SMART BUILDINGS AND NORMAL BUILDINGS
TAIBAH UNIVERSITY
COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING
Problem statement:
Normal buildings consume and waste a lot of energy.
therefore, it may causes side effects like: Global warming ,
pollution and the waste of energy and money .Normal
buildings could be out of service when electricity goes off
when there is no alternative source for electricity as in
smart buildings that consume much less energy and cost
with the same efficiency. So, the problem is the high
energy consumption and cost in normal buildings .
smart building :
A building that provides a productive and cost-effective
environment through optimization of its four basic
components - structure, systems, services and
management - and the interrelationships between them.
 Smart buildings interfere with almost everything in our
lives such as, control
systems, electric power management, security and
safety systems.
Why Buildings?
Buildings consume ~ 40% of the world’s energy – far more
than what is used in other areas such as transportation,
.nearly every building wastes energymanufacturing ,
BACKGROUND
Method :
we are going to apply a verity of method in our
research which include charts and diagrams that we
learned in the engineering design course such as :
Dunker Diagram , Desired state , critical path and other
tables . our research will be supported by quantitative
method giving statistical explanations .
Situation analysis : an electrical outage in the university buildings.
Timing (H) , Trend (L) , Impact (H)
Timing : all classrooms and labs are out of power so the problem is urgent
and should be solved immediately .
Trend : there is no potential of growth so it got rate low .
Impact : students can't use the labs and they are missing the lectures .

Critical path for suggested solution :
Solar Panels:
Process of generating an electricity to the building by using solar panel
A normal
building
A smart building uses a big solar panels and a parking pay station uses a small solar
panel.
In December 2008 the Transportation Service in
Oregon is the first solar system in the United States.
A matrix of 104-kilowatt photovoltaic cells produces
more than 30% of the electricity consumed by the
lights in the highways between States.
AdvantagesElement
-extends the life of air conditioners by at
least 25% .
- Reduce energy consumption up to 30% .
- Reduces maintenance work by30% .
- Can be controlled with the remote when
traveling.

%- Water saving by not less than 75Water taps equipped with sensors
-Reducing the number of guards by at
least 50%

Safety consideration:
Converting the building into smart is absolutely safe
and provide more protection . Decreasing the overload
on the generator that might prevent possible fires.
Normal buildings have many problems. They consume
most of the world energy. It waste’s a lot of energy and
money and causes many bad effects. Smart buildings are
the best solution . It use much less energy with high
efficiency which reduces the rates of pollution and global
warming. Also, it save a lot money and resources.
