Groundhog Day

Analysis of Learners &
Objective
This Unit Plan is for a class of first graders. There are 24
students in the class; 11 boys and 13 girls. Three students
have a mild case of ADD (attention deficit disorder).
The students will be engaged in some type of classroom,
group or individual work at all times during the Groundhogs
day lesson. They will be doing so by class discussions, online
research with a worksheet, devolvement of a picture book
and show and tell. All the students will understand
Groundhogs day and the significance of season change and
will have a story to share of their own animals day by the end
of the week.
Day 1/2
 Day one:
 The first day will start the week prior to Groundhog Day.The class will be
given a brief overview of what the seasons are.Then the class will be
introduced to what Groundhog Day is and the history of the day by the
teacher using an interactive power point presentation with a simple
outline of what the Groundhog day involves. It will also include a timeline
made by the teacher that shows the outcome of Groundhog day from
previous years. The class will also take predictions about what they
think the outcome of this years Groundhog Day will be and then I (the
teacher) will make a poll on the smart board to save so the class can
later see if the the majority predicted right.
 Day two:
 The second day the class will go to the computer lab. The activity will be
introduced using a Voki. The students will be divided into four different
groups, one for each season. The students will be asked to research
Groundhog Day and their appointed season.Then complete a short fact
sheet that will help them in the following days activities.
Day 3
On the third day the groups will come together and put
together a story book that will teacher the rest of the
class about their season. The teacher will show a video
she created on how to make a story book. The
storybooks will be a short story about a day in the life of
an animal of the groups choice. After writing their first
draft the stories will be read by the teacher for editing.
The children will then be allowed about 30 minutes to
turn their stories into a picture books. The picture books
will be colored and then bonded together with the
teachers assistance.
Day 4/5
Day 4:
 The fourth day of the lesson will consist of the students sharing
their picture books with the class. And a more in depth class
discussion of the seasons.
Day 5:
 On the last day of this lesson play, the teacher will replay the
video of the Groundhog Day from over the weekend on the
projector. This will then be followed by a discussion of the longer
or shorter winter which we are suppose to have that year. If a
longer winter then it would lead into a calendar counting down the
days till the official start of spring.
