Can Kubernetes Keep a Secret? - Women in AppSec WebinarSoluto
We’ve all experienced it: you’re working on a task, adding some code, and then you need to store some sensitive configuration value. It could be an API key, client secret or an encryption key ― something that’s highly sensitive and must be kept secret. And this is where things get messy. Usually, secret storage is highly coupled with how the code is deployed, and different platforms have different solutions. Kubernetes has a promise to simplify this process by using the native secret object, which, as the name implies, can be used to store secrets or sensitive configurations. Unfortunately, Kubernetes secrets are fundamentally broken, and a developer who tries to use them will definitely have some issues. But no need to worry ― there are solid alternatives for storing secrets securely on Kubernetes platform. One solution is to use Kamus, an open-source, git-ops solution, that created by Soluto, for managing secrets on Kubernetes. Kamus can encrypt a secret so it can be decrypted only by your app on runtime - and not by anyone else. The first part of this session will cover the challenges faced when using Kubernetes secrets (from a usability and security point of view). The second part will discuss some of the existing solutions (Sealed Secrets, Helm Secrets and others), their pros, and cons, and then feature Kamus: how it works, what problems it solves, how it differs from other solutions, and what threats it can help mitigate (and what threats it can’t). The talk will cover all that is required to know so you can run Kamus on your own cluster and use it for secret management. Join me for this session to learn how you can build a Kubernetes cluster than can keep a secret ― for real.

Behind the scenes with Docker volume pluginsClusterHQ
A story of cross-company and cross-continent open-source collaboration.
Last June at DockerCon in San Francisco, Solomon announced experimental support for Docker volume plugins, making it possible to build add-ons to Docker that manage persistent storage. The run-up to that announcement was a frenetic 9 months of cross-company and cross-timezone collaboration. At ClusterHQ, we were deeply involved in building the interface, and we also made our own Docker volume plugin Flocker available for migrating data volumes between nodes in a cluster. In this talk, I'll share stories on what it was like working with the Docker team and others in the ecosystem to build this API. We'll cover how you also can take advantage of Docker volume plugins to leverage stateful containers. I'll guide you through the Docker plugin model and show off some of the existing plugins so you can see how to enable stateful containers for your own use cases.

PuppetConf 2017: What’s in the Box?!- Leveraging Puppet Enterprise & Docker- ...Puppet
“Docker, Docker, Docker.” It’s a phrase we hear often, but what are containers, what can they be used for, and why should you know more about them? In this session, Grace (Puppet) and Tricia (AppDynamics) will introduce attendees to Docker and help them build and deploy their first container with Puppet. They will leverage the docker_image_build module from the Puppet Forge and take attendees through the proper workflow for coupling Docker and Puppet together. The session will focus on how to use some of the newest Docker features, such as multi-stage build files and password stores within Docker so you can pass "secrets" to a swarm for login credentials. The goal is to provide newcomers with a working proficiency of how to get started deploying containers using Puppet as their automation tool.

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:

Securing your Kubernetes cluster_ a step-by-step guide to success !KatiaHIMEUR1
Today, after several years of existence, an extremely active community and an ultra-dynamic ecosystem, Kubernetes has established itself as the de facto standard in container orchestration. Thanks to a wide range of managed services, it has never been so easy to set up a ready-to-use Kubernetes cluster.
However, this ease of use means that the subject of security in Kubernetes is often left for later, or even neglected. This exposes companies to significant risks.
In this talk, I'll show you step-by-step how to secure your Kubernetes cluster for greater peace of mind and reliability.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
