This document discusses open data and how it reflects a cultural shift towards a more open and transparent society. It provides examples of how open data is used, such as Wikipedia and messaging services. It then discusses the Heritage and Culture challenge run by the Open Data Institute (ODI) and Nesta to use open data to engage more people in UK heritage and culture. It provides details on the challenge winners and judging criteria, which included innovation, social impact, and sustainability. The document concludes by outlining the ODI's Data as Culture art program which commissions art to consider social and ethical implications of data through exhibitions, residencies, and partnerships.

As everything becomes data-driven, key question is: not how do we visualise it, but what does it mean?
How do we apply equal weight and consideration to architecture of online space as to the built environment?
How do we build trust in networked society to explore new forms of knowledge, and more?
Information and data are malleable and open to interpretation

A rundown but functional old vending machine stands alone. Every now and again, without warning, it springing into life - spewing out free packets of crisps for gallery visitors.
The machine has been modified. and longer functions in the conventional way - at the whim of snack-hungry people
Now, it continually scans the news on the BBC News RSS feed - commanding the machine only to release snacks when words relating to the recession make the headlines.
Whilst seemingly an act of generosity - gifting free food at moments when further doom and gloom is reported - the Vending Machine also hints towards a time in the future when our access to food may literally be determined by wider political or environmental events.
How do we consume data now?
Thomson & Craighead’s work raises questions about what it means to aggregate and interconnect large bodies of information, inviting reflection on how mechanisms like the World Wide Web, alter, extend and distort our understanding of the world around us.
They’re keen observers of the ways in which people interact with these new spaces, whose materials include found YouTube footage, search terms and extracted texts from individual and corporate contributors to online media.
In decorative newsfeeds Live news headlines from around the world are transformed into algorithmically drawn animated lines that create unique pathways across the screen.
As different headlines travel across each other, original meanings and implications are transformed.
The work raises questions about the mutability of information and how the way we experience it informs its meaning as much as the actual content.

Julie Freeman, We Need Us, 2014 (ongoing)
Julie Freeman’s ongoing art work ‘We Need US ‘ is a live online, animated art work powered by people using the web.
Commissioned by the ODI and the Space the piece draws on metadata by capturing, collecting and exposing the real-time activity of the citizen science project Zooniverse users, as they click and swipe online around the globe.
Matching labour with labour, hand-crafted not generative
Explores what might be ‘living’ qualities of data and metadata. Julie wanted to explore the fundamental qualities of data, asking if data had lives of their own , what would they be?
In Summary
Thought experiment
The work is research-led, but it is unknown whether the artists' process will result in a definitive answer.
The piece explores data in terms of what is unpredictable and unknowable and its title reminds us of the humanity in technology, and that we need ‘us’ as much as we need it.
As everything becomes data-driven, key question is: not how do we visualise it, but what does it mean?
