MEANING OF CONFLICT :-
Whenever two individuals opine in different ways, conflict
arises. In layman‟s language conflict is nothing but a fight
either b/w two individuals or among group members. IT is a
disagreement b/w two or more parties such as individuals ,
groups , departments, organizations or countries arising out
of difference in thought process , attitudes , understanding ,
interests ,goals, requirements & even sometimes perceptions.
TYPES OF CONFLICT :-
Conflicts manifests itself in different forms. Broadly conflicts
are classified into three different types :-
 Personal conflicts
 Group conflicts
 Organizational conflicts
DEFINING GROUP CONFLICT :-
Group conflict is pervasive feature common to all levels
of social organizations ( example political parties, team ,
ethnic groups, countries , gangs , etc.).It can be defined as a
disagreement or conflict either b/w members of the same
group or b/w two different groups. Group Conflict occurs
When a group, team or organizations start to fragment
into separatist fractions, either individually or with
Others thus forgetting common goals and fundamentals of
Communications .
CAUSES OF GROUP CONFLICTS :-
 Individual egos
 Incompatible goals
 Differences in values & Perceptions
 Communication distortions
 Specilization,etc
Types of Group Conflicts :-
 Intragroup conflicts
 Intergroup conflicts
Intragroup Conflicts :-
It is a form of interpersonal conflict. It includes
disagreements & misconceptions b/w group members on
certain issues ,thereby leading to ineffectiveness in group‟s
Functioning .
Intergroup Conflicts :-
Conflicts b/w two different teams or groups are termed as
intergroup conflicts . In this type of conflicts usually team
starts seeing each other as enemy and become hostile to
each other.
INTRAGROUP CONFLICT INTERGROUP CONFLICT
PARADOX OF INTRAGROUP CONFLICT :-
Traditionally scholars thought that Intragroup conflict as
a hindrance to effective group functioning. However it
Can actually stimulate creative problem solving and
enhance performance of the group. Thus Intragroup
conflict is inevitable & has potential to be dysfunctional
but if managed constructively it can be functional and
enhance the performance. This is know as paradox of
intragroup conflict.
BHARATIYA JANTA PARTY :-
 BJP is the successor party of Bharatiya
Jan a Sangh (BJS) that was founded by Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee
in 1951 which merged itself into the Janata Party in 1977.
 The BJP was then formed as a separate party in 1980 after internal
differences in the Janata Party resulted in the collapse of it's
government in 1979.
 The party is also regarded as the political arm of the Rashtriya
Swayamsevak Sangh & is known for its commitment towards
hindutva ideology
 BJP today is one of the largest opposition party having 117 members
out of 545 in Lok Sabha lead by Sushma Swaraj ( leader of opposition)
 The party currently have 49 members out of 245 in Rajya Sabha
lead by Mr. Arun Jaitley (leader of opposition )
 BJP is also a largest member of National Democratic Alliance
(NDA) . NDA is centre right coalition of political parties in India.
The coalition was in power from 1998to 2004. Currently there are
eleven parties in the NDA coalition which is in opposition in the
union parliament while holding power in many states.
No politician in independent India has been demonised in such a
relentless manner as Narendra Modi & no politician has withstood it
with as much resilience & courage as him, notwithstanding the entire
central government, influential sections of the media machinery &
civil society arraigned against him . Here is the look at the rise of
Narendra Modi and his political career.
September 17, 1950
Narendra Damodardas Modi is born in the ancient city of Vadnagar
in present-day Gujarat into a Hindu family. As a youth, he worked in
his family's tea stall, according to a biography
 1987
Modi joins the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as the fledgling party taps
into the growth of Hindu nationalism across India. The BJP wins a
majority in Gujarat in 1995 and Modi quickly rises up the ranks.
 2001
Modi gets his big break when Keshubhai Patel steps down as Gujarat
Chief minister in the wake of the January earthquake that killed
thousands of people. Modi is selected as Patel's replacement & has
remained in power ever since, becoming Gujarat's longest-serving chief
minister.
 February 27, 2002
Riots break out after 59 passengers, mostly Hindu pilgrims, die in a
train fire in the town of Godhra in Gujarat. At least 1,000 people, mainly
Muslims, are killed. Modi, as chief minister, is accused by critics of not
doing enough to stem the riots and even quietly encouraging the ---
allegations he has strongly denied and which have never been proved.
 2005
Washington denies Modi a travel visa for religious intolerance, causing
uproar in India.
 October 2008
Modi persuades Tata Motors to move its factory to build its low-cost
Nano car to Gujarat from West Bengal after protests from farmers over
land compensation, a sign of his business-friendly approach to politics.
 February 2012
A Special Investigation Team (SIT), which has been appointed by India's
Supreme Court, says investigators found no evidence against Modi in a
2002 riots case.
 October 22, 2012
British High Commissioner James Bevan sits down with Modi to discuss
business and investment in a landmark meeting that ends the UK's 10
Year diplomatic boycott after three British citizens were killed in the
2002 riots.
 December 20, 2012
Narendra Modi wins a third successive term as chief minister of
Gujarat, with the BJP getting 115 of the state assembly's 182 seats
against 61 for the Congress. The BJP also won four assembly seats in by
elections held in 2013.
 January 7,2013
European Union ambassadors have lunch with Modi at the German
ambassador's residence in New Delhi, ending a decade-old informal
Boycott of the political leader.
 June 9, 2013
Modi is chosen to head the BJP's campaign in general elections due in
2014, a position that could make him the party's candidate for prime
minister. A day later, rival leader Lal Krishna Advani resigns from
BJP posts, exposing deep rifts in the party. Advani backtracks later
that week.
 June 16, 2013
Nitish Kumar, head of the Janata Dal (United), pulls out of a 17
year-old alliance with the BJP after the party's decision to anoint
Modi as its standard-bearer for the general elections.
Promotion of Narendra Modi ,BJP „s controversial son as a head of
party‟s election campaign committee for 2014 polls made it amply clear
that Gujarat chief minister will probably lead party for 2014 general
elections. This appointment itself elicited sharp reactions both within
the BJP & outside BJP resulting in the eruption of noise of BJP‟S
Infighting . Modi bluster is not music to the ears of the BJP brass because
it complicates the party's urgency to project a cohesive leadership &
rope in more allies to expand the NDA & take on the Congress-led UPA
in the approaching elections.
For once, the BJP leadership was scenting power in Delhi given the multiple
crises& image meltdown of the UPA. Yet, Modi's unprecedented & aggressive
projection of himself as prime minister-inwaiting created a simmering
tension among BJP leaders, rifts with existing allies and roadblocks to roping
in new pre-poll partners. The irony is that Modi is also BJP's most visible,
popular and successful leader. In other words, Modi poses a problem &
opportunity for the BJP.
Narendra Modi as we discussed earlier is both problem as well as
opportunity for BJP as a leader. The divisional aspect of his persona
resulted in the winding off the bundles of conflicts and resistance
within BJP for various reasons. The prominent ones are discussed as
Under :-
ADVANI‟S REVOLT OVER MODI:-
The conflict b/w Narendra Modi „s Camp and L.K ADVANI „s camp is
deeply rooted and is one of the biggest cause of many conflicts taking
place in the party. The relationship b/w Modi & Advani started turning
sour specially after the Advani‟s trip to Pakistan in 2005 where he
appreciated Jinnah and as result of which he has to quit from party
president post under the pressure of RSS in late 2005.
Since then Modi started to distance himself from his mentor & created
space for himself in Party and became the poster boy for Hindutva
& efficient administrator. In the time that has followed the rivalry only
grown and became more complicated . The final nail in the coffin came on
June 9 ,2013 when the BJP decided to appoint Modi as the chairman of the
of the campaign committee of the BJP for the 2014 Lok Sabha election in
BJP‟S GOA annual meeting this was essentially a signal that Modi was the
tallest leader in the party & not Advani bringing the end of Advani era.
Clearly unhappy over Mr. Modi‟s elevation in the party hierarchy, Mr.
Advani summoned the party president, Rajnath Singh, & handed over a
resignation letter, from all the main bodies of the party Parliamentary
board, National Executive and Election Committee much to the shock &
disbelief of the rank and file. Later on the request of top leaders & due to
intervention of RSS & sang parivar truce was made and Mr.Advani took
his resignation back.
According to analysts, this whole conflict happened because of struggle
for power within party as Advani believes that in 2014 no party is going
to enjoy absolute majority and in a situation like that, the senior BJP
Leader wants to project himself as an alternative to the non Congress
and non Modi faction. Besides this conflict also took place because of the
insecurity in top members of party particularly Advani‟s camp with
respect to Modi‟s style of functioning and transition of leadership of party
in younger generation‟s hand. This has created rift In BJP members too..
MODI EFFECT :- Yeddyurappa syndrome
returns to haunt Karnataka BJP
With Modi‟s appointment as head of the party‟s campaign panel of Lok
Sabha elections 2014. also seems to have emboldened former leader B.S.
Yeddyurappa's supporters in the party to step up the campaign for his
return before the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
While only Bharatiya Janata Party legislator G. Madhusudan has
written a letter to party president Rajnath Singh to get Yeddyurappa
back, many of the former chief minister's supporters are said to be
lobbying away from public glare for his return.
Since Advani was a strong critic of Yeddyurappa as his over 3 year
rule in Karnataka which resulted in scandals ,corruption, illegal
land deals etc. The veteran leader was also highly critical of the way
the BJP central leaders had handled the Karnataka issue.
Yeddyurappa supporters apparently believe the Advani era in the BJP
is over and hence it is time their leader returned to the party.
Yeddyurappa is a great admirer of Modi and is said to be on good terms
with him. He had hinted at his willingness to return to the BJP soon
after Modi's nomination as campaign panel chief. His supporters in the
BJP are also encouraged to carry on their campaign as the state
party leadership has not categorically stated that Yeddyurappa
would not be taken back. This is because the state leadership is
not sure of the central leaders' stand on the issue.
The state leadership's stand has been that a decision on such issues is taken by
the BJP's central parliamentary board. Since Yeddyurappa party‟s
caused BJP a damage in 30 seats, a fact acknowledged by state BJP
itself. Though the issues on which the assembly and Lok Sabha elections are
Fought differ widely, for both the BJP and Yeddyurappa it is a question of
cutting losses.
Modi is still untested as a national vote gatherer and has not made
much of an impact in Karnataka in this year's and the 2008 assembly
elections. Modi will also find it difficult to resolve the Yeddyurappa
issue early as taking him back when he is fighting over a dozen cases
of corruption will only blunt the BJP's campaign against graft of the
Congress-led central government. These aspects and the fact that the
state BJP lacks a leader with an all-Karnataka appeal mean that the
party will have to live for a long time with the dilemma on whether to
take Yeddyurappa back or not.
REVOLT AGAINST MODI :-DELHI BJP
VICE PRESIDENT RESIGNS
ON JULY 17 ,2013 Amir Raza Hussain BJP Vice-President in Delhi and
famous theatre artist, resigned from his post on Tuesday, July 16. Husain
quit from his post following his remark against Narendra Modi over
“Puppy" controversy.
Hussain , during an interview with a TV news channel on Tuesday ,
openly revolted against Modi saying, “Modi is a BJP leader , not my
Leader”
Husain, who was elected as the Delhi BJP Vice President in May 2013.
Times of India quoted Husain as saying, "A lot of people like me who live
in a liberal as well as minority universe want an anti-Congress option
which an Atal Bihari Vajpayee or an L K Advani led BJP provides for.
By promoting Modi, BJP has closed that option for us.“
Husain's remark against Modi enraged party leaders as result he was
forced to resign after his statement against modi. Although he mentioned
that he had no intention to cause anguish against any leader.
Husain's statement on Modi surfaced following the controversy where
the Gujarat CM said, "Another thing... someone else is driving a car
& we're sitting behind, even then if a puppy comes under the wheel,
will be painful or not? Of course, it is." Modi, during an interview,
was taking questions on killings of people during 2002 Godhra riots.
Modi also invited criticism from many following his another remark
of "burqa of secularism". The Gujarat CM who reportedly had said
that "Congress hides behind the burqa (veil) of secularism.“ The
Gujarat CM remains largely a prisoner of his image a political figure
who is divisive and does not have the capacity to reconcile and reach
out to vast swathes of Indian society. This image follows his alleged role
in the 2002 communal riots in Gujarat. This image has created unrest
among the various leaders of BJP and is another main cause of group
conflict
 With Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi chorus growing within the
BJP, a significant segment of party leadership is now demanding that Modi
should be named as the parties Prime Ministerial candidate immediately.
But Modi who fought a divided camp during his appointment as the BJP's
poll panel chief could once again face backlash from the Lal Krishna Advani
camp. In fact BJP's Ananth Kumar has already voiced his support for
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan. "Let's take a pledge
that the BJP's victory rally will begin from Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. This
time the path to the red fort will not begin from any other state but from
Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh," Ananth Kumar said. Sources say senior RSS
leader Bhaiyyaji Joshi is taking the initiative on Modi. Joshi held talks with
LK Advani & other top leaders clearing the way for Modi & resolving this
conflict for good.
 Arun Shourie says Modi is BJP's PM candidate, calls his rivals 'stateless„
Leaders inspite of the fact that party president refrained everyone to speak
anything that might deepen the conflict
 BJP leader Shatrughan Sinha calls Team Narendra Modi „Lollypop‟. :-
Upset for being ignored for a key role in the upcoming 2014 General Election
BJP leader Shatrughan Sinha has called the election team of party‟s blue
eyed boy Narendra Modi „lollypop‟. One of the bitterest critics of the saffron
leader also said that LK Advani was the biggest leader of the party. &
“Everybody must seek his blessings," He also said that the Modi‟s popularity was
because of the party and media and that he had little hope from his team as
it lacked most of the experienced leaders of the party.
 RSS mounts pressure on BJP leaders to fall in line:-
Having made up its mind to back Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as
the BJP‟s prime ministerial candidate for the 2014 general election, the RSS
has stepped up its efforts to persuade senior BJP leaders to fall in line.
According to Sources, a determined RSS is not going to go back on its stand
for immediate announcement of Mr. Modi‟s candidature by the BJP, and the
current exercise is limited to mollifying the senior leaders.
In recent weeks, the pro-Modi camp in the BJP has been underscoring the
need for early announcement of the prime ministerial candidate. Leader of
the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley said the sooner the party
announced its candidate, the better it would be for it.
Mr. Jaitley argued that any row would amount to the party committing a
“hit-wicket” and turn out to be the only possible reason for it to lose the
general election.
 A Bihar BJP legislator Rana Gangeshwar Singh on Monday said he wanted
Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar to become the prime minister, instead of
Modi exposing the cracks in the party‟s state unit and prompting a BJP
leader to admit that his party was facing internal problems. BJP leaders
accused the Janata Dal-United of trying to lure JD-U legislators but said
they were confident of overcoming the challenge. A day after a Bihar BJP
legislator was suspended for anti Party activities.
 Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Rajnath Singh on Sunday forced
the party's Mumbai unit to cancel a rally to be held on March 17 to felicitate
Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi for registering hat trick of victory in
the Assembly election. Though the party has maintained that the rally has
been cancelled in wake of drought situation in the state sources say
infighting over control on the party is the real reason behind the decision.
according to the sources Singh did not appreciate centre stage to Modi at the
rally. Around 1.5 lakh workers were expected to attend the rally. “It was
clear that Modi's position in the party would had become stronger after the
rally. It would have created more complications to already existing
situations inside BJP.
The development has taken enthusiastic BJP workers aback. "We were fully
charged to hear Modi. It is a great disappointment now," said a worker from
BJP dominated Ghatkopar.
 The conflicts within BJP has created lot of confusion , sense of unrest ,
uncertainty & trust deficit, rift among the party members and as well as in
all the state units of the BJP thereby demoralizing the party workers & party
cadre who is waiting for its mobilization for2014 elections . This has weaken
the party on national level.
 SEPARATION OF ALLIES:- JDU SPLIT FROM NDA
The 17 year old alliance between JDU and BJP came to an end withNarendra
Modi being the centre talk b/w these two important parties. For JDU , they
cannot afford elevation of Modi and made their intention absolutely clear
about Prime Minister candidate. On the other side ,BJP was all set to fight the
upcoming Lok Sabha election projecting Modi as PM‟s candidate . The JD(U)
said it feared Mr. Modi‟s hardline Hindu image could deter Muslim voters in
national elections, which must take place by May next year.
 POLITICAL TURMOIL IN NDA (INDIA „S LEADING
OPPOSITION COALITION:-
The conflicts within BJP has created fractures in India's leading
opposition coalition as BJP being the largest party in it. Many parties
like Shiv Sena , Akali Dal has expressed their concerns on conflicts taking
place in BJP and elevation of Modi after the walkout of JDU from the
alliance .Besides Modi‟s appointment has shaken the BJP and threatened the
stability of the NDA. It has also sparked controversy over the involvement
of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS, a powerful Hindu volunteer
nationalist organisation) in internal BJP politics .
 For the beleaguered Congress, the open war in the BJP could not have
come at a better moment, allowing the congress to have breathing space as
now the focus of everyone has shifted from its poor governance issues,
scams , inflation etc to BJP‟s intra-politics who claims to be an alternative
For Congress government for 2014 General Elections. This has proved
beneficial for Congress who is trying to regain his lost reputation.
 The Open war in BJP had tarnished the Party‟s public image among
general public who are desperately looking for an option other than
congress for 2014 General Elections. This might Prove costly to BJP in
next elections and open‟s an opportunity for third front as well.
 Lastly according to political experts & various surveys the party
need to have more allies to strengthen NDA and to make sure that they
can be back in power but that is only possible if they set there house right
 Emergence of strong and decisive leader who if lead‟s BJP may turn
bring the party in power in 2014 Elections as he has got great mass
appeal and has already proved his capability as efficient administrator
This might bring an end to leadership crisis situation as well in BJP
 According to sources the level of conflicts within BJP has gone down
in last few months & party is started concentrating on Preparation for
2014 elections under leadership of Modi which is a good sign for BJP.
e.g. Narendra Modi‟s call for ideas &suggestions for Hyderabad public
meeting generates fantastic response.
AS We know the conflicts within BJP is not resolved fully & The real
truth is that the BJP is in disarray and trying to recover from it . The smell of
blood from the Congress’s wounds is so strong that it arouses them into attacking
each other. .Hence it is too early to decide that these conflicts would turn
BJP as an organization into functional unit or dysfunctional unit.
Although at this point we can say that the conflicts has done both good
as well as damage to BJP thereby establishing Intragroup conflict
paradox. Under these circumstances it looks like the conflicts within BJP
is hazardous idea whose actual intent and impact could be felt in the
coming months. But then, politics is a game of quirk twists and
turns and it would be interesting to see how the electoral politics of
India would unfold itself in coming days.
INTERNAL CONFLICT IN BJP INENSIFIES
 It seems the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is at war with itself. The
Principal opposition party‟s internal troubles resurfaced when senior
Party leader Ram Jethmalani embarrassed its party yet again by
saying that government's decision over appointment of new CBI chief
has "averted national calamity".
 If Jethmalani‟s salvo was not enough, BJP leader Shatrughan Sinha
joined those who have asked Nitin Gadkari to step down as party chief.
BJP, which calls itself a party with a difference, seems increasingly like
a banner divided by different camps, with every other leader‟s
Individual ambitions ruining the common core.
 The saffron party might be trying to tone down the “differences”,
But dissidence and internal bickering is out in the open and the
common man is beginning to become wary of the principal opposition
party.
 BJP has indicated that it may take disciplinary action against
Jethmalani who has demanded Gadkari's resignation and has disagreed
with the party's stand over the appointment of new CBI director

  • 7. BHARATIYA JANTA PARTY :-  BJP is the successor party of Bharatiya Jan a Sangh (BJS) that was founded by Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee in 1951 which merged itself into the Janata Party in 1977.  The BJP was then formed as a separate party in 1980 after internal differences in the Janata Party resulted in the collapse of it's government in 1979.  The party is also regarded as the political arm of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh & is known for its commitment towards hindutva ideology  BJP today is one of the largest opposition party having 117 members out of 545 in Lok Sabha lead by Sushma Swaraj ( leader of opposition)  The party currently have 49 members out of 245 in Rajya Sabha lead by Mr. Arun Jaitley (leader of opposition )  BJP is also a largest member of National Democratic Alliance (NDA) . NDA is centre right coalition of political parties in India. The coalition was in power from 1998to 2004. Currently there are eleven parties in the NDA coalition which is in opposition in the union parliament while holding power in many states.
  • 8. No politician in independent India has been demonised in such a relentless manner as Narendra Modi & no politician has withstood it with as much resilience & courage as him, notwithstanding the entire central government, influential sections of the media machinery & civil society arraigned against him . Here is the look at the rise of Narendra Modi and his political career. September 17, 1950 Narendra Damodardas Modi is born in the ancient city of Vadnagar in present-day Gujarat into a Hindu family. As a youth, he worked in his family's tea stall, according to a biography
  • 9.  1987 Modi joins the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as the fledgling party taps into the growth of Hindu nationalism across India. The BJP wins a majority in Gujarat in 1995 and Modi quickly rises up the ranks.  2001 Modi gets his big break when Keshubhai Patel steps down as Gujarat Chief minister in the wake of the January earthquake that killed thousands of people. Modi is selected as Patel's replacement & has remained in power ever since, becoming Gujarat's longest-serving chief minister.  February 27, 2002 Riots break out after 59 passengers, mostly Hindu pilgrims, die in a train fire in the town of Godhra in Gujarat. At least 1,000 people, mainly Muslims, are killed. Modi, as chief minister, is accused by critics of not doing enough to stem the riots and even quietly encouraging the --- allegations he has strongly denied and which have never been proved.  2005 Washington denies Modi a travel visa for religious intolerance, causing uproar in India.
  • 10.  October 2008 Modi persuades Tata Motors to move its factory to build its low-cost Nano car to Gujarat from West Bengal after protests from farmers over land compensation, a sign of his business-friendly approach to politics.  February 2012 A Special Investigation Team (SIT), which has been appointed by India's Supreme Court, says investigators found no evidence against Modi in a 2002 riots case.  October 22, 2012 British High Commissioner James Bevan sits down with Modi to discuss business and investment in a landmark meeting that ends the UK's 10 Year diplomatic boycott after three British citizens were killed in the 2002 riots.  December 20, 2012 Narendra Modi wins a third successive term as chief minister of Gujarat, with the BJP getting 115 of the state assembly's 182 seats against 61 for the Congress. The BJP also won four assembly seats in by elections held in 2013.
  • 11.  January 7,2013 European Union ambassadors have lunch with Modi at the German ambassador's residence in New Delhi, ending a decade-old informal Boycott of the political leader.  June 9, 2013 Modi is chosen to head the BJP's campaign in general elections due in 2014, a position that could make him the party's candidate for prime minister. A day later, rival leader Lal Krishna Advani resigns from BJP posts, exposing deep rifts in the party. Advani backtracks later that week.  June 16, 2013 Nitish Kumar, head of the Janata Dal (United), pulls out of a 17 year-old alliance with the BJP after the party's decision to anoint Modi as its standard-bearer for the general elections.
  • 12. Promotion of Narendra Modi ,BJP „s controversial son as a head of party‟s election campaign committee for 2014 polls made it amply clear that Gujarat chief minister will probably lead party for 2014 general elections. This appointment itself elicited sharp reactions both within the BJP & outside BJP resulting in the eruption of noise of BJP‟S Infighting . Modi bluster is not music to the ears of the BJP brass because it complicates the party's urgency to project a cohesive leadership & rope in more allies to expand the NDA & take on the Congress-led UPA in the approaching elections. For once, the BJP leadership was scenting power in Delhi given the multiple crises& image meltdown of the UPA. Yet, Modi's unprecedented & aggressive projection of himself as prime minister-inwaiting created a simmering tension among BJP leaders, rifts with existing allies and roadblocks to roping in new pre-poll partners. The irony is that Modi is also BJP's most visible, popular and successful leader. In other words, Modi poses a problem & opportunity for the BJP.
  • 13. Narendra Modi as we discussed earlier is both problem as well as opportunity for BJP as a leader. The divisional aspect of his persona resulted in the winding off the bundles of conflicts and resistance within BJP for various reasons. The prominent ones are discussed as Under :- ADVANI‟S REVOLT OVER MODI:- The conflict b/w Narendra Modi „s Camp and L.K ADVANI „s camp is deeply rooted and is one of the biggest cause of many conflicts taking place in the party. The relationship b/w Modi & Advani started turning sour specially after the Advani‟s trip to Pakistan in 2005 where he appreciated Jinnah and as result of which he has to quit from party president post under the pressure of RSS in late 2005. Since then Modi started to distance himself from his mentor & created space for himself in Party and became the poster boy for Hindutva
  • 14. & efficient administrator. In the time that has followed the rivalry only grown and became more complicated . The final nail in the coffin came on June 9 ,2013 when the BJP decided to appoint Modi as the chairman of the of the campaign committee of the BJP for the 2014 Lok Sabha election in BJP‟S GOA annual meeting this was essentially a signal that Modi was the tallest leader in the party & not Advani bringing the end of Advani era. Clearly unhappy over Mr. Modi‟s elevation in the party hierarchy, Mr. Advani summoned the party president, Rajnath Singh, & handed over a resignation letter, from all the main bodies of the party Parliamentary board, National Executive and Election Committee much to the shock & disbelief of the rank and file. Later on the request of top leaders & due to intervention of RSS & sang parivar truce was made and Mr.Advani took his resignation back. According to analysts, this whole conflict happened because of struggle for power within party as Advani believes that in 2014 no party is going to enjoy absolute majority and in a situation like that, the senior BJP Leader wants to project himself as an alternative to the non Congress and non Modi faction. Besides this conflict also took place because of the insecurity in top members of party particularly Advani‟s camp with respect to Modi‟s style of functioning and transition of leadership of party in younger generation‟s hand. This has created rift In BJP members too..

  • 16. MODI EFFECT :- Yeddyurappa syndrome returns to haunt Karnataka BJP With Modi‟s appointment as head of the party‟s campaign panel of Lok Sabha elections 2014. also seems to have emboldened former leader B.S. Yeddyurappa's supporters in the party to step up the campaign for his return before the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. While only Bharatiya Janata Party legislator G. Madhusudan has written a letter to party president Rajnath Singh to get Yeddyurappa back, many of the former chief minister's supporters are said to be lobbying away from public glare for his return. Since Advani was a strong critic of Yeddyurappa as his over 3 year rule in Karnataka which resulted in scandals ,corruption, illegal land deals etc. The veteran leader was also highly critical of the way the BJP central leaders had handled the Karnataka issue. Yeddyurappa supporters apparently believe the Advani era in the BJP is over and hence it is time their leader returned to the party. Yeddyurappa is a great admirer of Modi and is said to be on good terms with him. He had hinted at his willingness to return to the BJP soon after Modi's nomination as campaign panel chief. His supporters in the
  • 17. BJP are also encouraged to carry on their campaign as the state party leadership has not categorically stated that Yeddyurappa would not be taken back. This is because the state leadership is not sure of the central leaders' stand on the issue. The state leadership's stand has been that a decision on such issues is taken by the BJP's central parliamentary board. Since Yeddyurappa party‟s caused BJP a damage in 30 seats, a fact acknowledged by state BJP itself. Though the issues on which the assembly and Lok Sabha elections are Fought differ widely, for both the BJP and Yeddyurappa it is a question of cutting losses. Modi is still untested as a national vote gatherer and has not made much of an impact in Karnataka in this year's and the 2008 assembly elections. Modi will also find it difficult to resolve the Yeddyurappa issue early as taking him back when he is fighting over a dozen cases of corruption will only blunt the BJP's campaign against graft of the Congress-led central government. These aspects and the fact that the state BJP lacks a leader with an all-Karnataka appeal mean that the party will have to live for a long time with the dilemma on whether to take Yeddyurappa back or not.
  • 18. REVOLT AGAINST MODI :-DELHI BJP VICE PRESIDENT RESIGNS ON JULY 17 ,2013 Amir Raza Hussain BJP Vice-President in Delhi and famous theatre artist, resigned from his post on Tuesday, July 16. Husain quit from his post following his remark against Narendra Modi over “Puppy" controversy. Hussain , during an interview with a TV news channel on Tuesday , openly revolted against Modi saying, “Modi is a BJP leader , not my Leader” Husain, who was elected as the Delhi BJP Vice President in May 2013. Times of India quoted Husain as saying, "A lot of people like me who live in a liberal as well as minority universe want an anti-Congress option which an Atal Bihari Vajpayee or an L K Advani led BJP provides for. By promoting Modi, BJP has closed that option for us.“ Husain's remark against Modi enraged party leaders as result he was forced to resign after his statement against modi. Although he mentioned that he had no intention to cause anguish against any leader. Husain's statement on Modi surfaced following the controversy where
  • 19. the Gujarat CM said, "Another thing... someone else is driving a car & we're sitting behind, even then if a puppy comes under the wheel, will be painful or not? Of course, it is." Modi, during an interview, was taking questions on killings of people during 2002 Godhra riots. Modi also invited criticism from many following his another remark of "burqa of secularism". The Gujarat CM who reportedly had said that "Congress hides behind the burqa (veil) of secularism.“ The Gujarat CM remains largely a prisoner of his image a political figure who is divisive and does not have the capacity to reconcile and reach out to vast swathes of Indian society. This image follows his alleged role in the 2002 communal riots in Gujarat. This image has created unrest among the various leaders of BJP and is another main cause of group conflict
  • 20.  With Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi chorus growing within the BJP, a significant segment of party leadership is now demanding that Modi should be named as the parties Prime Ministerial candidate immediately. But Modi who fought a divided camp during his appointment as the BJP's poll panel chief could once again face backlash from the Lal Krishna Advani camp. In fact BJP's Ananth Kumar has already voiced his support for Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan. "Let's take a pledge that the BJP's victory rally will begin from Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. This time the path to the red fort will not begin from any other state but from Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh," Ananth Kumar said. Sources say senior RSS leader Bhaiyyaji Joshi is taking the initiative on Modi. Joshi held talks with LK Advani & other top leaders clearing the way for Modi & resolving this conflict for good.  Arun Shourie says Modi is BJP's PM candidate, calls his rivals 'stateless„ Leaders inspite of the fact that party president refrained everyone to speak anything that might deepen the conflict
  • 21.  BJP leader Shatrughan Sinha calls Team Narendra Modi „Lollypop‟. :- Upset for being ignored for a key role in the upcoming 2014 General Election BJP leader Shatrughan Sinha has called the election team of party‟s blue eyed boy Narendra Modi „lollypop‟. One of the bitterest critics of the saffron leader also said that LK Advani was the biggest leader of the party. & “Everybody must seek his blessings," He also said that the Modi‟s popularity was because of the party and media and that he had little hope from his team as it lacked most of the experienced leaders of the party.  RSS mounts pressure on BJP leaders to fall in line:- Having made up its mind to back Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as the BJP‟s prime ministerial candidate for the 2014 general election, the RSS has stepped up its efforts to persuade senior BJP leaders to fall in line. According to Sources, a determined RSS is not going to go back on its stand for immediate announcement of Mr. Modi‟s candidature by the BJP, and the current exercise is limited to mollifying the senior leaders. In recent weeks, the pro-Modi camp in the BJP has been underscoring the need for early announcement of the prime ministerial candidate. Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley said the sooner the party announced its candidate, the better it would be for it. Mr. Jaitley argued that any row would amount to the party committing a “hit-wicket” and turn out to be the only possible reason for it to lose the general election.
  • 22.  A Bihar BJP legislator Rana Gangeshwar Singh on Monday said he wanted Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar to become the prime minister, instead of Modi exposing the cracks in the party‟s state unit and prompting a BJP leader to admit that his party was facing internal problems. BJP leaders accused the Janata Dal-United of trying to lure JD-U legislators but said they were confident of overcoming the challenge. A day after a Bihar BJP legislator was suspended for anti Party activities.  Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Rajnath Singh on Sunday forced the party's Mumbai unit to cancel a rally to be held on March 17 to felicitate Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi for registering hat trick of victory in the Assembly election. Though the party has maintained that the rally has been cancelled in wake of drought situation in the state sources say infighting over control on the party is the real reason behind the decision. according to the sources Singh did not appreciate centre stage to Modi at the rally. Around 1.5 lakh workers were expected to attend the rally. “It was clear that Modi's position in the party would had become stronger after the rally. It would have created more complications to already existing situations inside BJP. The development has taken enthusiastic BJP workers aback. "We were fully charged to hear Modi. It is a great disappointment now," said a worker from BJP dominated Ghatkopar.
  • 23.  The conflicts within BJP has created lot of confusion , sense of unrest , uncertainty & trust deficit, rift among the party members and as well as in all the state units of the BJP thereby demoralizing the party workers & party cadre who is waiting for its mobilization for2014 elections . This has weaken the party on national level.  SEPARATION OF ALLIES:- JDU SPLIT FROM NDA The 17 year old alliance between JDU and BJP came to an end withNarendra Modi being the centre talk b/w these two important parties. For JDU , they cannot afford elevation of Modi and made their intention absolutely clear about Prime Minister candidate. On the other side ,BJP was all set to fight the upcoming Lok Sabha election projecting Modi as PM‟s candidate . The JD(U) said it feared Mr. Modi‟s hardline Hindu image could deter Muslim voters in national elections, which must take place by May next year.  POLITICAL TURMOIL IN NDA (INDIA „S LEADING OPPOSITION COALITION:- The conflicts within BJP has created fractures in India's leading opposition coalition as BJP being the largest party in it. Many parties
  • 24. like Shiv Sena , Akali Dal has expressed their concerns on conflicts taking place in BJP and elevation of Modi after the walkout of JDU from the alliance .Besides Modi‟s appointment has shaken the BJP and threatened the stability of the NDA. It has also sparked controversy over the involvement of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS, a powerful Hindu volunteer nationalist organisation) in internal BJP politics .  For the beleaguered Congress, the open war in the BJP could not have come at a better moment, allowing the congress to have breathing space as now the focus of everyone has shifted from its poor governance issues, scams , inflation etc to BJP‟s intra-politics who claims to be an alternative For Congress government for 2014 General Elections. This has proved beneficial for Congress who is trying to regain his lost reputation.  The Open war in BJP had tarnished the Party‟s public image among general public who are desperately looking for an option other than congress for 2014 General Elections. This might Prove costly to BJP in next elections and open‟s an opportunity for third front as well.  Lastly according to political experts & various surveys the party need to have more allies to strengthen NDA and to make sure that they can be back in power but that is only possible if they set there house right
  • 25.  Emergence of strong and decisive leader who if lead‟s BJP may turn bring the party in power in 2014 Elections as he has got great mass appeal and has already proved his capability as efficient administrator This might bring an end to leadership crisis situation as well in BJP  According to sources the level of conflicts within BJP has gone down in last few months & party is started concentrating on Preparation for 2014 elections under leadership of Modi which is a good sign for BJP. e.g. Narendra Modi‟s call for ideas &suggestions for Hyderabad public meeting generates fantastic response.
  • 26. AS We know the conflicts within BJP is not resolved fully & The real truth is that the BJP is in disarray and trying to recover from it . The smell of blood from the Congress’s wounds is so strong that it arouses them into attacking each other. .Hence it is too early to decide that these conflicts would turn BJP as an organization into functional unit or dysfunctional unit. Although at this point we can say that the conflicts has done both good as well as damage to BJP thereby establishing Intragroup conflict paradox. Under these circumstances it looks like the conflicts within BJP is hazardous idea whose actual intent and impact could be felt in the coming months. But then, politics is a game of quirk twists and turns and it would be interesting to see how the electoral politics of India would unfold itself in coming days.
  • 27. INTERNAL CONFLICT IN BJP INENSIFIES  It seems the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is at war with itself. The Principal opposition party‟s internal troubles resurfaced when senior Party leader Ram Jethmalani embarrassed its party yet again by saying that government's decision over appointment of new CBI chief has "averted national calamity".  If Jethmalani‟s salvo was not enough, BJP leader Shatrughan Sinha joined those who have asked Nitin Gadkari to step down as party chief. BJP, which calls itself a party with a difference, seems increasingly like a banner divided by different camps, with every other leader‟s Individual ambitions ruining the common core.  The saffron party might be trying to tone down the “differences”, But dissidence and internal bickering is out in the open and the common man is beginning to become wary of the principal opposition party.  BJP has indicated that it may take disciplinary action against Jethmalani who has demanded Gadkari's resignation and has disagreed with the party's stand over the appointment of new CBI director
