Looks like I can still teach you something here today –

Are you one of those 14 million?Yes, I saw all hands up at the beginningNo, some of you are not there yet...Start networking and profiling yourself now and when you graduate you’ll have a great network to help you find a job.Done well, you’ll even be a “know name” in the right circlesHow cool is that!--- lets have a look at some strategies you can use on LinkedIn to make this happen!

Open an accountEnter the details in your profielAdd connectionsJoin some groupsSit back and relaxWhat do you think is there a point in joining LinkedIn and be an IN-active user?YES [hands up]NO [hand up]Even if this is all you do, it is still important to have a presence on LinkedIn:You have a permanent online resume (do keep it up to date though)You can add the URL to your Public Profile to your resume and email signature

On top of the actions from the IN-active strategy you also:Place updates (just like on Facebook, but then related to your professional ambitions)Comment on other people’s updatesShare updates or interesting Internet contentTake part in discussions in the groups you’ve joinedThis creates visibility remember, each action shows your name and photo so after a while people start to notice you!This gives you the opportunity to show and share you expertise, you don’t need work experience to have expertise!

This is the most effective strategy.It is also the most advanced and involved strategy.Todays session doesn’t allow to go into that much detail.Put shortly, it involves using LinkedIn cleverly to find people that can help you reach your goal (a job, a client, information) and to get in touch with these people other than sending them a link request out of the blue.

I have blocked part of the names and the companies, so that might look a bit funny.Apart from that, what is your opinion of these three first impressions?There are 21,629,911 managers on LinkedIn, you are not going to stand out in search results.More to the point? What does “manager” tell us about this person?He is actually “policy manager innovation and development” now if you read that in combination with the company it would make more senseDirector of purchasing tells us exactly what she does at her company!The third one is breaching LinkedIns terms and conditions. In the namefield you are ONLY allowed to enter your name.You often see people adding their phonenumber or something like 2000+ connections.When LinkedIn spots a profile like this they have the right to remove it. Generally they will first deactivate it and give you a chance to comply.

What impression does this picture give?Does it come across professional?Does a yellow was and adding sparkling stars give credibility to a creative communicator?You could argue that it will appeal to the right target group.That is will establish a natural selectionPersonally I believe you might loose a lot of options.There are people who can refer you on... The people you want to reach might not react badly to this picture,But what is the point if the people that can put you in touch won’t give you a second look?

Start discussionsYou are the leader, be sure to embrace your first follower! Always reply to the first comment, thank them for their contributionParticipate in discussionsWhen you find a person doing something great:Be the person who transforms a lone nut into a leaderJust remember:Nurture your first followerMake everything clearly about the movement, not about youBe public, be easy to followDon’t be invisible:2-3 comments a week2-3 likes a week1 profile update a week
  11. Arjan just got exposure to my 367 connections.We share 9 connections, so what does that leave...Not bad for saying something nice isn’t it?As I clicked on like the next day, he got the exposure twice!

When you are active on social media, including LinkedInShare linksShare interesting articlesBlend into running conversations about topics of your fieldGive free tipsHave a persistent online presenceWrite a blog and allow commentsa blog is also a great way to show expertise whey you haven’t got work experience yet.Blog about products you work on, articles you’ve come across, insites you’ve gainedLink you blog to LinkedIn
