3. RENAISSANCE – CAME FROM THE WORD
“RENAITRE” WHICH MEANS “ REBIRTH”-
•The most common subject of this
period is human philosophy. Famous
artists of this era were Michaelangelo,
Leonardo Da Vinci, REaphael and
Donatello

• Period of Economic progress
• Stirred enthusiasm for the study of ancient philosophy and artistic
values
• It was an era of great artistic and intellectual achievement with
the birth of secular art.
• The focus was on realistic and humanistic art
• Characterized by accurate anatomy, scientific perspective and
deeper landscape
5. RENAISSANCE PERIOD
• Realistic art - emphasized the humanity of religious
figures, above all Christ and his physical sufferings
in his Passion.
• Humanistic art - tends to present the human body in
a state of heightened realism. Muscles, curves, and
genitalia are emphasized as creations in God's image.
6. RENAISSANCE PERIOD
Michaelangelo di lodovico Buonarroti simoni( 1475-1564 )-
Italian sculptor, painter, architect and poet. Considered the
greatest living artists in his lifetime. Among his outstanding
works as sculptors were the following : Pieta, Bacchus, Moses
, David , dying slave, dawn and dusk : two of his best known
works the pieta and David, were sculpted before he turned
thirty.
13. RENAISSANCE PERIOD
• Leonardo Di Ser Piero Da Vinci (1452-1519)- He was a
painter, architect, scientist and mathematician. Known
as the ultimate Renaissance Man because of his
intellect, interest, talent and his expression of humanist
and classical values. One of the greatest painters of all
time.
19. RENAISSANCE PERIOD
• Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino (Raphael) (1483-1520)-
Italian painter and architect of high renaissance period.
His work was admired for its clarity of form and ease
composition and visual achievement of interpreting the
divine and incorporating Christian doctrines. Together
with michaelangelo and leonardo da vinci. His main
contributions to art were his unique draftsmanship and
compositional skills. His famous works are:

• Donato di Niccolo di Betto Bardi (Donatello) (
1386-1466)- Italian great artists of the period. He
was an early Italian sculptor from Florence. His
work in bas relief. A form of shallow relief
sculpture his works included the following

PORTUGUESE WORD BAROCCO WHICH MEANS “
IRREGULARLY SHAPED PEARL OR STONE”
• Baroque art reflects the tensions of the age notably the desire of catholic church to
turn both into protestant reformation to catholic reformation.
• Baroque was a period of artistic styles in exaggerated motion, drama , tension and
grandeur.
• Baroque art style learn to propagate Christianity and used aristocracy for
architecture and arts to impress visitors, express triumph, power and control
• More biblical art and symbolic art
29. BAROQUE PERIOD
• Baroque painting – catholic dogma either directly in biblical
works or indirectly in imaginary or symbolic work. The gestures
are broader than mannerist gestures: less ambiguous, less to give
faults, but mysterious.
• Baroque sculpture – larger than life size is marked by similar
sense of dynamic movement, along with an active use of space.
• Baroque architecture- was designed to create spectacle and
illusion. Thus, straight lines of the renaissance were replaced with
flowing curves

• Biblical art - was designed to highlight the theological
differences between Catholicism and Protestantism, by
focusing on the mysteries of the faith, as well as the
roles of the Virgin Mary and the Saints.
• Symbolic art – was designed to highlight indirectly in
imaginary, complex and broader than gestures that is
less ambiguous, simple and yet mysterious

• Peter Paul Rubens – (1577-1640) A Flemish baroque
painter. He was well known for his paintings of mythical
and figurative subjects, landscapes, portraits and
counter reformation altar pieces . His works were mostly
religious subjects, history paintings of magical creatures
and hunt scenes.
45. BAROQUE PERIOD
• Remembrandt Harmenszoon Van Rjin – Brilliant Dutch
realist, painter, and etcher. He is generally considered as
one of the greatest painters and printmakers in
European art. He was interested in spiritual values and
often chooses religious subjects. His concept of himself
continued to deepen grasp and subtlety, while his
technique grew more daring

• Diego Velasquez- He was from spain and one of
the finest masters of composition and one of the
most important painters of the Spanish golden
age. He was the case painter who discovered his
avocation almost at very start of his career. The
