As it specifically relates to in-venue connectivity, following an upgrade of their DAS system (distributed antenna
system), the Packers began evaluating Wi-Fi solutions with the goal of delivering seamless connectivity to support
the increasing number of guest devices expecting Wi-Fi in-stadium, as well as supporting the Packers’ key business
functions relying on the wired and wireless network. Faced with installing high-density Wi-Fi in an open-air stadium
that encompasses 1,695,000 square feet and holds 81,441 people, it was crucial for the Packers to find a vendor with
past experience and demonstrated success installing Wi-Fi solutions in the most demanding stadium environments.
In their search for a networking partner, the Packers evaluated all major wireless LAN vendors in the space. Staffed with just a two-person network management team, it was important to work with one vendor who could provide a total end-to-end solution to simplify installation and maintenance. In addition, the following components were key to the
Packers’ evaluation criteria:
• The overall cost of implementing the solution, and the
timeframe for implementation
• The expertise and prior experience of the installation
and support team
• The sheer technological capabilities of the solution and
past successes in similar markets

EXTR Solution (above), and solution value/results of the install:
Customized network solution to meet digital expectations of fans, specific goals of the business, and unique characteristics of the stadium – without compromising historic integrity of the venue.
High-density Wi-Fi connectivity delivering complete, reliable coverage for guests and detailed Wi-Fi analytics of network performance and mobile engagements.
Complete support and enablement of critical business functions, event management assets, and fan-facing services in and around the stadium.
Wi-Fi Coach Program for in-person onboarding, service, and support for fans accessing the network
Since deploying Extreme’s solutions in 2015, the number of Packers fans connecting to Wi-Fi at Lambeau Field has grown from 20 to over 50 percent of fans at the 80,000-fan capacity stadium during the first games of the 2018 season. From the initial deployment to today, data transferred over the network has also doubled to over 5 terabytes.
All areas supporting critical business functions and event management – ITPV for displays, digital signage and messaging, security
systems, ticketing, concessions, POS devices, and staff iPhones rely on the network to function and operate during games and events.
Additional Notes
Careful site surveys and planning exercises, as well as monitoring and fine-tuning (post install) were required to fully optimized the Wi-Fi implementation, ensuring full coverage and capacity.
Since Lambeau Field is a historical landmark the integrity and character of stadium needed to be maintained. As an example, the inner seating bowl at Lambeau Field is the only NFL stadium that still has metal bleachers. This creates challenges for effective places to place and mount wireless APs, in addition to the density challenges and planning inherent in these deployments. It also created visual/aesthetic challenges, since the Packers didn’t want the networking technology to disrupt the excitement and tradition of attending an NFL game.
APs were strategically mounted over the seating bowl and covertly within custom-built boxes throughout the stands, painted with Packers’ green and yellow so they’re nearly invisible to the typical fan, but still pack serious Wi-Fi punch. There are over 1,200 APs deployed throughout the venue and outside of it.

From the initial deployment to today, data transferred over the network has also doubled to over 5 terabytes. Additionally, in preparation for the Packers’ 100 Seasons Experience, the team expanded its Wi-Fi network to include Titletown – a center near Lambeau Field that offers shopping, restaurants and activities for fans – as well as the Lambeau Field parking lots, enabling fans to engage before, during and after Packers home games. Mobile ticketing at the stadium also enables fans to enter the game quickly without missing a beat.
