Halloween originated from ancient Celtic harvest festivals, particularly the Gaelic festival of Samhain celebrating the end of summer. The Christian holiday of All Hallows' Eve incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain. Modern Halloween traditions include trick-or-treating, wearing costumes, carving jack-o-lanterns, lighting bonfires, and watching horror movies, many of which have their roots in Celtic harvest festivals and Christian religious observances.

 The word Halloween or Hallowe'en dates to about 1745 and is of Christian origin.
 The word "Hallowe'en" means "hallowed evening" or "holy evening". It comes from a
Scottish term for All Hallows' Eve (the evening before All Hallows' Day),

narrowing with the arrival of Samhain, allowing spirits (both benevolent and malevolent) to
pass through.

bonfires, apple bobbing, divination games,
playing pranks, visiting haunted attractions,
telling scary stories, and watching horror
films.

religious observances of All Hallows' Eve,
including attending church services and
lighting candles on the graves of the dead.

party did not begin to be massively celebrated until 1921. That year the first Halloween
parade was held in Minnesota and then other states followed.
 The internationalization of Halloween occurred in the late 1970s and early 1980s thanks to
film and television series.
