2. ● Read the
quotes and
sayings on
each
poster.
● Pick one
you agree
with
most.
● What does
it mean,
and why do
you agree
with it?
3. Reflection on Our Students
How do most
students respond to
‘hard’ activities?
Do students care
more about
or more about
on tests?
How important is
being right to most
students?
4. Reflection on Your Teaching
HOW OFTEN DO YOU TRY
NEW THINGS? HOW OFTEN
DO YOU KEEP DOING WHAT
YOU’VE ALWAYS DONE?
DO YOU BELIEVE EVERY
STUDENT CAN BE
AND BEHAVE WELL?
HOW OFTEN DO YOU MAKE
EXCUSES FOR STUDENTS
DOING WELL?
8. Where Did Mindset
Ideas Come From?
The ideas of growth and fixed
mindset were developed by
Carol S. Dweck Ph.D.
Her research is focused on
why people succeed and how
to foster success.
9. What is a Growth Mindset?
A growth mindset comes
from the belief that your
abilities and intelligence
are things that can develop
and grow with effort.
It aides in fostering
confidence and valuing the
process of learning and
trying OVER the outcome of
the efforts.
10. How does a Growth
Mindset help?
A person who has a growth
mindset thrives on challenge
and sees failure not as evidence
of unintelligence, but as a
springboard for growth.
A person with a growth
mindset always knows there’s
more to learn and try,
11. What is a Growth
Mindset?
People who have a growth mindset…
Embrace challenges
Persevere in tough times
See that it takes effort to get good at
something
Learn from criticism or
mistakes
Find inspiration in the success of others
12. The Language of a Growth Mindset?
If you have a growth mindset you might say
things like…
This may take some time and effort.
I’m going to figure this out.
Is this my best work?
Mistakes help me learn better.
I can always improve.
14. What is a Fixed Mindset?
A fixed mindset
comes from the belief
that your abilities are
unchanging, or you
cannot get better at
something.
15. How to Recognize a Fixed Mindset?
People who have a
fixed mindset…
Avoid challenges
Give up easily
See effort as useless
Ignore constructive
criticism
Feel threatened by the
success of others
Believes everything is
too easy and they don’t
need to try new or
harder things.
16. The Language of a Fixed Mindset.
If you have a fixed mindset, you might say things
like…
This is way too hard.
I will never understand this.
I’m not good at this.
I made a mistake. I can’t do this.
It will never work this way.
This isn’t how we do things here.
This is too easy. All the work is easy! I’m very
smart.
19. Identifying Mindsets
The student has a fixed
mindset as he gives up by
putting the pencil down and
saying “I don’t understand
it.”
The teacher, however, uses
a growth mindset explaining
that the brain is like a filing
cabinet full of maps that can
help him reach his
destination.
21. Identifying Mindsets
While some of the
comments Lebron makes
show a growth mindset (I’ll
do whatever it takes to
make our team win), his
final comment “I feel
confident because I’m the
best player in the world”
shows a fixed mindset as he
doesn’t see room for
improvement.
22. Teach the Power of
Yet..
Teaching students the power of
yet teaches them a life skill that will
enable them to face challenges and
to value the art of perseverance.
It enables them to see that their
efforts can pay off.
Students who understand the
power of yet develop a growth
mindset.
23. Growth Mindset Goal Setting
● On a piece of paper, make a list of 3 goals you have for next
semester as a teacher.
● Then, make a second list of 3 personal goals, or life
goals.
● On the back of this paper, write MY GOALS large in the center
of the page. Around the words MY GOALS, create a
word/doodle cloud by drawing images and adding words that
have to do with the goals you listed, both school and
personal, on the back of your paper.
● You could even use some of our growth mindset quotes!
● Tape or post this some place where you can see it EVERYDAY.
