HAZOP is a technique for hazard and operability studies. It was pioneered in the 1960s by Imperial Chemical Industries to assess risks. A HAZOP evaluates potential deviations from the design intent of parts of a plant called nodes, using guide words. For example, a day tank node transferring liquid to a plant would be analyzed for deviations like less or more liquid, reverse flow. Mitigations are identified for each deviation. HAZOPs are used in industries like chemicals and oil/gas and require a trained team and leader to identify hazards.
