Challenge : Bring Sustainability into Food Production and Produce Best Quality Products Possible
Keeping cows happy and healthy is the
driving mission of Happy Cow Creamery.
It’s the key to success in the dairy and
creamery business. But it’s not an easy
job.
The major challenges are warehouse
temperature control, cattle feed
management and lagoon management.
Warehouse Temperature Control: The ability to
constantly (24/7) monitor and control the
temperatures of freezers and coolers in the
warehouses used to store the dairy’s products as the
slightest glitch in the equipment could cause disaster,
spoil products and lead to the loss of thousands of
dollars.
Feeding Systems: Keeping the cows well fed and
ensuring a consistent supply of feeds is vital.
Lagoon Management: Carefully monitor and manage
the lagoon levels and eliminate the risk of negative
environmental impacts, such as an overflowing lagoon
that could attract fines.

Solution: Sensor Technology
The Hitachi team worked with Happy Cow Creamery for
a 24/7 warehouse temperature control solution
using Hitachi HiQ eSystems products.
The HiQ eSystems Glacier sensors monitor temperature
levels in coolers and freezers, and the HiQ eSystems
Access System provides automated alerts as needed.
Now, employees at Happy Cow Creamery can pull up the
dashboard on a phone or computer and see the current
temperature of the product, and receive proactive alerts
if there’s a problem.

Solution: Sustainable Lagoon Management
The solution to the problem of an overflowing lagoon is Hitachi’s Digital Lagoon Monitoring System,
which is based on sensor technology.
The sensors can send alerts when the lagoon reaches the point where it needs to be pumped down,
and this can be diverted to the fields to fertilize them, saving the purchase of fertilizer.
The lagoon performs the dual task of storing the waste generated from the dairy’s cows while converting
the waste into a form of natural fertilizer to apply to the farm’s pastures.

Solution: Automating Feeding Systems & Supply Chain
To keep the cows happy, they must be
well fed. To do this, a feed bin sensor was
implemented to notify feed buyers when
they need to order a new batch of feed,
or to connect with the feed supplier when
it's time for delivery.
Automating the cattle feeding system and
supply chain makes for an efficient and
environmentally friendly operation and
reduces the effort and errors involved in
manually monitoring the feed supply.

Result : Improved Agricultural Processes and Operational Capabilities
Happy Cow Creamery's dairy products now have a longer shelf life as the milk stays
very cold and fresh due to Warehouse Freezer & Cooler Temperature Control Sensors.
Hitachi's ability to take sensor data, combine it with other data sources and model it
also enables Happy Cow Creamery address environmental risks related to issues such
as overflowing lagoons or animal health issues that could negatively impact the
environment.
Hitachi’s collaboration with Happy Cow Creamery has played an important role in the
advancement of smart agriculture solutions. Hitachi creates custom sensors, involving
a lot of trial and error in trying different technologies to find the perfect solution for its
customers, and this collaboration was no different.
