Open, Online and Distance Education:
Some Reflections During the Pandemic
Shironica P. Karunanayaka
Professor in Educational Technology, OUSL
Reflection
Reflection allows us to
learn from our
experiences:
It is an assessment of
where we have been
and where we want to
go next.

Open
Education
➢Open Access: Inclusive and equal access
to educational opportunities without
barriers such as entry qualifications and
ability to pay.
➢Open Learning: Ability to study and learn
at anytime, anywhere and at any pace.
➢Open Scholarship: Releasing educational
resources under an open license that
permits no-cost access, use, adaptation and
redistribution by others. (Naidu, 2016)

Distributed Learning
is an instructional model
that allows instructor,
students, and content to
be located in different,
non-centralized
locations so that
instruction and learning
can occur independent
of time and place.

Teaching as a
Design Science
• Teaching is no longer simply about passing on
knowledge to the next generation.
• Teaching is a design science.
• Like other design professionals, teachers have to work out creative and evidence-
based ways of improving what they do.
• Every day, teachers design and test new ways of teaching, using learning technology
to help their students.
• By representing and communicating their best ideas as structured pedagogical
patterns, teachers could develop this vital professional knowledge collectively.

Experiential
Learning
22 December 2020Shironica P. Karunanayaka, OUSL 20
➢Learners are engaged in solving
real-world problems.
➢Existing knowledge is activated
as a foundation for new
information.
➢New knowledge is demonstrated
to the learner.
➢The learner applies new
knowledge.
➢New knowledge is integrated
into the learner's world.

The Community of Inquiry theoretical
framework represents a process of
creating a deep and meaningful

experience through the development of
three interdependent elements – social,
cognitive and teaching presence.
