Hepatitis viruses A, B, C, D, E and G cause infection of the liver. Hepatitis A and E are usually foodborne and spread through the fecal-oral route, while Hepatitis B and C are bloodborne and spread through blood or sexual contact. Hepatitis A is common in children in areas with poor sanitation and spreads through contaminated food or water. Hepatitis B infects over 350 million people worldwide and is a major cause of death. It spreads through blood, needles, sexual contact and from mother to child. While most Hepatitis B infections resolve, some people become long-term carriers. Vaccination provides effective protection against Hepatitis A and B.
