 Enzymatic breakdown of a
carbohydrate
 By phosphate derivatives
 Produce pyruvate or lactic acid
 Energy stored in high-energy
phosphate bonds (ATP)

4. Functions
 Generate some ATP
 Breakdown glucose
 Provide starting point for complete
oxidation
 Takes place in aerobic and anaerobic
reaction.

 Glucose + hexokinase + ATP → ADP +
Glucose 6-phosphate
Step 2
 Glucose 6-phosphate +
Phosphoglucoisomerase → Fructose 6-
phosphate
Step 3
 Fructose 6-phosphate + phosphofructokinase
+ ATP → ADP + Fructose 1, 6-bisphosphate

6. Step 4
 Fructose 1, 6-bisphosphate + aldolase →
Dihydroxyacetone phosphate +
Glyceraldehyde phosphate.
Step 5
 Dihydroxyacetone phosphate →
Glyceraldehyde phosphate
Net result for steps 4 and 5: Fructose 1, 6-
bisphosphate ↔ 2 molecules of
Glyceraldehyde phosphate
