This document discusses starting a Rugged DevOps journey using Nexus, Jenkins, and Docker. It presents a Rugged Software Factory model with continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipelines for building software from source code in public repositories, running builds and tests, and deploying to development, QA, user acceptance testing, and production environments. The model emphasizes early feedback, policy enforcement through trusted containers, and monitoring for new issues.

The first PaaS debuted in 2005. Designed to make developers’ lives easier and operations obsolete, PaaS barely registered in the enterprise landscape. Kubernetes v1 debut in 2015 and changed the game.
Kubernetes dominates mindshare (and market share), has been adopted by all major IT vendors, and faces no real competition for container orchestration. Kubernetes is now one of the hottest and most in-demand skills in our profession.
While Kubernetes makes running containers easier it can make development more complex. In this talk we will look at how deploying to Kubernetes effects your day to day work as a developer from test/compile/commit to design patterns and tooling.
Continuous delivery is a powerful concept, but hard to achieve. One of the challenges is automating the setup of environments and the deployment of the Java EE applications. We have looked at and used quite some tools like for instance Chef, Puppet, Vagrant and Nolio. All tools had one thing in common: we had never used them. Why should we invest time in mastering those tools? There is a perfect alternative in Jenkins, a tool most developers are familiar with. Besides the basic Jenkins buildserver capabilities it offers quite some useful plugins like the Build Pipeline plugin. To setup environments the popular Docker project is used. Docker allows you to create containers from any application. Only some knowledge is required for the setup of the containers. The rest of the configuration is done through commands most people are quite familiar with.
The Docker Way: modernize traditional applications without action (wu-wei) and create new cloud native microservices applications with naturalness (ziran).
This talk also provides a summary of all the DockerCon EU 2017 announcements: Kubernetes now supported in Docker, MTA, IBM partnership.

This session will demonstrate how to use Rancher and Docker Compose to deploy and upgrade applications predictably into production environments. Rancher Co-Founder Darren Shepherd will demonstrate how to deploy an application from a Docker compose application catalog into production, and then how to orchestrate an upgrade of that application.

Too many companies miss this critical step, leading to gaps in their operations, which can lead to production issues, API outages, inability to upgrade, and general instability of the cloud. It all begs the question: “Do you even test?" During this session, attendees will learn how Rackspace leverages Red Hat’s Distributed Continuous Integration (DCI) to build a better OpenStack experience for their customers while reducing the time required to not only roll out the latest version of OpenStack to new customers, but also begin upgrading customers within weeks of announcement. In addition to this, the automated testing in DCI raises bugs directly with Red Hat QEs team to shorten the feedback cycle and improve the final product.

In normal project work everybody will have heard the sentence: „On my local machine it worked“! The circumstances which lead to this statement are that there are usually minor inconsistencies within the setup of the different environments. Different operating systems, Java versions or installed hot fixes influent the behavior of the developed application and cause issues. This is where Docker comes in place. Docker automates the deployment of applications and isolates them inside software containers, by providing an additional layer of abstraction and automation but with out the overhead caused by a virtual machine. Ones set up, it limits the installation process to 5 minutes independent which environment. Furthermore, the same application can be reused to run on local machines, data centers or in the cloud. We will show you how we incorporated Docker in our continuous deployment process and how we facilitate it for our development and deployment chain.
