Health-care waste is a by-product of health care. Its poor management exposes health-care workers, waste handlers and the community to infections, toxic effects and injuries including damage of the environment. It also creates opportunities for the collection of disposable medical equipment, its re-sale and potential re-use without sterilization, which causes an important burden of disease worldwide. The purpose of this study was to find out health care waste management practice in hospital.

It includes:

Health care waste management systems enable health care waste to be managed
responsibly, without harming the community or the environment.

9. The mismanagement of healthcare waste
poses risks to :
people and the environment
Healthcare workers,
patients,
waste handlers,
waste pickers, and
the general public are exposed to health risks from
infectious waste (particularly sharps), chemicals, and other
special HCW. Improper disposal of special HCW, including
open dumping and uncontrolled burning, increases the risk of
spreading infections and of exposure to toxic emissions from
incomplete combustion. For these reasons, occupational health
and safety should be a component of HCW management
plans.

• 75-90% is similar to domestic waste. This fraction
referred to as healthcare general waste (HCGW)
is made of paper, plastic packaging, food
preparation, etc. that haven't been in contact
with patients.
• 10-25% is infectious/ hazardous waste that
requires special treatment. This fraction referred
to as healthcare risk waste (HCRW) is the one
this website focuses on due to the risks that it
poses both to human health and the
environment.

buried out of the hospital compound.
The burial area is at the back of Jimma air port.
 This is done by agreement between Jimma city
municipality leaders and the hospital
administrators( by taking permission from jimma
zone court as we got information)

Conclusion
As we observed and interviewed some Hospital
Sanitarians, health care waste management in
Jimma University Specialized Hospital(JUSH) is
not in a good manner and needs some design
modification for example incinerator.

We would like to recommend the Hospital:
 Location of the incinerator must be a bit far from wards
and main road to Jiren
 To Design good Incinerator
 Waste segregation
 Waste container labeling in the ward
 To not discharge wastes from x-ray room to main sewer
line
 To avoid open dumping like wastes those causes nuisance
