TYPES OF SUBJECT
Figurative Art or Representational art-
these type of art have subjects that refer
to objects or events occuring in the real
world. Portraits such as Mona Lisa are
good examples of what is called
representational art.
Non-representational art or non-figurative art.
Does not make a reference to the world, whether
it is a person, place, thing, or even a particular
event. It is stripped down to visual elements
such as shapes, lines, and colors that are
employed to translate a particular feeling,
emotion, and even concept.
NON REPRESENTATIONAL ART
OR NON FIGURATIVE ART
Non-representational art is not the same as abstract art, as it is
not a clear-cut divide. An example of this is Pablo Picasso's
sculpture, which is both representational and abstract.
Depending on the degree of distortion or abstraction, an
artwork may be judged as leaning more toward one over the
other.
Kandinsky compared non-representational art to music,
believing that it can evoke imagery and spiritual experiences.
NON REPRESENTATIONAL ART
AND ABSTRACT
In general, subject may be thought of as the “WHAT” in a piece of art:
the topic, focus, or image. In discussing the sources and kinds of
subject in artworks, it is important to note that these two are often
inextricably related. Often, even the singular source of inspiration can
yield multiple translations The subject of art is the matter to be
describe, It is the matter to be represented by the artist.
The subject in art is the essence of the piece. It maybe what depicted
in the work of art or what the artist trying to convey the world.
SOURCES AND KINDS OF
SUBJECT

In central india, the kind of art that was produced was
deeply rooted in Vedic texts such as
Upanishads,Puranas, and other important texts like the
Sanskrit epics Mahabharata and Ramayana.The
significance of these paintings rests on its ability to
foster devotion and the observance of a code of ethics
through the visualizations of heroic narratives.

Goya's El Tres de Mayo captures the death of Madrilenes
during the Peninsular War.
History is a source of artworks that illustrate important
figures, events, and ideologies.
The source and kind of subjects of art were determined
by the art patrons, style, and norms of the artist's milieu.
FRANCISCO DE GOYA
Art during the Spanish colonial period in the Philippines was
primarily representational, used to communicate religion and
assist Catholic ministry.
The rise of the middle class in the nineteenth century led to
an increase in demand for commissioned portraits, with
artists such as Simon Flores, Justiniano Ascuncion, and
Antonio Malantic becoming the foremost portraitists. The
subjects of artworks were dictated by the patrons who
commissioned them.

of a work of art. – Content refers to the
sensory, subjective, psychological, or
emotional properties we feel in a work of

communicated bythe artwork. In understanding the
content of art, it is important to note that there
arevarious levels of meaning:
1. Factual Meaning
2. Conventional Meaning

from the identifiable or
recognizable forms in the artwork
and understanding how these
elements relate to one another.
FACTUAL MEANING
● Pertains to the acknowledged interpretation of
the artwork using motifs, signs, and symbols
and other cyphers as bases of its meaning.

time, strengthened by recurrent use and wide
acceptance by its viewers or audience and
scholars who study them.
CONVENTIONAL MEANING
● A particular work of art that is
consulted and read. Meanings that
came from the viewers or audience’s
circumstances and experiences.
