relationship .
 The members of the group interact with one another and also with group as a
whole
 There is purpose behind the existence of any group
 Communication between group members will be according to formal or
informal set of rules

Characteristics of a Group
 Frequent interactions
 Interdependence among members and mutual influence
 Hierarchy , leadership and pattern of rules
 Common objectives ,beliefs and expectations regarding outcomes
 Cohesiveness and unity among members
Why Groups form???
It is due to
 Social Exchange Theory –
• People believe there is benefits in being part of particular group.
• Rewards from interactions and being part of group is more valuable compared
to cost and time spent .
Ex. Residential Groups.
Ex. You try to get into workshops for value of certificate than learning what
workshop is meant to be.
 Social Identity Theory –
• Members get self identity and positive self image by being in a group.
• Belonging to elite clubs is perceived as status enhancing.
Ex Membership in Clubs, Religious groups.
Stages of group formation
There are many stage theories but well-known one is that of Tuckman and
Jensen which propounds 5 stages of group formation and is based on internal
relations among group members.
Stages are :-
 Forming
 Storming
 Norming
 Performing
 Adjourning
Forming
 This is first stage characterized by initial entry of members and orientation.
 The members get to know each other and there will have some confusions as
they begin to share expectations about group.
 Members are not clear about their roles or norms.
 Discovering the purpose of group , discovering what is acceptable and what is
not and interaction characterize this stage .
Storming
 In this stage conflicts occur due to contradicting ideas ,disagreements over
roles , goals and procedures lead to dissatisfaction.
 The members try to form dyads , triads and subgroups by seeking out those
who share same views.
 Conflicts are unpleasant but help share perspectives and clarify expectations
in end .
Norming
 Members will come to terms with expectations of others and recognize
individual differences .
 Group members develop mutual trust ,more cohesion , and a sense of
identity.
 Group will become focused on mission to be accomplished .
Performing
 The group is mature and functional , it operates like well-oiled machine .
 Focuses on achieving goal through coordination.
 Internal disagreements is dealt with rational and creative ways .
Adjourning
 The group usually disband when members get sense of closure.
 Some groups have planned ending.
 Some may feel sad and others agree to work together in future.
