It contains stacks PM-Z, an oversized collection, the Connecticut Collection, theses/dissertations, group study rooms, reading areas, and offices. The third floor of the library contains stacks PN-Z, the juvenile collection, oversized collection, Connecticut collection, group study rooms, reading areas, Teaching and Learning Center, FYE & FSSP offices, and the Academic Success Center. Key parts of the third floor include the stacks from PN2926-Z, juvenile fiction and non-fiction books, the curriculum collection, oversized books, the Connecticut collection, three study rooms, two reading rooms, and the Academic Success Center which will provide academic assistance. The Library Director's office and Administrative Assistant's office are also located on the third floor.
Second floor
The second floor of the library has book stacks from A-PN, group study rooms, reading rooms, a library instruction classroom, and the future Faculty Development Center. It contains circulating books that can be checked out as well as quiet study spaces. Restrooms and a water fountain are located midway along the stacks.

Ground floor
- 1. Ground Floor The easiest way to get to the ground floor is to take the staircase in the connector. Or you may take the elevator in the first floor Reference area. Stairs leading to the ground floor The Ground Floor has bound periodicals, current journals, magazines, and newspapers, Microforms, Art Gallery, Special Collections, Media Room, a reading area, and Technical Services. - 2. Bound Periodicals The ground floor of Buley Library houses our periodical collection. The bound periodicals are arranged in alphabetical order by periodical title beginning at the Student Center side.
- 3. Periodicals Information Desk Current periodicals are arranged in alphabetical order by title in white plastic boxes in the center of the Periodicals reading area. The Periodicals Information Desk is in the center of the Periodicals Reading area. There is a book scanner on the desk so users can scan articles from print journals and other sources and save them to a thumb drive. Very soon they will be able to print, email, or save to their university accounts as well. Current Periodicals Scanner
- 4. Current Periodicals and Newspaper Rack Newspapers are shelved along with the current periodicals and the five dailies that we get are on the newspaper rack. They are the Connecticut Post, The Hartford Courant, The New Haven Register, the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal.
- 5. Abstracts and Indexes Periodical abstracts and indexes are shelved right after the bound periodicals in alphabetical order. Abstracts and indexes provide citations to articles in journals, magazines, and newspapers. These are especially useful for locating older articles.
- 6. SCSU Theses The SCSU Theses collection is shelved after the abstracts and indexes. These are arranged by year and a four digit number. You will need to know the number in order to find the thesis on the shelf. Theses can be checked out.
- 7. Technical Services The room behind the glass enclosure is Technical Services where all library materials are received and processed. The door to Technical Services is located in the hallway. Offices of the Technical Services staff are located within. Door to Technical Services Abstracts & Indexes Theses Technical Services
- 8. The Art Gallery on the Ground Floor is a wonderful space for exhibits and programs. It is situated right across from the stairs.
- 9. Special Collections and Reading Area Across from the Art Gallery is Special Collections. There is a reading area, a work area, and compact shelving for books, documents, and artifacts. The collection includes rare books, university archival material, and books authored by Southern faculty and students.
- 10. If you are looking for something fun to do, you can work on the puzzle table right opposite the Art Gallery.
- 11. Listening and viewing stations are available in the Media Room next to the Art Gallery. DVDs, videos, music CDs, remotes, and headphones are checked out at the Circulation Desk prior to viewing or listening.
- 12. Beyond the media room at the far back is the Microforms room which has our collection of microfiche and microfilm.
- 13. Microfiche/Microfilm Scanner & Printer Film/Fiche Cabinets Inside the Microforms Room are file cabinets containing microfilm and microfiche. If you need help with locating or using film or fiche, you can get help at the Periodicals Information Desk. A Microfilm/fiche scanner and printer is available so users can scan documents to print, email, or save to a thumb drive.
