The LA Grid Initiative aims to develop collaboration and technology for hurricane mitigation through education, research, and talent development using high performance computing. It has helped develop collaboration networks and technology for disaster prediction since 2006. Better prediction models are needed to generate evacuation plans with finer-grained and timely predictions that can leverage federated computing resources like grids and clouds. The Weather Research and Forecasting model portal provides on-demand runs for meteorologists but performance must be increased for cloud computing. Challenges include supporting application-agnostic and platform-independent performance prediction for multicore and virtualized environments.
