2. Henry II (1133-1189) was the king of France.
He also gained and controlled Normandy
from his father, Geoffroi IV count of Anjou
He was the ruler of most of Western France.
3. Henry II took over England when King Stephen
died.
Louis Vii of France tried to organize a
treaty to oppose Henry’s rule as king. But
the treaty failed.
4. In 1158 Louis VII forcefully engaged his daughter
Marguerite to Henry’s oldest son, who was also named
Henry.
Henry II and Louis Vii had a healthy
relationship for five years but the good
relationship ended when Henry tried to
claim his wife’s land Toulouse, a small town
in west France.
5. Louis Vii tried to prevent the attack by defending
the town. The war between Henry and Louis lasted
until 1161
6. In 1167 war broke out between Henry and Louis again, this
time much more gruesome.
War started because of Henry’s
intervention into a argument over
the country of Auvergne.
7. Henry II ended the war in peace in 1169, when
Louis VII proposed marriage of his daughter
Alice to Henry’s son Richard.
8. In 1173 Henry’s wife, Eleanor, and Henry’s 3 oldest
sons rebelled against him and joined an alliance
with Louis Vii
The revolt against Henry II took two years to stop. And
war threatened with Louis again in 1177, but the Treaty
of Ivry settled whatever differences there were.
9. Louis VII died and Henry II declared Philip II as his heir.
10. Henry’s sons began disputing with each other. Mostly they
each wanted to be his successor after Henry’s death.
11. Philip went to war with
Henry in 1187, demanding that his brother
Richard should marry Alice, Louis VII’s
daughter, as had been arranged previously.
Henry tried to bargain his youngest
son, John, into marriage with Alice.
In finding out about this Richard
was outraged and he turned
against his father and in 1188 tried
to start war, however Henry II
quickly gave up and died a few
days later
