Henry Hudson was an English explorer hired by trading companies to find a northern sea route to Asia. In 1607 and 1608, sailing for the English Muscovy Company, he failed to find the Northeast Passage. In 1609, sailing for the Dutch East India Company, he explored along the eastern coast of North America and was the first European to sail up the Hudson River. He continued exploring the Arctic for England but vanished during a 1611 voyage after his crew mutinied.
