Harmony OS in the IoT
Written By Calio Huang
The current keyword about Huawei is no longer 5G, but Harmony OS. This word in the Chinese
mythology means "opening the earth", the name of the operating system released by Huawei at
the "Developers Conference" held on August 9.
On August 9, Huawei released Harmony OS.
The news that Huawei will release this operating system has been rumored for a long time, but
the versions are different. Some people say that it is a mobile operating system that will replace
Android, and some people deny that it will only be used in the industrial field.
Yu Chengdong’s position on Harmony OS at the press conference denied these rumors. "Today's
operating systems are for different platforms (designed), mobile phones have mobile phone
operating systems, watches have watch operating systems, and car machines have car operating
systems." He said, and Harmony OS's "self-requirements "It is to break the wall between the
devices - it will support multiple devices such as large screens, wearables, car machines, speakers,
watches, mobile phones, PCs, etc.
Yu Chengdong is the CEO of Huawei's consumer business. He together with Fuchsia, which
Google is developing, is called “the next-generation operating system” – facing the Internet of
Things era. Under his division, the PC system represented by Windows is the first generation of
residents in the history of operating systems. The mobile Internet operating system represented
by Android and iOS is the second generation.
It is an ancient desire to open the wall between the devices, but the computer has been born for
more than 70 years, and this desire has not yet been realized. And what step has Huawei gone
through in the 7-year development of Harmony OS?

What is Harmony?
At the press conference on August 9th, Yu Chengdong gave a demonstration to show what a
mobile phone loaded with Harmony OS system and the Dajiang UAV that also loaded the system
could do: the host stood at the podium of the conference. Holding a mobile phone and having a
video call with a Huawei employee outside the venue, the host on the spot expressed the hope
that a glance at the video of the DJI drone that the off-site person was operating was
immediately From the face of the off-site person to the view that the aerial drone is overlooking.
Another video demonstrates a similar application scenario: a woman asks a friend for advice on
wearing a mobile video call, dissatisfied with the phone screen being too small, she touches the
phone to the TV screen, and the video screen is taken from the phone screen in the next second.
Turned to the TV screen - this time the camera of the TV was called.
“In the past, devices were able to connect, but they were separated from each other when the
application was actually running. Harmony could make multiple hardware stacks and become a
super device,” said Wang Chengdu, president of Huawei Consumer Business Software. Multi-end
interconnection is the core function of Harmony. Huawei calls Harmony OS the so-called
"distributed architecture."
In addition to family scenes, Huawei also plans to expand it to travel, sports, office and other
fields.
For example, after connecting through an NFC (Near Field Communication Technology), the user
can display the mobile phone screen completely on the computer screen. Unlike simple
screencasting, users under the Harmony OS system can use the mouse to operate the phone on
the computer screen, or vice versa. The two systems can interact like the two documents of a
system. Wang Chenglu claimed that the current nailing and WPS have supported such a
drag-and-drop function.
The interaction between hardware doesn't sound new. Apple's AirDrop feature is intended to
achieve this goal, allowing Apple devices that are also part of the iOS system to "deliver" files
through this feature. However, Huawei's Harmony OS is a completely different thing - AirDrop is
an application based on Bluetooth transmission technology, and Harmony OS is an operating
system, which can drive device A to control device B, and AirDrop cannot.
In the existing architecture of Harmony OS, the kernel part still includes the "Linux kernel", but Yu
Chengdong claims that Harmony OS has the potential to do multi-screen interaction because it
replaces Android and iOS with "microkernel" in the operating system. Macro kernel" (ie single
core).
The key difference between "macro kernel" and "microkernel" is the degree of integration.
In 1991, when Linus Torvalds, a 21-year-old student in the Department of Computer Science at
the University of Helsinki in Finland, wrote a Linux system, he placed process management,
device drivers, and file systems into the operating system's management center, the kernel. Then
the Android and iOS systems based on the open-source code of Linus Torvalds adopted this
kernel - the macro kernel.
Harmony OS takes out the programs such as device drivers and file systems from the kernel. The
kernel only retains resource management programs that handle basic functions such as time,
memory, communication, and interrupts. Because of the lower level of integration, this smaller

management center is called a microkernel.
Programs such as device drivers and file systems are taken out of the kernel and placed outside
the application layer as separate modules. This architecture makes it easier for kernels from other
hardware to call these modules - as long as the kernel is in front of the hardware. Send a credit
application. This collaborative mechanism builds the foundation for close interaction between
devices.
It sounds like this ability to control each other across devices is exactly what the Internet of
Things era needs: devices are terminals and mutual peripherals. When needed, anyone of them
can be the gateway for human-computer interaction.
However, the solution from the concept of "opening hardware devices" to "replace the macro
core with microkernels" is not the first proposed by Huawei. Google is also developing a similar
operating system and is starting up earlier.
According to Yu Chengdong’s statement at the press conference on the same day, Huawei started
the development of Harmony OS in 2017. In August 2016, a code appeared on GitHub in the
code-sharing community, showing that Google is developing a new operating system called
"Fuchsia," whose source code has been tested to run across platforms including "car
entertainment media systems and embedding." Devices, such as traffic lights, digital watches,
smartphones, tablets, and personal computers, etc. on multiple platforms.
At the Google Developers Conference in May this year, Google Senior Vice President Hiroshi
Lockheimer confirmed the existence of this project. “It’s not just mobile phones and personal
computers. In the world of IoT, more and more devices require support from operating systems
and new software operating environments. I think that in many operating systems with different
advantages and specializations. There is a lot of room for development. Fuchsia is one of them,"
he said.
A variety of hardware including Huawei's glory Play phones have been tested by Fuchsia OS, and
the saying "Android is dead" has also appeared in various forums and media layouts.
But Google has not officially released this operating system so far. In fact, whether Fuchsia is an
independent operating system that will completely replace Android is still possible. According to
Hiroshi Lockheimer, "The outside people are very excited to say 'Oh! This is the new Android', or
'This is the new Chrome'. In fact, this is not the case. Fuchsia is just to promote operating system
technology. Develop so that we can learn from it and integrate it into other products."
In other words, either improve Android or replace Android - this is Google's two choices for
next-generation operating system technology. It has not made a decision yet. However, according
to foreign media reports, Fuchsia equipment will support down compatible Android applications
in the future.
Does Huawei have the best chance?
The new players in the operating system market are not just Huawei. In the Chinese market alone,
Alibaba and Tencent have developed YunOS and TOS respectively.
But Huawei may be the company with the most conditions to do this. The first is its number of
intelligent terminal users exceeding 500 million. "If Huawei launches the Harmony OS system
mobile phone, at least domestic developers will definitely adapt." Fan Huiqi, a partner of the
Chinese mobile game, told Yimaggine of China Business News. Huawei is currently the mobile

phone brand with the most market share in China.
In the development experience of the operating system, Huawei is also the earliest and most
comprehensive among the domestic technology giants.
As early as 1991, Huawei, which is still engaged in the switch business, began to develop the
operating system of the switch. The person in charge of R&D is Xu Wenwei, the Huawei veteran
and the current president of Huawei Strategic Research Institute. At the time, there was no
ready-made open-source operating system on the market. It is said that Xu Wenwei's code was
written from the first line. In the same year, Linus Torvalds in Northern Europe just wrote the
prototype of the first kernel of Linux.
In 2007, Huawei also successfully implemented a real-time operating system based on the
open-source Linux kernel. Later, Huawei also developed a cloud server based on the Linux kernel.
The launch of Huawei's mobile operating system can also be traced back seven years. According
to a "Jun Zhe and 2012 Laboratory Cadres and Experts Symposium Minutes", on July 2012, Ren
Zhengfei met with dozens of R&D leaders. Li Jinxi, then the head of Huawei's terminal OS
development department, asked at the time: "Android, iOS and Windows Phone 8 are
three-legged, forming their own ecosystems. The opportunity window for other terminal OSs is
already very small. What expectations and requirements does the company have for the terminal
operating system?"
Ren Zhengfei replied: "We do the operating system, and it is the same as doing high-end chips. It
is mainly to let others allow us to use it, not to break our food. When we break our food, the
backup system should be able to use it."
"2012 Lab" is the leading-edge technology research department established after Ren Zhengfei
saw the movie "2012". He envisioned that the future data flow would make the communication
pipeline become as thick as it needs to build a Noah's Ark to survive.
Ren Zhengfei has a set of “pipeline theory”. Both the Pacific Ocean and the Yellow River, the
Yangtze River, and the city's water network are all pipes, and various terminals are taps. He
acknowledged Apple's vertical integration and believes that Huawei should also be vertically
integrated into its business strategy – alongside pipeline integration.
Under the pipeline theory, the operating system is an indispensable part of Huawei's vertical
integration strategy. And Ren Zhengfei's philosophy, if the core of the technology is algorithms
and logic, Huawei can work hard. The operating system also belongs to this problem.
Wang Chengdu, currently president of Huawei's consumer business software, was the president
of Huawei's core network product line. After the establishment of the central software
department of the 2012 lab, he was transferred to the position of president of the department
and launched the research of Harmony OS.
Why is the hardware "first show" TV?
On August 10, the day after Yu Chengdong released the Harmony OS operating system, glory CEO
Zhao Ming released the first hardware equipped with Harmony OS system in the same stadium -
the glory wisdom screen.
One of the functional demonstrations of the Glory Smart Screen.
Previously, the industry voice generally believed that Huawei will soon release a mobile
phone-based on the Harmony OS system. Because once the US government bans Huawei from

using Google's Android system due to Sino-US trade frictions, Huawei's 500 million end users
worldwide will face the dilemma that the system cannot be updated.
"Glory wisdom screen product planning is just at this (development Harmony OS) time point, we
just caught up with this time point." Zhao Ming said in the media group interview after the press
conference.
From the appearance, this TV with the Harmony OS operating system is no different from the
ordinary flat-panel TV, except that there is a camera on the top of the screen that can
automatically raise and lower when entering the videophone mode. The camera is said to have
functions such as face recognition, human eye tracking, and motion detection. At the same time,
it also has the voice interaction function of the smart speaker at the present stage - even
shouting "YOYO" twice, this TV will respond according to the user's voice instructions.
Alternatively, you can connect your phone to the screen via NFC technology.
In terms of content, it currently only supports 4 major video applications such as Huawei Video,
Cool, Mango TV, and Aurora TV. The video applications such as iQiyi, Youku and Tencent Video are
not among them. The TV is priced at 4,799 yuan, nearly 2,000 yuan higher than the same size as
the millet TV.
The price of two glory smart screens.
However, how many units it can sell in the short term is not the most important for Huawei. Its
more important value to Huawei is to test and iterate the Harmony OS system and accumulate
application ecology.
"Smart screen is better than the mobile phone. Today it is still relatively small. We can have
enough time to polish one application after another. This also gives us a lot of buffering time."
Zhao Ming said that Harmony OS operating system is the application on the terminal is first of all
big-screen products and wearable devices. The new system is only a "second choice" for mobile
phone products.
From the spare tire to the protagonist, how far is it?
Huawei grabbed the operating system in front of Google, and this action was actually ahead of
schedule. “Huawei originally planned to release Harmony OS in the spring of 2020, but the
Sino-US trade war has accelerated this process.” Yu Chengdong said in a media group interview
after the press conference that Huawei’s R&D personnel involved in the development of
operating systems have rapidly expanded. To nearly 5,000 people, "the whole system will be
perfected in the short term, so the workload is very large."
On May 15 this year, Huawei was included in the “entity list” by the United States. Later, chip
suppliers including Intel and Qualcomm were required to supply Huawei only after obtaining the
permission of the US Department of Commerce. One week later, on May 21, Google with Android
also received this order.
The release of Harmony OS is the result of rushing work. Although Yu Chengdong claimed that
Harmony OS's microkernel ideas have been formalized by mathematical methods, formal
verification and actual interaction tests are two different things.
It is worth noting that the microkernel is a technical concept that has existed for a long time but
continues to be controversial.
"What's really complicated in reality is interaction, not independent modules." As the earliest

author of the Linux kernel, Linus Torvalds said in an interview with the media in 2011 that the
idea of the microkernel is just "sounds good, in reality." It will fail." His reason is that although the
logic of the microkernel can improve the interaction efficiency between devices, it is at the cost
of reducing the information interaction inside the device.
Wu Jun, the author of "The Wave of the Waves", proposed that neither Humen nor Fuchsia is
mature - it is impossible to mature. In a paid question and answer in early August, he said that
the relationship between the processor and the operating system is the relationship between
hardware and software, so the most difficult problem is the adaptability: "ARM processor is
synchronously coordinated with Android at design time. Therefore, the coupling degree is very
high, and other operating systems running on the ARM processor cannot achieve the efficiency of
Android."
At the Huawei 2019 Developers Conference, which just ended on August 11, according to
Huawei's official introduction, there are 1,500 eco-collaborators and more than 5,000 global
developers gathered together. However, from the interview of the first news of the "First
Finance" YiMagazine reporter, many participants have witnessed the grand release of Harmony
OS OS, but they are still confused about how they can participate in the development of
ecological applications in the future.
Huawei is responsible for explaining the Harmony OS system. Most of them are business leaders
in charge of business and strategy, not scientists in the R&D line. They are standing on the stage
and preaching more of the logic of Harmony OS’s product logic. The mouth is full of smoothness.
Safe such a description.
Yu Chengdong claimed that the development workload of migrating the Android ecosystem
application to Harmony OS system is “very small” and can be completed in a day or two with
Huawei's Ark compiler. At the press conference, more than 40 applications including Taobao,
Tmall, QQ, Today's headlines, etc. have completed this compilation work, but for the tens of
thousands of Android application market, this number is still too small.
Moreover, this will not be a "one time in place" migration.
"The demand for telecom equipment software is relatively clear and convergent. More than 70%
of the needs of hundreds of operators around the world are almost the same. The software for
consumers is very different." Wang Cheng recorded in Huawei in May. The Xinsheng community
issued a document saying that Android iteration has not solved the problem of long-term use.
Wu Jun revealed that before 2019, Harmony’s positioning was indeed a mobile operating system
as an alternative to Android. Therefore, it is also unknown whether it can actually operate in
industrial equipment in the future. Huawei has not demonstrated how it works in industrial
scenarios during the three-day developer conference.
At the moment, other brands can't join Harmony's IoT system, only when they make changes on
the underlying operating system. When it comes to other brands, it is no longer a technical issue.
The ecological story developed around the operating system will eventually become a business
issue.
