HEALTHY HYGIENE HABITS AT SCHOOL
HOW DO GERMS SPREAD AT SCHOOL?
• Children mixing with lots of other children will expose him or her to many more
germs.
• School children often pick up cold and flu viruses or tummy bugs that can lead to
Diarrhoea.
• Infections can spread very quickly from child to child by touching a contaminated
surface.
• Germs also spread very quickly in the air via coughs and sneezes, as well as by
eating contaminated food.
WHY GOOD HYGIENE IMPORTANT AT SCHOOL?
• A neat and clean school promotes a good attitude in everyone.
• Attitude plays a crucial role in child development and learning. If the school is clean and people are
happier spreads positivity.
• Dirt and grime promote the spread of germs, which can also encourage the spread of communicable
diseases. The school ensure that children and teachers don’t get sick.
• School thoroughly cleaned, and surfaces need to be wiped down and sanitized on a regular basis.
Without a clean environment, bacteria and other dangerous germs will occur.
• When a school is clean and tidy, it shows pride in the school itself. This reflects on the attitude of staff
members and children too.
Tips for good school hygiene practices
1. KEEP HANDS CLEAN
Thorough hand washing is the most effective way to help prevent the spread of infections in
schools. Teach the children how and when to wash their hands, Always wash hands:
• After using the toilet
• Before eating
• After playing outside
• After coughing, sneezing or blowing their nose
• Whenever hands look dirty
2. COUGHS AND SNEEZES SPREAD DISEASES
Teach the children to cover their nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing to stop germs
from becoming airborne.
3. HEALTHY DIET
An ideal lunchbox for children focuses on necessary dietary supplements rather than candy bars or
biscuits. The lunchbox should contain fruits and food from each of the five main groups. It should include
immunity-boosting food for children.
4. DRINK PLENTY OF WATER
Encourage the children to drink plenty of water throughout the day, as even slight dehydration can lead to
poor concentration, lethargy, irritability and headaches.
Prevent the spread of germs in school by following steps
• Keep school bags clean and free from food, especially if the child carries a packed lunch to
school
• Make sure children change their socks and underwear daily
• Wash school uniforms on a high temperature to kill bacteria
• Try to prepare food fresh each day, as there will be less opportunity for germs to grow
