paper tests, oral tests are another great way for children to showcase their abilities. Mr. Kohn states (2003), "In about half the states, people sitting atop Mount Olympus have decreed that anyone who doesn't pass a certain standardized test will be denied a diploma and, by implication, classified as inadequately educated" (p.27). For those students who have trouble taking tests, oral exams are a great way to see what a child has learned and a good life skill. For example, my husband is not much of a public speaker, but through the Navy that has changed over the years. We need to test our children on their public speaking without calling it a test, it is more like a life skill that is needed. Standardize testing does not give us that opportunity if all they need to do is fill in a bubble on a test. We need to give children a chance to show us how they shine best if we are to truly see how well–educated a child ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Sholes 11/12/2012 To be or not to be well–educated: A Narrative Response to Alfie Kohn's "What does it mean to be well–educated?" To be or not to be well–educated: A Narrative Response to Alfie Kohn's "What does it mean to be well–educated?" Alfie Kohn's essay "What does it mean to be well–educated?" begins on a personal note using his wife as an example to substantiate his hypothesis. Encountering Alisa at the very beginning of the essay was indeed a refreshing way to initiate thought into a subject not often considered. Today not everyone ponders the real relevance behind education nor does anyone contemplate just how much of education is needed to be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Nevertheless, something is imbibed. Education in a good school does seem to show in the kind of person you become and whether anything is remembered or not the molding influence is indelible. Secondly good education when put to use is much handier when compared to a lower grade of education. Kohn's question of consensus set me rapidly agreeing with him. Levels of education do vary between countries, states, and even the past and present. What is well–educated in one country may not be up to standard in another (2003, par. 9). Today a person with a doctorate in India is well– respected and highly valued in his/her country but when the same person wishes to teach in America or Britain he/she must acquire a teaching certification as most of the time local credentials are not accepted. The next stage of Kohn's reasoning involved ruling out what might not be considered as being well– educated. Being well–educated does not depend on the number of hours spent in class, how well– prepared for a career one is, test–scores, or rote–learning (2003, pars. 12–15). Although intelligent students do get good test scores this does not happen all of the time as there are several smart students who do not seem to perform well. Also, and in this as in the previous point I completely agree with Kohn, memorizing everything that is just a click away on the internet does not necessarily translate into being considered well–educated. ... Undocumented Immigrants Should Be Educated I believe that undocumented immigrants should be eligible for free public education, but as afar for health care and social services I still have mixed feelings. I believe that with so much controversy around this issue of undocumented immigrants, I stand for what is fair for undocumented and documented groups. For example, in the educational resource, I believe that all the children regardless of their documents status should be educated. The main factor I will suggest why undocumented children should be educated is because they are now part of our society. And either we like it or not, either is fair or not, either we have opinion about the whole immigration status. The children are here now, they are part of our society, and eventually they ... • 75. The Importance Of Being An Educated Person "School provides a place for mental, physical, and ethical development. Character is taught and learned in many settings: in the classroom, in the hallways, in the lunchroom, and on the sports field" As, Diane Ravitch stated in her essay "The Essentials Of A Good Education". So, now I wonder what does it mean to be an educated person. Well, today I am going to give you an explanation of what it means to be an educated person in my own opinion. I will also be narrating one particular experience from my own life which lead me to the conclusion of this term. My experience is in reference to my job; which has made me expand my knowledge. Further–more this made me the educated individual I am today. (Ravitch 111,112). In my early adolescence I considered education being just solely a term referring to public high school and college classes. I was taught in order to have a good future I had to graduate from both and land a good paying job. So, due to this expectation of graduating from college; I always would and look up to people with a degree. I classified anyone else with out a degree into a category who was beneath someone who had a college education. This speculation that any–one with out a degree was stupid was later proved wrong. After, I had a first hand experience I was able to understand the importance of real life situations. The interesting thing about my development as an individual; I am constantly able to learn new skills as long as I have an open mind. This leads ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Does it apply to someone who got straight A's is school and did well on standardized tests? Does it mean that they are smart or just good at memorizing their material and requirements for tests? If they are good at passing test by memorizing all the material but then forget it as soon as the test is done then what good was taking a test in the first place? Is a well–educated person the same thing as a smart person? If a person went to an adequate school and receives a good education then it would be concluded that they are well– educated but that doesn't necessarily mean they are smart. It might just mean ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sitting in a classroom for a certain number of hours does not make one well–educated (Kohn). Throughout the school day of an average high school for example how much time do you actual spend learning? An average school day is around seven hours with about nine periods dividing up the day. If each period is around forty minutes with five minutes to get to your classes you spend almost an hour in between periods getting from one class to another throughout the course of a day. You have about forty minutes for lunch, a study hall or sometimes two and some kind of elective like gym or art. That's not much time left for actually learning anything useful. When I was in middle school I remember my teachers wasting almost half of the period explaining in detail what we would be doing for the day instead of actually doing it. If the time you spent at school measures how well you're educated than it's not a very good measurement to go on. If the time you spent in school meant you are well–educated then you can easily agree that every student is well–educated and we know that's not the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
