3. WHAT ARE TRIBALS?
Tribal is the expression used in
India to refer to people known in
another place as indigenous.
The British ethnographers termed
tribals as animists.
As per National Census, they are
categorized as “aboriginals" and
scheduled according to the tribe. In
Hindi, tribal is known as adivasi,
denoted as "ancient inhabitants”.

traditional rituals and superstitious. They are friendly and
jovial lot wo are industrious and diligent. Although shrouded
in poverty, they live life to the hilt and love to celebrate every
joyous occasion. Food, drink, music, dance, mirth and
merriment add colours to their lives. The tribal women also
learn to adorn themselves.

17. Social Reformer of
Chhattisgarh
Soni Sori iborn in year 1975 is an Adivasi school teacher turned
political leader of Aam Aadmi Party in Sameli village of Dantewada
in south Bastar, Chhattisgarh, India.
She as arrested by the Delhi Police's Crime Branch for Chhattisgarh
Police in 2011 on charges of acting as a conduit for Maoists. During
her imprisonment, she was tortured and sexually assaulted by
Chhattisgarh state police. By April 2013, the Indian Courts had
acquitted her in six of the eight cases filed against her due to lack of
evidence.
After release from prison, Sori began campaigning for the rights of
those caught up in the conflict between Maoist insurgents and the
government, in particular criticising police violence against
tribespeople in the region.
