6 eco kids elocution contest
1. Infant Jesus Church, Shankarwadi.
Date: Sunday, 26th
June at the community level and
10th
July at the parish level-finals (Combined with inaugural get-together at 4 pm in the AV hall)
RULES
1. This contest is open to all the registered ECO KIDS from all the 18 communities of our parish.
2. The participants can take any topic on environment for their speech. Plenty of topics are available in the
internet and GEM PPTs (example - forests are green lungs, climate change, biodiversity, plastic – boon or
bane, say no to bottled water, save ponds and lakes, water/air pollution, coal/sand mining, life style
changes, bees and environment etc etc (see infantjesusjogeshwari website).
3. The speech will be about 2 to 3 minutes. Language could be English, Hindi and Marathi.
4. During the coming Sunday, 19th
June official ECO KIDS monthly meeting, animators’ in-charge will explain
the rules and allot the topics for participants. Kids have one week to prepare.
5. Just reading the speech from a written paper is not considered a good speech and will get negative points.
There is enough time to prepare/memorise the speech (both for comty level and parish level contest).
6. Just to help kids, you may explain these simple clues of a good speech (which also helps to remember
better):
a] Starter - begin the speech with some incident, fact, example, self-disclosure/experience, story etc.).
b] Main body: Present the main content of the speech point wise - points 1, 2, 3 etc.
c] Conclusion: conclude with something to provoke thinking, reflection and action in the listeners.
Presentation of speech few clues: eye contact, (don’t look at the fans, wall etc. look at audience), physical
gestures, facial expressions, voice/clarity etc.
With these few clues, kids can easily prepare a speech of 2/3 minutes.
7. The community level Elocution contest will be considered as an ECO KIDS project and will get 20 points,
provided minimum 10 kids participate (refer the June feedback form attached). The top 3 will participate in
the final contest at parish level. Submit the following entry form to Fr Felix before Sunday, July 3, 2016.
8. The final contest will be held on Sunday 10th
July in our church A.V. hall during the inaugural gathering of
SCC ECO KIDS.
9. For the winners (say, top 3) at the community level, the animators will arrange some prizes. But for the
winners in the final contest, the prize/certificate will be awarded during the ENVIRONMENT RALLY (similar
to last year).
10. In the following entry form, write the names of the winners (participating in the finals) and also write the
number of ECO KIDS attending the INAUGURAL GET-TOGTHER. Names/nos are needed to arrange
snacks/drink.

3. ROTATING TROPHY FOR ‘ZERO GARBAGE SOCEITY’
ZERO GARBAGE or WASTE MANAGEMENT is a project which helps to protect the environment by managing
the waste generated by human beings in an efficient way. Efficient handling of waste begins from segregation of
waste.
Segregation of waste is simple concept. Every flat/house owner will segregate the waste produced at their homes
into wet and dry (see reverse which is wet and dry waste). Wet waste is handed over to the BMC vehicles (as
usual), and the dry waste is sold to the scrape dealers. The proceeds collected from the dry waste may be used
for the welfare of the housing society workers (or as decided by the Managing Committee).
The housing societies which start the segregation at source will be awarded a rotating trophy in the
presence of a large congregation (example - after the Sunday Mass or during the major school
programmes). Simple rules for this contest will be as follows:
1. When the Managing committee succeeds in educating its residents, they can issue a circular to start the
segregation at their flats/houses. For a sample copy of the circular to be issued to the families, you may visit –
www.stfrancisxavierpanvel.in. Go to the GEM section and click – Appeal letter-Zero Garbage.
2. Once all the residents begin the segregation at source, please fill the entry form at the bottom of this page and
submit in our church office. The Parish Environment Cell (PEC) members will visit your society to verify if your
claim is correct.
3. When the PEC members are convinced about the authenticity of your claim, a date will be mutually decided
with the society reps to award Rotating Trophy.
4. After 3 months of successful completion of segregation by all the flat owners, the PEC members will visit your
society again to see if you are continuing with the project. If yes, a date and venue will be mutually fixed to give
away the token cash prize. (NGOs/corporate can come forward to sponsor this prize as a part of their Corporate
Social Responsibility-CSR).
5. The first housing society who succeeds and submits their ZERO GARBAGE CONTEST ENTRY FORM at our
office will get a bonus token cash prize (double), besides the Rotating Trophy.
6. The trophy will be rotated to the housing societies who succeed subsequently (and inform our office).
Procedure mentioned in no. 3 above will be repeated each time.
7. Please note – you have to do only segregation. If you go a step further by doing composting, bio-gas etc and
prevent even the wet waste going to the dumping grounds, your society will get further appreciation.
8. For practical purpose, this contest is open only to the housing societies of Jogeshwari parish.
9. For further details on ,’ why zero garbage’, which is wet and dry waste etc. see overleaf.
10. When all the families of your society succeed in segregating the waste, please submit the ZERO GARBAGE
CONTEST FORM which is at the bottom of page 2 (see reverse)

WHY ZERO GARBAGE PROJECT AT ALL?
AThe dumping grounds of garbage are fast depleting.
ALot of scarce land is used to dump the garbage.
ACrores of tax payers’ money is used to transport the garbage to the dumping grounds.
AThe improper processing of garbage at the dumping grounds creates a number of health hazards to
the neighbouring residents.
AThe garbage thrown on the roadside, especially plastic causes floods in the rainy season.
AThe stray dogs survive from the food from the roadside garbage, and creates lot of menace.
AMishandled garbage becomes breeding ground for mosquitoes which causes diseases like Dengue and
Malaria.
4. AThe garbage thrown on the roadside, especially plastic causes floods in the rainy season.
AThe unhygienic handling of the garbage at the housing societies are injurious to the health of the society
sweepers/workers.
AFinally the wealth from waste (wet garbage) which could have produced valuable manure is lost
forever.
A Following classification of wet and dry waste is just an example to help you
1. DRY GARBAGE

Dear members,
During the last Managing Committee meeting, it has been decided to start ZERO GARBAGE
PROJECT in our housing society starting from ____. Each flat (household) will be provided
with 2 bins with different colours, one for dry waste and one for wet. On day today basis,
please put all your household and kitchen waste in respective bins (for details about wet and
dry garbage see overleaf).
Every morning place both the bins outside your door. The society workers/sweepers will
collect your dry and wet waste separately in their bigger bins. All the wet waste collected from
the residents will be given to the BMC Ghanta ghadis, and the dry waste will be stored in the
society rooms. The managing committee will enter into sale contract of dry garbage with a
scrape dealer. The money collected will be used to give incentive for the society workers for
their extra work and/or used for other purposes decided by the managing committee (as you
know, at present both wet and dry garbage is mixed and taken by the ghanta ghadis for
dumping ground, losing the income which would have earned from the dry waste).
For your information, as per the BMC rules and Supreme Court order, it is compulsory for the
housing societies to segregate their garbage at source (household level). Therefore, we
request for your full cooperation and support in implementing these rules, besides helping us
to make our housing society a GREEN SOCIETY and for a clean environment.
Thanking you
Signed/Chairman
