Language targets –to express “我有 wǒ yǒu”- I have
wǒ yǒu bǐ.
我 有 笔。
I have (a) pen.
The word ‘有 yǒu’ is sometimes translated as ‘have or has’ and sometimes
as ‘there is’ or ‘there are’. It is worth noting this as an example that
there is not always an exact word-for-word correspondence between languages.
In class task: To work in pair and talk to your friend what stationary you have in
your pencil case.
Language targets –to express
“我没有 wǒ méi yǒu ”- I don’t have
wǒ méi yǒu Chǐzi.
我 没 有 尺子。
I don’t have (a) ruler.
To express something that we don’t have in Chinese that is ‘没有
méi yǒu’. 没 méi means no, non or don’t in this sentence structure
(or doesn’t).
In class task: To work in pair and talk to your friend what
stationary you don’t have in your pencil case.
To express “和 hè” - and
wǒ yǒu bǐ, qiānbi hè chizi.
我 有 笔, 铅笔 和 尺子。
I have (a) pen, pencil and ruler.
The word ‘和 hè’ and only joins lists of pronouns, nouns or noun phrases and
never clauses. It is seldom used to connect 2 verbs. It usually comes
between the last 2 nouns in a series (as example above).
In class task: To work in pair and talk to your friend what stationary you have in
your pencil case by using this sentence structure above.
Ways of asking a question-
• There are 2 ways to make questions in Chinese. By adding
- 什么?Shén me? What?
- 吗?Ma?
Examples:
铅笔盒有什么?Qiānbǐ hé yǒu shénme?

你有 ………..吗?Nǐ yǒu……….. Ma?
Do you have…?
你有 尺子吗?Nǐ yǒu chǐzi ma?
Do you have a ruler?

• If you replay 有yǒu have , which means you have 尺子 this
item
• If you replay没 有 méi yǒu don’t/doesn’t have, which means
you don’t have 尺子 this item
