3. INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE
➢ Pattadakal, formerly known as Raktapura, is a small town in the Bagalkot
district of north Karnataka, India. It is famous for its UNESCO world
heritage site. Pattadakal region was settled in pre-historic timess evidence by
megalithic dolmens.
➢ Significance. According to art historian Cathleen Cummings, the monuments at
Pattadakal are a historically significant example of religion, society, and culture,
particularly Hindu and Jain, in the Deccan region and is an expression of Hindu
kingship and religious worldview of 8thcentury India.

➢ According to art historian Cathleen Cummings, the monuments at Pattadakal are

➢ The Mallikarjuna and the Virupaksha temples at Pattadakal, were built by two
queens of Vikaramaditya II, to commemorate the victory of the Chalukyas over the
Pallavas. Virupaksha temple, built by Queen Lokamahadevi, was originally called
Lokeshwara. This temple is built in the southern Dravida style and is the largest in
the enclosure. It has a massive gateway and several inscriptions.Virupaksha temple
also served as a model for the Rashtrakuta ruler to carve out the great Kailasa at
Ellora. The sculptural art of the early Chalukyas is characterized by grace and

5. LOCATION AND BESTTIME TO TRAVEL
➢ Situated in the southern State of Karnataka, Pattadakal group of monuments are
famous for their harmonious blend of architectural forms of northern and southern
India. Pattadakal, the capital of the Chalukya dynasty of medieval India, is 22 km
away from Badami and 514 km from Bangalore. This famous world heritage site
consists of a group of ten major temples, each displaying interesting architectural
features.
BEST TIME TO TRAVEL
➢ The climate of Pattadakal, like other places in North Karnataka, is pleasant. The
place is accessible throughout the year. Monsoon starts from mid-April and
continues to mid-September. The best season to visit this place is during winter,
that is, from October to March.
6. ARCHITECTURE
➢ There are 10 major temples in Pattadakal, all dedicated to Lord Shiva. The
temples contain elements of both South Indian (Dravidian) and North Indian
(Nagara) styles of architecture. The timeless beauty and historical relevance
of these temples saw them acquire the status of a world heritage site in
1987.Four temples are constructed in the traditional Dravidian style of
architecture, with another 4 temples containing elements of Nagara
architecture.
➢ The remaining two temples are a confluence of both architectural styles. The
entire city resonates with the power of Shiva and draws several thousand
tourists to it every year.
7. CURRENT STATUS
➢ Pattadakal' is a town in the state of Karnataka in India which hosts the
famous cultural dance event known as “Pattadakal Dance festival” once
in a year in the month of January
➢ The world famous Pattadakal Dance Festival is a rare event that art lovers can never
afford to miss. After enjoying the three day extravaganza of some breath taking
performances by prominent artists from across the country one can explore the
architectural intricacies of the Virupaksha Temple, Sangameshvara Temple,
Mallikarjuna Temple, Kashivisvanatha Temple, Kadasiddhesvara and
Jambulingeswara' temples, Galganatha temple and Jain Temples. Pattadakal, set on
the banks of river Malaprabha is widely popular for these historic temples.
8. DISCUSSION AND SUMMARY
➢ Presently there is not much to explore and there are no good accommodation
options and restaurants in and around Pattadakal . So by setting up restaurants
and accommodations in and around the place we can increase tourists . We can
fund the unesco for redevelopment as well
