If you're in the C-Suite, an human resources or facilities design professional or facilities manager you will find this presentation valuable in enhancing your leadership efforts.
What are the secrets to designing great offices and workplaces while cultivating active, engaged cultures? In this presentation we share best practices to help energize your workplace, improve attraction and retention all the while telling your brand story, connecting to greater sustainability initiatives and more.
Your people are your biggest expenses. You can improve engagement and productivity by tuning your office design to the DNA of your business, your mission, purpose and core values. We call this the values driven design framework. We learn together about your DNA, what makes your company go and your vision for success, your mission and core values. We take that information and identify best practices in workplace design strategies to optimize collaboration and an innovation mindset while providing much needed private, focus spaces, meeting areas and individual work areas.
Some trends we think vital to pay attention to are:
1. Get your people moving: Providing a wide range of sit to stand options at workstations and work areas, to battle the rising obesity epidemic at work. This helps keep your teams moving.
2. Choices at Work: Provide a wide range of open to more private work areas matched to differing modes of work needing to be done by your people. This includes small one to two person phone booths or huddle rooms, to informal backyard areas, front yard areas, high top worksurfaces shared by a workgroup, as well as individual workstations.
3. Bring nature near. Numerous studies show the presence of indoor plants and so call living walls promote worker wellbeing and enhance productivity. Balance interior planting with access to outdoor work areas or "work terraces", walking paths for exercise and walking meetings. See item 1. Get your people moving.

Digital Art & Design for HCMS Future Business Leaders of AmericaBen Capozzi
This is a brief presentation I made to the Halifax County Middle School Future Business Leaders of America in January. Very smart kids and a real pleasure to visit with them!
Media and Design encompass both the old guard of television and advertising as well as the new giants of social media, big data and design-as-business core. This mini-symposium explores the synergies and contractions inherent in 21st Century careers in Media and Design, including: To be or not to be (irreverent); How to be street smart and business savvy; Who decides what gets created; and What’s Ethical: The Valorized Designer/Director.
The document discusses how the context for designing productivity experiences has changed dramatically over the last 15 years. A new generation of digital native users is becoming dominant in the workplace, representing a cultural shift that should evolve productivity experiences to better fit new user needs, take advantage of new technical capabilities and opportunities. It provides tips for designing productivity experiences, including meeting users where they are, showing rather than telling, creating a seamless path from trying to buying products, making products provide everyday value, and supporting users through upgrades and help in the ways they prefer.
This document contains contact information and skills for an interior designer, architect and graphic designer. It lists software proficiencies including AutoCAD Architecture, Revit, and Adobe Creative Suite. Examples of event planning work are provided including corporate celebrations for new babies and a bridal shower. Contact information is given to inquire about design and event planning services.

These slides were a part of a presentation given at DIYDays Conference on March 3rd in NYC at The New School. Most of the participants at the conference were story tellers and were interested in how to better work with technology to tell a story. Our goal was to help them know when in a project to start to work with a technologist, what to expect and where to find them.
The document provides information about a graphic designer including their skills, education, and work experience. It includes a link to view examples of their work in various categories. The designer has a bachelor's degree in graphic design and has worked on projects such as developing a cookbook app and interned creating graphics for their university's athletic department. The love of making things need not be confined to the physical world - electronic form giving is an equal hands-on experience. My talk is investigation of the possibility of craft in the digital realm. There is a growing correspondence between digital work and traditional craft. Anyone who gives form with software, whether in web design, architecture, motion graphics or modeling, is practicing personal knowledge and producing visual artifacts that, although not material, are nevertheless products of the hands, eyes and mind.
The talk stars with an introduction to my current role at The Group, thoughts on the Bauhaus movement (and their understanding of craft & technology) and concludes with interviews by various digital crafts people.
Design Designen was created for the 6. Typotage in Munich which took place on 21. July 2009.

“What Vegans Eat” for Halifax County-South Boston Public Library—Mar 2015Ben Capozzi
This presentation is the second, expanded version of my talk of the same name originally delivered for Pechakucha Night Roanoke in 2014.
My goal for the presentation is to share that eating well without animals is not only possible, but it is JOYFUL. My presentation is free of images of animal cruelty, not because i don't care about those things, but because I choose to put forward the positive side of an animal free diet. Strict vegans may find my moderation offensive, but most of the people I know and love are not vegan and I aim for the common ground, not the dividing line.
The resignation is lighthearted and humorous throughout and includes recommended cook books, the health benefits I've experienced, and common food situations “veganized.”
This is the first in a 4-part series I've developed for the library. The others are “Yard=Garden—What We've Done for Food and for Fun,” “What Permaculture Is, Isn't, and What's in it for You,” and “Compositing 101: From Manure to Obscure.”

In June 2014 the Southside Master Gardeners Association awarded me a scholarship to attend the 27th Annual MG College program at my alma mater, Virginia Tech. I had an amazing time, took 35 pages of notes, attending fascinating lectures, looked at management of the land through controlled burning, and started my training as a Virginia Land Care steward. The following September it was my pleasure to share with the MGs what I learned in a fast-paced, lighthearted, and grateful presentation.

Composting: A Tour of Techniques From Manure to ObscureBen Capozzi
Here's my presentation from a November 2014 public lecture on composting. I've had many requests for copies of this!
Invited by the Southside Virginia Master Gardeners Association, I pulled together material from my training as an MG, but also lots more from my certificates in Permaculture and the Soil Food Web. My goals were 1) to share enthusiasm for this eco-friendly practice, 2) take the apprehension out of the process, and 3) encourage systems-level thinking to reduce, re-use, and recycle yard waste. We can keep good biological matter and carbon out of our landfills and use their nutrients to build soil life in our own backyards.
Based on feedback afterwards, I seem to have done a pretty good job.
“Design Basics,” a VPI CNRE guest lectureBen Capozzi
Twice now, I have been invited to speak with students in the Packaging Design curriculum in Virginia Tech's College of Natural Resources and the Environment. These are non-graphic design students who focus mainly on materials, and I was asked to give them an overview of design basics and some of the tools. I also included some general notes on creativity, observation, and resources, AND some in-class exercises to stimulate creativity adapted from Edward de Bono. I often include images of the Great Pacific Trash Gyres in my presentations in order to place the need for good design —from concept to execution in all phases of a product's life— foremost in student minds.

The document also quotes Howard Lyman, a former rancher and dairyman who is now a vegan animal advocate, as saying no animal has to die for him to live and that makes him feel good.

It outlines the curriculum for associate's degrees and certificates across these fields, as well as collaborative courses where students from different programs work together. The goal is to train students with skills for the innovation economy, like creative thinking, collaboration, and entrepreneurship, through project-based learning. Partnerships between the Southside Virginia Higher Education Center and other local organizations are also mentioned.
